What if one already has a 3--6 mo EF, but would still put the money in savings? I didn't see an option for that.

we were going to wait till sept and preschool was free to send him to a local montessori but with the extra money sending him sooner is a lot more affordable and will guarantee he gets a spot there in sept.

I'd spend it on things I want. We don't have any consumer debt, we have an emergency fund of 3-6 months, and we are moving/buying a house at the end of the month. I'd put $800 toward rugs for the wood floors in the new house (didn't have those in our last house). I consider these wants, we could definitely make do without them.

I voted buy something we need. We're saving up for a wood burning stove and some solar panels. Eventually we'd like to convert our entire electrical system to solar, but know that will be a slow process for us given our finances.

I put that I'd buy something we want. I'd get everyone something small that they want and then save the rest.

I would probably put it in savings to visit the ILs in Germany or if they decide to visit us. It will be expensive either way.

What I meant was, it's ridiculous that you are penalized for saving money. $1800 is not a lot of money in the long run. A one time windfall like this is not going to make a whit of difference in your big financial picture. I can't believe the government would take you off food stamps for depositing this check - which the gov't itself gave you - in a savings account. It's this backwards mentality (on the gov'ts part) that prevents people from improving their situation.

Its terrible. in our state, they wont let you have food stamps if you own more than 2 cars.

In my state you couldn't have any car newer than 12 years, I think they only recently changed it.

They had just crazy things that they would turn you down for. You couldn't have a savings account either. They even ask for all your bank information I guess to verify I'm not sure. This was about six years ago and I heard they did change a few things.

You are expected to sell the car and use the money to live from. Buy a nice little Pinto for a few hundred and you're set
