Thanks! I'm feeling much better today (which is good since I have to work tomorrow!) but yesterday was rough. And I'm still only eating super soft foods so I'm really glad I got everything I went over budget on yesterday.

January:
01/01 :
01/02
$14.04 at the Co-op. Payed rent.
01/03 :
01/04 :

01/05 with a little and Sandwich at work ($5 - 30% ); Dog's flea stuff $16.08 (); Walgreens $4.57 ( and ); Staples $3.85 (1/2 1/2 ).
01/06 :
01/07 :
01/08 :
Yay! Three in a row!
01/09 Budgeted "social spending" $8.50 on Bingo with my friends, $5 burrito, $1.50 ice cream.
01/10 $20 fingerprinting fee (for CASA), $40 at the Co-op
01/11 Lasagna at work ($5.50 - 30%).
01/12 :
01/13 :
Made $20 decorating a cake for a friend!
01/14 I had to get a part for my car, but it was only $2.46. (and a bagel at work $2.25 )
01/15 :
01/16 and
I got gas $10, a few groceries $9, and a burrito w/ bottled water $5.25 . ETA: Rented 2 movies and payed old late fine $11 I forgot to ask for a receipt at the gas station and movie rental place. ETA again: $1.95 at work eating
01/17 :
01/18 $6.45 food at work, $5.71 postage, $36.64 groceries. ETA: Also spent $4.07 on junk foot at a gas station with a friend. And I forgot to get a receipt.
01/19 :I went to Target and Borders w/ a friend and didn't buy anything!
01/20 I went way over budget at a bar with my friends $16. Also, $1.50 at work food and $55 automatic online bill pay (). Oh, and I had too much work to to, and couldn't make it to yoga today. :
01/21 $10.20 for coffees & a bagel, $5 more for chocolates.
01/22 :
01/23
$4.50 at work food, $44 groceries/household
01/24 :
01/25 I spent $18.32 on beads for two-3 gifts. I had budgeted $15 for gifts, so technically I'm only $3.32 over budget, but still! :
01/26 :
01/27
$10 gas. Forgot to ask for a receipt again! : AND I didn't go to yoga, so I totally blew my yoga goal for this month! :
01/28 : Made $10 on a cake for a friend!
01/29 :
01/30
$35 at the co-op
01/31 : Ending the month in a good way!

January Recap:
Goals:
  • 28/31 Save ALL receipts. I need to remember to ASK for a receipt when getting gas or any other time one isn't automatically given or offered.
  • 29/25 Stay out of all stores other than the Co-op, and Winco (dollar store "emergencies" only. $5 per trip limit, 2 trips per month MAX) (I only count this if I buy something at an off limit store ) I made ZERO trips to the dollar store this month, and didn't buy anything most of the times I went to a non-approved store!
  • 17/20 true no-spend days : I'm really surprised at how close I was able to get to this goal at the last minute, but I had expected this one to be easy to meet when I first started.
  • $46.20/$25 social spending I went totally over budget on this, but I'm not stressing about it because I was still under what my "normal income" budget would be.
  • 0/2 Yoga sessions this month I totally blew it on this one, but in my defense, several of the days I would have gone if I hadn't been so busy at work. Next month I'm really going to go!!!
  • $27.40/$30 worth at-work eating (I get 30% off and it comes out of my paycheck) Woo!!! I actually achieved one of my goals!
  • Save anything possible this month. Concrete saving goals start in Feb.
  • Approx. ~$60/$0 out of budget spending Went way overboard on this one... FIDO I guess!

All in all, this was a good "learning experience" month for me since I only met ONE of my goals (the easiest one of course).
My budget is going to be quite a but more relaxed next month, but I'm upping a few goals and have some major saving goals so I'm sure it will be a big challenge! See you in February!

Key:

All in all, I did pretty well. I resisted spending money a lot of times, so I know I saved by participating. I checked my credit cards online today, and it was probably 75% DH's spending, and most of it necessary.

Next month, I'm allowing myself some fast food and a couple trips to the thrift stores. I feel like I should lower my postage budget, but I really like doing the swaps. That's my entertainment budget! I'm thinking about starting a "jar fund" for our roof or for extra mortgage money. I like the idea of seeing the money and being able to add a little to it at a time.

DD's birthday is next month, so we'll have to be frugal while planning the party.

I was especially proud of the times when we had free fun, like the trip to the zoo on the only nice day of the year.

Tracking:
50/50 - postage for bookswaps
1/31 - days gone recreational shopping
3/0 - fast food meals
2/5 - Complete 5 craft projects (MIL scarf, bag holder)
$46 - Off budget spending (Hobby Lobby, 1/2; Pizza, 1/15; Fast food dinner, 1/16; dinner/movie - 1/20; thrift store; fast food)

Key: (borrowed from Ani)
= not a penny spent

= necessary spending not in the budget (things I forgot/didn't plan for)
= unnecessary spending

So, I came in under budget on everything (even fuel oil!) except groceries and gift-making supplies. In Feb I swear not to go over my grocery budget, and I also have to figure out a plan re. when/how to stock up, what to stock up on, and how to budget for it. I also have to reign in my gift-making/yarn/etc spending, but that'll be almost impossible, since there are bdays and Easter coming up and I have little yarn for projects... But I'm hoping that either someone will feel generous and give or buy me some yarn, or that I'll find a huge sale! Gees, maybe I should check eBay?! Everything else went pretty well this month.

Do you see any patterns?

Yes, I overspend on groceries and frivolous stuff. Mainly coffee.

Do you need to change your goals? Adjust your expectations? Raise them (hopefully )?

I think I need to raise my grocery goal to $750. That's still quite a bit less the over $900 in January, but I have to try. I am going to allow myself $25 in coffee for the month of February. I also need to get busy in the decluttering area.

If you are joining us again next month, what can you do differently to make that month better?

I just need to keep tracking. This was really an eye opener for me. I am excited that we didn't use any credit cards and only spent $7.00 at Taget.

How did you do this month? How do you feel about it?

Honestly, I feel really crappy about it. However, I am motivated to do better in February.

I think you did GREAT!! Not using credit cards all month? Priceless. And having 8 no spend days is pretty good for a Mom of six!!! And you stuck with it and kept a great budget. I think you did just fine.

I did really well I thought.

I am going to continue this way forever!
Junk food is down as is frivilious spending.
Probably spent a lot more on food than normal (blame the pregnancy for that) but overall the bank balnace is full and I have less junk in the house. Its all good.

Do you see any patterns?

I overspend on junk foods. It's a new trend since Lachlan was born, so I am hoping it curbs soon.

Do you need to change your goals? Adjust your expectations? Raise them (hopefully)?

I need to keep working like I did this month to lower out $1,000 grocery bill. As noted in another thread, there isn't much I can do BUT I am working hard and it is paying off.

If you are joining us again next month, what can you do differently to make that month better?

I need to be better about fast food and junk food. Soda intake should decrease and be bought on sale only and never at the convenience store.

How did you do this month? How do you feel about it?

I did do much better about making school lunches instead of buying, and I bought many bulk groceries from great sales. I also spent less in consignment shops. So I guess the biggest thing is the junk food and fast food andkeep lowering the frivolous spending.
