I'm joining in. I spend almost compulsively. I'm starting to fear that it is a disorder. NAK! I'm going to start coming here to report progress and will also record things in a notebook. I almost get edgy if I don't make it out to "gather" (either going grocery shopping or hitting the sales bins). I'm ashamed to admit this, but today I ran up a big bill just at Target, and started seeking support online finally. I am so happy that MDC has a group. I love MDC and have been on and off as a member for years. I guess my first no-spend day will have to be tomorrow Nice to meet you all.

Welcome leurMaman! This is a supportive group... There are also other groups, like shoppers anonymous, but I don't know what they're called. Good for you for seeking support!

Today was a pretty good day, spending-wise. I did spend almost $200 but a lot of it was necessary or at least planned. I spent over $11 at the post office, but it was to mail out things I'm selling, so I consider that to be a non-expense, really. Then I spent almost $46 at the hardware store. We needed a rake, since ours broke and we keep borrowing the neighbors'. I was hoping we could wait until next year, but there are still leaves on the trees, and it's kind of ridiculous that we don't just have rakes of our own. I also got a dowel so I can fix our bird feeder and finally put it up, some insulating foam to seal a leak in a basement window and one more retractable clothesline to use in the basement in the winter (I've been line-drying our clothes and it's going great!).

At the grocery store I bought a lot of necessities, but also some things like a candy bar. And a cookie. And a cookie mix. And chips for DH. And some Silk nog. And a way-too-expensive Amy's pizza for lunch. I always used to do this, but I never added it all up until now. It was almost $30 for what are essentially treats! I need to do better than that. At least it will get eaten, so it's better than a splurge on, say, a knicknack we don't need, but still.

Tomorrow a friend is coming over with her baby and we're walking up to Starbucks, so I'll be spending (but hopefully not driving). This is planned, though, and I do have some of my own spending money to use.

10/1: $12.60 flowers for my mom's birthday
10/2: $23.23 gas for the car + $62.17 actual groceries at the farm ($25 raw milk, $8.38 ham slices & $28.79 raw cheese) + $10.58 treats at the farm ($2.73 chocolate bar, $3.90 granola bars & $3.95 egg nog)
10/3: $14.50 entrance to the zoo + $2.65 for candy
10/4:
10/5:
10/6: $36.67
10/7: $8.86 groceries
10/8: $5 Drano for our plugged kitchen sink
10/9:
10/10:
10/11:
10/12:
10/13: $11.37 post office to mail things I'm selling + $45.88 hardware store for rakes, a dowel, a retractable laundry line and insulating foam + $129.95 necessary groceries + $29.02 non-necessary groceries

KEY:
True no spend
Spending within budget
Spending outside budget

KEY:

=out of budget spending

Not too much to report today. We met some out-of-town friends at the aquarium, which was fun, I just can't believe it costs so freakin' much to get in! They recently jacked up the price, likely due to their new addition. DD and I were hungry afterwards but instead of going out we went home for lunch. It involved extra driving since we had to go right back out to pick up my other DD from school, but it was worth it. No more spending for the rest of the day, though!

I have a $5 survey to do tonight, and materials to watch for another survey for $15. We're almost out of FS for the month though, but we can make it. Eat at home Days 5/20
Stick to the List Days {We grocery Game} 5/20
Try to only spend the Food Stamps 352/357

This was my first time. I loved that cash4books gave me a shipping label so I didn't have to lay out any cash. I had to pay for secondspin - I think it cost about $11, they gave me back about $5 and I made $122, so I figure the $6 is a small price to pay to have this out of my house and some extra cash. Cash4books gives a bonus if you use paypal too, so that was cool. I'm waiting for the check to clear on cash4books and secondspin says they'll deposit into my paypal within 7 business days. I mailed out the packages on 10/28, so, like I said, it took a while. The stuff I mailed them on 11/6 isn't there yet. I took a risk and kept sending stuff even after I didn't hear back, so far it's worked out ok. I have another pile to send to secondspin, so hopefully I'll do that by the weekend.

The hard thing about the books is they are a little selective. I've also sold some to bluerectangle.com and ecampus.com, neither have been processed yet (same timing as the last batch of cash4books). What one won't take, the other might, and stuff I looked up one week wasn't paying and the next it was. So I keep a list of ISBNs and once a week when I have some free time I try them all again, just in case.

If you try it, good luck! So far so good for me.

Nov. 13 -

$36/50 discretionary spending
$263/350 groceries
$30/$100 Gas
$96 over budget

No spend today but if DD were not passed out already I would be out buying beer! I am sick of organizing people!!! My friend and I are trying to take on our department at work and we usually organize the other departments when they come into contact with us on project. My DH is having stress-related health problems and will pitch in with chores or parenting, but will not make any decisions. I also will not see him until Saturday since our schedules do not line up at all, and I'm going to have to deal with DD's issues adjusting to the day home.

Groceries and gasoline, in budget. I've allotted 75 bucks a week for groceries, but have been trying to keep it at 50 dollars (to help pay off that fuel pump) and it is really working so far. Amazing what sticking to your list and menu planning can do! Also, spent a lot less on gas today thanks to the 2 no drive days on the weekend- I am shocked at what a difference that made. Did buy two christmas presents for my dds and sent a package to my niece. All in budget. I still need to finish the Christmas gift and card list and finalize that budget.

***********************************************
Nov 1 : $499!!! fuel pump for car, $5 kiddie gym Made $$
Nov 2 fast food (my cash) Made $$
Nov 3 in budget spending for DD's birthday party
Nov 4 toys to exchange for DDs halloween candy Made $$
Nov 5 costco, in budget, 2.50 on pizza (my cash), 8.50 candy for gma
Nov 6 groceries, under budget!, gasoline, csa
Nov 7
Nov 8
Nov 9 kids yoga class, out to dinner 28 in budget
Nov 10 + no drive
Nov 11 + no drive
Nov 12 snacks (my cash)
Nov 13 groceries, gasoline, christmas gifts, post office

KEY: no spend in budget unbudgeted, unplanned, or unwise

***********************************************
The Plan:
Make a weekly meal plan and stick to the grocery list 2/4
Groceries once a week only ($75 or less, not incl weekly CSA) 2/4
Fill gas once a week only on grocery day 2/4
Non-essential spending for me 22.70/$50

Record each purchase to track spending
Pack snacks and water every time we get in the car
Make list of Christmas 'giftees' and create holiday budget.

DD1 Birthday 117/$120 done
Give DH cash for the month for gasoline and fun money done
Only ONE stock-up trip to Costco 1/1 done

What kind of mystery shopping do you do, and where do you do your surveys? You may have answered it before, I know someone did...
I do my surveys thru pinecone research & online focus groups {random ones}. I do mystery shopping for shop n chek, GFK enterprises, and beyond Hello.

I love mystery shopping - I get to do the coolest stuff sometimes as shops!

Spent today, but it was pretty much essential and within budget. Did wander into the lion's den, aka Target, but came out unscathed with nothing fun - just toothbrushes, GB powder, tape, q-tips, and laundry detergent. Dare I say the thrill is gone?

Not budgeted, but essential to us, was a replacement digital camera at another store - saved $80 and paid just $99 for the model we were looking for. Parents offered to purchase for Christmas, so will give us more than we paid in cash if desired, so not all that spendy of me after all.

Redeemed a really old online store g/c and spent an additional $47; all essential personal care/household items we would have paid more for locally, and shipping was free.

Also unearthed some old unused bonus points on a credit card; redeemed to "purchase" a sweater/hat set and 9 pair of socks for DS; all free including shipping.

Have been thinking a lot the last few days about purchasing quality items over less expensive options. My 97-year-old grandmother and her spring chicken of a sister (at 89?) are pros in this arena. Grandmother pulls out a gorgeous wool blanket when we stay over that she got when first married; Great Aunt serves phenomenal meals on a beautiful set of dishes that is 50+ years old. The material choices these ladies made were smart both financially and environmentally. They did not always have the money ready and waiting to acquire quality, but saved until they could afford to purchase something beautiful that would last for decades (my Great Aunt bought a couple of dishes at a time while her husband was in medical school and they were broke after spending all wedding $ on medical bills for a c-section (60 years ago)). I have a lot to learn, and perhaps with this in mind, found Target downright distasteful today...

Kim

GOALS:
* Less than $100 in frivolous spending: month to date $2.50
* At least 25 days (no spend or spending w/in budget): 12/30
* Avoid Target: 12/30
* Pack snacks/water for outings: 13/30
* NO library fines: month to date $0
* Stay within grocery budget: $418.07/$430
* Stay within eating out budget: $51.50/$80

Thanks mrskennedy - it was very exciting to see his art hung in a museum - he was very proud and encouraged! Certainly, required us buying mexican food out afterwards

Grace, I'm sorry about the unplanned pet pg but glad you didn't quit!

Frog: yeah, the housing markets are so different that our equity in Seattle completely covers the cost of the Greenville house. Which makes a reduced income far more feasible.

Update:

November 11th: : $161 (book I will return, outfit, eye cream dp and I both use)

November 12th: my 30th birthday! $100 retainer to lawyer to form our new company (I'm the President, whee!), $2.12 for DVDs to copy wedding photos, $2 parking, $29 bar tab, Spenser novel is finished and ready to be returned to Costco!

November 13th: : no-drive, no-spend. See that $29 bar tab above, for my birthday? Well it cost us more than $29. I puked all day. Such a freaking lightweight. When do two people spend $29 at a bar, including tip, not ordering cheap stuff, and one of them gets ill? When she's a freaking lightweight, that's when. On the plus side, MIL returned my Spenser novel (the newest one, Now and Then) to Costco and put the $$ back on my card.

Of course, MIL came back from Costco raving about all the velvet Coldwater Creek stuff they've put out since I was there last. :

Cash for books, huh? I'll have to check that out - taking books to Half Price Books is pretty much like throwing them in the dumpster.

GOALS:

Kid's Xmas gifts: 29/150
Xmas gifts for others: 0/100
Groceries: 0/100

Nov 1: $30 for DH and I to eat out
Nov 2:
Nov 3:
Nov 4:
Nov 5: : $107 for dd's new bed, $80 for our new chiffarobe. Both necessary.
Nov 6: $8 for food (budgeted). $325 made from sell of piano.
Nov 7: Made $100 from sale of massage table. Spent $30 and rest is for DH and I to split and spend while out of town tomorrow. But he already spent his and we haven't left yet!
Nov 8: : We went out of town for DH's Garth Brooks concert. $20 for a baby shower gift. $100 on a cc for a double stroller (only 2 stores within 250 miles carried it and one happened to be where we were). $36 for food. $50 for a hotel room because I couldn't handle a car ride home I was in so much pain. $10 on random things throughout the day.
Nov 9: I spent $28 on a bedrail for dd's bed and epsom salts, but we needed both. Made $40 from sale of a baby entertainer!
Nov 10:
Nov 11: Groceries were budgeted, as well as $94 for Christmas gifts for my IL's, my dad, my grandma/grandpa, and myself (all the same thing- and they were on sale!)
Nov 12:
Nov 13:

DH's paychecks this month (weekly, third one coming on Thursday) have *all* been lower than our budget estimates. And we estimated low! The last two weeks are because DH had been sick, and this week it's because his store bonus was dismal (people have to spend so much on gas, I guess they don't have as much to spend in the store itself). Thankfully we've kind of buffered ourselves by paying stuff off with the sale of the piano last week, but this month has not been nice to our new budget, that's for sure! Still, we're managing to pay the bills and still have money for food and gas, so that's the good thing!

Oh...and I have had so many no-drive days because both sets of keys to our car are missing! We need to find them tomorrow because the van is pretty much out of gas and the car is nearly full!
