Hey, now you know what you're working with! You've got a goal to get under--anything under that $600 number for next month is going to be HUGE progress. And you will likely be inspired by that progress to cut it down even the next month!

Start at the beginning.

You're at the beginning.

We ALL started at the beginning. Many of us saying the same, "OMG!! I can NOT believe how much money I am frittering away!!"

Don't be ashamed! Use it to motivate you! Go through and start figuring out what you can ditch off that list from last month. And there's your plan! Having a plan feels gooooood! Sticking to it feels GREAT! In 30 days you will be in a whole different place. WELCOME!

Mimimapster I think you'll find that prefolds are fine with a newborn/smaller baby. I am not an expert on CD but I have CD'd my two existing kiddies and they've both worn prefolds from being little, so hold fire on the pockets! IME I think 8 prefolds and 4 fitted is enough for the early days unless you have big problems getting them dry, (but others may know more..........) so I say keep your money in your wallet!

I'm liking this no spend streak I've got going up. Plus I'm working so much that my pay cheques for April are going to be my best yet this year! This after being worried because we had so many fewer teaching days due to storms and March Break etc. So next month I get to pay off my credit card completely, pay off my provincial student loan completely and I may actually have some money left over... for me... so odd! After scrimping so much it's so strange to actually have some spending money. Some is going in my savings envelope towards the wedding I think but the rest, I'm going to get a good hair cut and my engagement ring resized and I'm going to buy a few articles of clothing that I desperately need and I'm going to get a few things for the house that we need. Hopefully Still going to try to have lots of no spend days but also going to be able to relax a bit more. I also got re-hired on to one of my tutoring jobs so I'm back to tutoring four hours a week.

My Key:
- No spend
- Spend within budget
- Neccessary but unbudgeted
: - Unneccessary and unbudgeted

01/03 - spent $40.00 on paint for office (at 40% off and have been planning this one and only CC purchase this month for a long time) $26.00 on a really nice meal out with Dbf, came out of last week's tutoring money and gift certificate.
02/03 - snow bound
03/03 - primed my office, nearly bought putty to fill holes in walls then found out I could use toothpaste
04/03 -
05/03 - went out for dinner but dbf paid
06/03 - Bought frames for my office and dbf's b'day present but went $5 over the cash I had (all I'm supposed to spend) so I put it on my CC
07/03 - and Printed pictures for office and dbf's present, got new thigh-high nylons, all within budget and bought new shoes for work not really in budget but on sale and I kind of needed them
08/03 - : $60.00 on Dbf's birthday dinner. Spent WAY more than planned.
09/03 -
10/03 - : bought tea out at a coffee shop with a friend
11/03 -
12/03 - Celebratory alcohol for engagement and DF's b-day
13/03 - Got paid for one tutoring job but not the other $10 into savings envelope
14/03 -
15/03 - paid off half of my CC! YAY! and then I spent all my spending money (not much) going out with friends but it was all in cash and I had a great time
16/03 -
17/03 - : Happy Saint Patrick's Day $20.00
18/03 - $6.50 on presents and school materials at Sally Anne
19/03 - Got paid for one tutoring job and put $20 in savings envelope
20/03 - : Ate out with friends $30.00
21/03 - Found drives to visit family, no spend
22/03 - Food out with friends $25.00
23/03 -
24/03 -
25/03 -
26/03 -
27/03 -

Goals For March:
*20 no spend days (Feb I had 17) 16/20
*Pay off some of CC Done
*Put $15 from each week of tutoring in saving envelope 2/3
*Plan out meals for each week to reduce grocery spending Done
*File taxes to put tax return on provincial student loan Done

Budget for March:
Income - around $900.00
- $560.00 to dbf for April bills
- $45.00 to savings
- $200.00 to CC (about half coming from what's still in the bank)
- around $60.00 spending money
- $60.00 to student loan
- $40.00 paint (on CC)

Mamimapster -- Put that money on your credit card. Or save it for when your MIL is staying with you and then if you don't need it, spend it on the pockets after she leaves.

Think of it this way -- your baby will not be here until July. Say you have $100 that you COULD put on your credit card...if you spend that money instead of sending it to the card then you are essentially paying INTEREST on that money for the next four months.

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the pockets -- you should -- but not yet. And definitely not when you are having panicky feelings...these feelings are a clue that now is not the time to buy. Wait...watch for great deals on pockets...and buy in JUNE. That gives you three months to try really hard at these no-spend challenges...you can save up a lot of money in those three months and have those pockets all ready by babytime.

Om Girl -- CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! When is your baby due? This is WONDERFUL news!!!!

Oh I spend plenty on groceries...but I only record ~frivolous~ spending. So mortgage, groceries, electricity, gasoline for the car...those are in my budget but not recorded here. Like Amanda, I only record groceries when I go over budget on things like ice cream, chocolate, wasabi peanuts (mmmm...) I have a "junk food" spend day counted against me in my tally...that was a day in the grocery store.

Some MDCers record everything they spend on this thread, some of us only record our slip-ups.

Daekini -- We'll help you. Just recording these purchases and keeping a running total will help you reign yourself in. My DH is a teacher too -- same deal -- we have to save for summer all the time.

Some MDCers record everything they spend on this thread, some of us only record our slip-ups.

Thanks for the explanation. Can you tell it is my first month around these parts...

So mamas, DC #2 is due the end of November...DH and I want to pay off all CC debt. So...I need to work harder at spending less money, while I build up a diaper stash (as I either sold or gave away all of them ) and stock up a layette.
DD is now 2 years old and I've simply forgotten all those things I'll need with a LO. So help remind me of the things I'll need:

We have:
  • changing table
  • crib (pointless, but we have one!)
  • bedside co-sleeper
  • toys/dolls/books
We're green, frugal and clutterless! Help me mamas!

March 1 - : $8.15 outside the grocery budget

March 2 - : $29 out to brunch with friends.

March 3 - Today I didn't really think about wanting anything. Maybe focusing is already helping!

March 4 - Spent the rest of the grocery budget, should be ok for 1.5 more weeks. Today was a tough day. I really wanted nothing but just didn't want to think about money. DH was rejected from another job because he is a student and does not have a flexible schedule. Tough, tough, tough.

March 5 - Good day here! I sold our stroller system that is too small on Craigslist and I billed a client for completed freelance work. Both of those payments should be in by the end of the week! Less stress for me. The Craigslist money will go toward additional groceries/savings if no groceries are needed. The freelance money will go toward debt and a birthday present.

March 6 - Big decisions ahead. We are in a nanny share that we agreed to pay for X/hrs per week. My DH lost his job and we are not even using half those hours but paying for all of them. We would save $90/week if we backed out of the share and just had someone for the hours we needed. This is tough because if my DH gets a job the hours could be more. Decisions, decisions.

March 7 - : 5.18 on a birthday card and some printed pictures. I have payment coming in for freelance work. I am having a hard time not spending it before it gets here (ie take it out of savings and replace it or put it on the credit card and pay it off.) This is very, very hard.

March 8 - The In-Laws were here, stayed in and played with DS, very nice no spend day.

March 9 - No spend. I had a breakdown today though. I have a great DH and he was very good about it. We have to cut down on our nanny share and we had to tell the other family today and we have to discuss it with the nanny tomorrow. I have never had to cut down on a financial commitment before. It really is the best thing to do but it is very difficult for me, I am very prideful about my commitments, especially financial ones.

March 10 - : $88 on tickets home for Easter, not in the budget and we had to take from savings. I was feeling very calm about our state of finances yesterday. I realized there is an entire laundry list of things I can not envision moving past so I just need to focus on where we are at and those things will eventually be behind us. I also categorized our bank statements from all of 2008, our overspending is in Entertainment/Recreation (which we can control), Childcare (which we are working on) and Debt.

March 11 - No spend. The only thing that is frustrating me today is that I can not get a grip on why DH can not get a job. It makes me want to move to a low cost of living area and be miserable just so we don't have to struggle. This is not realistic, just emotional.

March 12 - No spend! Stayed within the budget for groceries and are doing good. I really appreciate that my DH said "there is $6 left over". Amazing in our house!

March 13 - Deep breathes, pay day looms ahead.

March 14 - Thanks to the ladies here I took $100 and put it where it belongs instead of keeping it for "us". I am also expecting payment for two freelance jobs this coming week that will total $430 which will help purchase two gifts, DH's school books and the rest will go toward debt. Thank you

March 15 - No spend! In order to avoid buying a new carpet I didn't go "browse" we just stayed home and played. Very, very hard but totally worth it.

March 16 - : $23 on brunch, it will come out of the grocery budget so obviously it wasn't spent on groceries. The time with friends was nice but we could have made just as nice a meal at home for all of us for less.

March 17 - No spend, good day, feelin good!

March 18 - No spend for me, I'm feeling ok about it. I would feel better if DH was not spending on silly things.

March 19 - March 24 : We went home for the holiday. We took out budgeted cash before we left. Despite this we ended up taking out more cash and it was not budgeted $325 from savings. Ugh. I can't believe it. Why, Why, Why do we do it. So frustrated.

March 25 - No spend! DH had a good interview today which is a wonderful sign. Today I am struggling with being a WOHM. I need to focus on paying down our debt so my job is not "so important" and perhaps I could take a part time job in the future.

March 26 - No spend, home sick.

March 27 - No spend, DH home sick.

March 28 - TBD Today is payday. THE HARDEST DAY OF THE MONTH. I really want a latte from Starbucks (don't need it). I would love to go out for lunch (I have lunch with me). I just want to spend, spend, spend. I don't need to spend. It is SO TEMPTING. Help! I need to go to the bank at lunch time. I need to resist Starbucks, Food and Taxi's.

Key:
- No Spend/Spending in Budget
: - Not in Budget/Not Necessary
Notes for Perspective - Items I "want" but don't desperately "need"/Thoughts on money

February:
Total overspending in February $666.45
Total no spend days - 14

OKay, so its a little late to join for March, but I wanna get it all down so I can c & p for april and keep myself to it between now and then

I'm Kerri. We're living off what money we can make each month plus savings as DH does a job here or there in his field (welding) while DH finishes welding school. We're doing the DR program and hope to be out of debt completely by May and have set aside enough money by August (working all summer) to get through December of next school year. 2 kids, both SNs. DS requires therapy 1x wk. but has 2 weeks off in the next month, and DD requires on going treatment in G-ville, 1 tank of gas away, but none is planned for April. Our budget month runs fomr the 21st-20th of each month. We're doing this in hopes of needing less and being able to save more towards our 3-6 month emergency fund and the motorhome we need when DH finishes school (since selling the house to buy it isn't happening in this market!)

Goals from now to 4/20
0/21 no non-work driving days
0/18 no spend at all days
Non gas budget: 0/70
Gas budget: 0/380 (DH has to drive 120 mi/day for next 6 days and I drive a daily paper route)

DD is now 2 years old and I've simply forgotten all those things I'll need with a LO. So help remind me of the things I'll need:

We have:
changing table
crib (pointless, but we have one!)
bedside co-sleeper
toys/dolls/books
We're green, frugal and clutterless! Help me mamas
I'm in the same boat...this baby is coming in June and I seem to have developed amnesia about what babies need. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is:

1. diapers (sounds like you are working on that)
2. clothes (plenty of inexpensive baby clothing out there)
3. car seat

Are you breast feeding? Will you need a Boppy? Lanisoh? Things like that?

I'm trying really really hard not to acquire any more baby-stuff this go around because we are clutterless too and I want to stay that way.

I'm getting a swing and ultrasaucer and a changing table...but all from a friend who said she will gladly take them right back after we are done using them. I don't want to ~~own~~ that stuff anymore.

Congratulations again!!!

Crunchy VT Mom Happy Birthday!!!! Enjoy your dinner (you have the same birthday as my ex-husband, btw).

As long as I don't go anywhere or buy anything today, I will meet two more of my goals for the month. Whoo-hoo!!
