2/1: $1 at the library book sale (found a book I am selling on Amazon!)
2/2: spent nothing

Drove nowhere today; spent a long time decluttering and it feels great! About 4 large bags of stuff to give to Goodwill!

coffee shop date--Dh wanted to go to the kid-friendly coffee shop, but I told him I'm on a no-spend challenge. So he offered to treat! Guess that's officially a no-spend date!

$4.00 bus fare
$4.54 magazine (a major weakness).

So if I send DH to buy something, does that count?

2/1 - sent DH out for HPTs - went with the dollar store kind to save
2/2 - sent DH out to exchange bookshelves and make returns at Ikea - he bought a kitchen chair for DS2 but still spent less than he returned (made $20+)

Woohoo!!!! Went to a children's clothing swap at my church today and came home with bags of infant clothes for our new baby!

Such a relief because after three girls our infant clothes are worn out and buying new stuff (even at thrift stores) wasn't in our budget.

Very happy day for us! She'll be wearing lots of blue (because they had mostly boy things) but I've done a lot of pink in my time...blue will be nice for a change.

Goals:
22 No-Spend Days: 2/22
10 Let the Car Rest Days: 1/10
29 Fast-Food-Free Days: 2/29

01..
02..

I spent over $95 at Walmart today...but it was a stock-up trip...canned beans, canned fruit, steel wool pads, new mop, floor cleaner...sexy stuff like that.

I'm counting all that stuff as necessary spending, so as far as frivolous spending goes...there was none.

I didn't even get an Almond Joy that was calling my name loudly in the check-out line.

She won't mind at all, Pru.

Excellent on getting baby clothes without laying down cash. Did you trade your bigger daughters' clothes for them, or were they just free?

Technically we were supposed to trade for the clothes...but most people were bringing bags and bags of infant things and then taking one or two toddler things for their former infants.

They had an enormous surplus of itty-bitty stuff.

I was the opposite...I brought in big stuff and needed infant. So they told me to take whatever I thought we could use.

I spent $100 on a massage today, but it was a Maya massage intended to help with my infertility. I wish I could afford to spend that much on one for pleasure! I also bought some groceries, but I was very good and only bought what we really needed.

2/1: $4.12 coffee out with friend
2/2: $100 Maya massage + $19.80 necessary groceries

KEY:
True no spend
Necessary spending
Unnecessary spending

Wow! I went to a thrift store today and I have to say wow again! It was soooo cheap. I usually go to other thrift stores near me, but this one was a little distance (near a new to me dentist) and I got tons of stuff for $36. DS1 is out growing his 2t stuff, so I bought him five shirts and two pair of pants. I also got a pair of gloves for dh, a pair for me, 2 J. Crew sweaters, an Abercrombie sweater, a pair of Gap pants, a Gap skirt, and some Old Navy shorts. All that for $36. Woot. I did buy a coffee for $1.73 though.

1st $186 food; ate out w/ DSD $30
2nd $36 thrift store; $1.73 coffee

Goals:
Food: $186/$550
Eating out: $30
Gas: $0/$200
Diapers: $0/$60
Trip to NYC for interview: $0/$50
Misc.: $38/$40

Total Spent this Month: $216/$900

True No-Spend: : Spending Within Budget: Over Budget:

Jumping in here

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us anything you think it would help us to know about yourself.

I am a SAHM to one, with another one on the way. We live on one (decent) income, but rent is very high in this area and we have lingering debt (medical, student loans, etc).

2. Please tell us why you have decided to spend nothing (or spend significantly less) for the Month of February. Memorize these goals and recite them to yourself before all purchases.

I spend money frivolously, especially on eating out and craft supplies. I already have enough craft supplies to last 3 lifetimes! We have bascially nothing in savings, and we would like to buy a house someday.

3. No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?

Less eating out, no buying "stuff" online, more cooking from scratch.

Today I went to the uni library and picked up a bunch of books for a report. And then DD and I went down to the FREE exhibit at the city library - it's about fairy tales and very interactive. Her favorite part was the pretend food set out at the "Beauty & The Beast" display.

Then, I came home and made lasagna and used up some veggies from the freezer, leftover spaghetti sauce, homemade italian sausage. We can actually see the back of the kitchen freezer. If we can just resist stockpiling, we might make progress.

Though I haven't stated it as one of my goals, I would like to attack the mortgage a little more vigorously. I know it's not going to get paid off, but I'd like to see it drop more quickly. So, I signed up for the bank's online services, so I can check in on the amount every couple months. And I've started a jar fund that I am going to put change and small bills into. When it fills up, that money will go to the mortgage. It may only be a few hundred a year, but it's better than nothing.

DD is coming down with a cold, so we will probably be at home tomorrow. Maybe snuggling in front of a movie and some hot chocolate is in order.

OK I'm in for February!!

1. My name is Irene and my family and I moved back to San Diego from Vermont where I met one of my dearest friends Kundalini-Mama - Amy Donaldson (I love you!) She was very active on MDC and always kept reminding me to sign on! sign on! I love you Mamas! You have been an inspiration and a source of peace for me!

2. I have been a SAHM with my son Connor almost 2, since he was born. In Vermont it was MUCH easier to spend nothing! Especially in the Winter! Now that we live in California, it takes creativity to make my dh teacher salary go far. I want to continue staying at home with my son ... that's the best motivation for me.

3. My plan to 1 - cut grocery spending is to join a CSA and shop two times a week at farmer's markets in town. 2- Make meals ahead of time and freeze for the week. 3 - Stay out of stores!

Feb
1: 2.50 train ticket to see my friend up the coast.
2: NO SPENDING!!!

I forgot to mention that I made $10 on a cake for a friend yesterday! Which made up for the fact that my paycheck was WAY lower than I expected, AND I did some stupid spending today.
I went out to the symphony (free tickets! ) but I didn't have time to eat between work and leaving for the show so I spent $5 on some crazy overpriced junk food. : I'm going to deduct it from my "social spending" budget so I'm not short this month (every $ counts!) but I still get a for it AND I couldn't get a receipt!

February
02/01 $420 rent. Made $10
02/02 $5 over priced junk food snacks.

Goals:
  • 1/29 Save ALL receipts.
  • 2/29 Stay out of all stores other than the Co-op, Winco, Ross, dollar and thrift stores*.
  • 0/20 no-spend days :
  • $5/$60 social spending
  • 0/3 Yoga sessions
  • 0/8 1/2 hour+ walks
  • 0/~$150 Saving
  • Keep at work eating to a minimum (less than $25 per pay month)
  • Spend tax return only on budgeted expenses (car registration, fix computer, Burning Man ticket, etc.)
Key:
: = True no-spend; = Spending within budget; =Un-budgeted, necessary; = Un-budgeted and unnecessary

January's goal results:
* 28/31 Save ALL receipts.
*2/25 Stay out of all stores other than the Co-op, and Winco.
*17/20 true no-spend days :
*$46.20/$25 social spending
*0/2 Yoga sessions this month
*$27.40/$30 worth at-work eating
*~$60/$0 out of budget spending

*Dollar stores have a $5 per trip, 2 trips per month limit! Ross and thrift stores have a one trip per month/$20 limit!
