Was going to hold off and do all my shopping tomorrow but I needed out of the house and decided it would be easier to decide on pictures for DBF's present if I'd bought the frame first. So today, tomorrow and Saturday are not going to be no spend days But I'll make up for it the rest of the month! That's for the encouragement Crunchy VT Mom

My Key:
- No spend
- Spend within budget
- Neccessary but unbudgeted
: - Unneccessary and unbudgeted

01/03 - spent $40.00 on paint for office (at 40% off and have been planning this one and only CC purchase this month for a long time) $26.00 on a really nice meal out with Dbf, came out of last week's tutoring money and gift certificate.
02/03 - snow bound
03/03 - primed my office, nearly bought putty to fill holes in walls then found out I could use toothpaste
04/03 -
05/03 - went out for dinner but dbf paid
06/03 - Bought frames for my office and dbf's b'day present but went $5 over the cash I had (all I'm supposed to spend) so I put it on my CC

Goals For March:
*20 no spend days (Feb I had 17) 4/20
*Pay off CC
*Put $15 from each week of tutoring in saving envelope
*Plan out meals for each week to reduce grocery spending Done
*File taxes and put tax return on provincial student loan

Budget for March:
Income - around $900.00
- $560.00 to dbf for April bills
- $45.00 to savings
- $200.00 to CC (about half coming from what's still in the bank)
- around $60.00 spending money
- $60.00 to student loan
- $40.00 paint (on CC)

Another spending day, sigh. This weekend I'm starting to redecorate my DDs' bedroom. I'm happy with the spending I've done so far, I picked up a couple of gallons of oops paint and I splurged on some cute (NON DISNEY) castle and fairy wallpaper cutouts. If I'm careful I *might* be able to sew some new curtains and bedspreads and come in under $100 for the project.

March 1: budgeted spending: $129.89 household/misc., $217.63 grocery store, $209 Let's Dish (groceries)
March 2: no spend
March 3: budgeted spending: $15 school milk/juice for snack time (groceries), paid kids' monthly bowling league fees
March 4: budgeted spending: $42.13 gas, $30.64 lunch out, $45 school field trip
March 5: no spend
March 6: budgeted spending: $47.29 on paint, supplies and decorations for the girls' room. (household/misc)

My goals for March:
2/15 true no-spend days
6/31 no credit card use
0/5 no drive days
3/10 drive more than 50 miles in a day
$441.63/$600 groceries
$222.18/$300 household/misc.
$42.13/300 gas
$30.64/200 eating out/take out/entertainment
225/1000 minutes on the treadmill

New signature, same old me: Ann- mama of 2 boys and 2 girls, partnered to a fabulous man.

Ok, just joining now....a few days behind everything this month!

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us anything you think it would help us to know about yourself.
I'm JD, not a mama yet but hoping to start TTC in mid to late 2009 if I can get our family finances in order. I work full time and DP works nearly full time, but is tragically underpaid. We live in London which is very, very expensive.

2. Please tell us why you have decided to spend nothing (or spend significantly less) for the Month of March. Memorize these goals and recite them to yourself before all purchases. We are living month-to-month and are always stressed and frightened about money. I have an enormous amount of student loan debt. We need to move into a slightly larger house at some point and I want to be saving to get ready for a baby!

3. No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?
The plan is:
-Keep track of all income and expenditures
-Clean out unnecessary things and sell on ebay
-Make 10 stock items for Etsy shop and get shop started
-Procrastinate on buying unnecessary items (clothing, shoes, 'treats,' etc)
-Reduce 'going out' (drinks and dinner) 3x total for all of March - have people over instead, or meet them to do free things

My spending key:
No Spend
Budgeted/Necessary Spend
Non-budgeted/Unnecessary Spend
:Cycling day (no transport cost)

I'm just going to start from yesterday, because I don't have the time right now to dig through things from earlier this week. I'll add them in to this post later.

3/1- $6400 for new car, $47.00 for lunch, 11.40 for dinner, $47.93 gas
3/2- $259.98 for new car detail, $69.01 REI for BOB stroller, $24.23 Costco for laundry soap, $92.19 for groceries at Trader Joe's
3/3- DH needed gas, $50.51. I spent nothing but I did drive my car to see my Mom and a friend.
3/4- $2.68 for dish soap
3/5- No spend day! I did drive to see a friend but no spending
3/6- $7.97 groceries (bought yeast so I could make my own bread), $20.00 DH spending money for the month

Totals:

New Car $6659.98/$6000
Groceries $100.16/$350
Eat Out $58.40/$0
Baby $69.01/$0
Household $26.91/$0
Gas $97.94/$100
DH Spending Money $20/$0

DH took out $20 cash last night since he was going to a bar for a friends birthday party. I was kind of peeved about it but instead of making an issue I just said "Alright, that $20 is your spending money for the month, do with it as you wish". He was like "For the whole month?". Yep, so spend it wisely. I think he may have spent it all last night but I didn't ask. I think for him to having some spending cash will help to keep us on budget. Also since he has it in cash, when its gone its gone.

Jenna in love with my DH Jon, loving our 2.5 year old, Caroline Tulip, and expecting another little one in August!

DH and I are going to go to Costco today or tomorrow. I am hoping we can actually save money by buying things there, as long as we stick to our list it should be a smart move. I think we are going to get:

Organic Milk (you get 1.5 gallons at a time, we go through a gallon a week so it won't go bad)
Toliet Paper
Ground Turkey (you get 4 packs at a time, I don't remember the price per pound but I know its cheaper then Trader Joe's. We usually use about 2 pounds a week, so I can freeze the other two)
Fruit (probably bananas and blueberries)
Bacon (it comes in 2 packs so I can freeze one)
Organic Eggs
DH Razors (last time I bought him some they last 1.5 years)
SoniCare Tooth Brush heads (we need new ones and this is the cheapest place to get them)
Juice (they sell very good quality Odwalla juice for much less then Trader Joes or other places)
Beer (DH gets to get a six pack every week, they sell a 24 pack of his favorite beer for $19.00, at Trader Joe's a six pack is $6.99, so this saves money, the only catch will be that I am not buying more beer for 4 more weeks, so he will have to ration

There might be a couple other things but my plan is to only buy what is on my list. If I see something I think we would really use I am going to write it down and then next time we go I can evaluate if I think the item would actually get used. Also, besides the things I listed, FOOD ONLY! DH and get in trouble at Costco getting things like clothes or non-food items.

Jenna in love with my DH Jon, loving our 2.5 year old, Caroline Tulip, and expecting another little one in August!

Goals:
7/20 No Spend Days
7/31 Fast-Food-Free Days
2/10 Let the Car Rest Days

Yahoo!! I'm on a roll.

It is amazing how much of my spending is just habit. When I have several days in a row where I don't go to the stores, then it seems easier not to go to the stores. I'm really hoping to make it to the 15th.

We're painting our living room this weekend (we bought the primer and the ceiling paint, but haven't actually bought the wall paint) so that will involve some spending, but hopefully we can JUST get the paint and not any extras.

Plus that painting will keep me busy and out of the stores next week.

I got some "motivational" books at the library yesterday.

The Tightwad Gazette
Total Money Makeover
Your Money or Your Life

and

Clearing Your Clutter with Feng Shui

I've already read these before, but hopefully reading them again will inspire me to stay home and not spend...and clear out some of our junk.

March 1 - : $8.15 outside the grocery budget

March 2 - : $29 out to brunch with friends.

March 3 - Today I didn't really think about wanting anything. Maybe focusing is already helping!

March 4 - Spent the rest of the grocery budget, should be ok for 1.5 more weeks. Today was a tough day. I really wanted nothing but just didn't want to think about money. DH was rejected from another job because he is a student and does not have a flexible schedule. Tough, tough, tough.

March 5 - Good day here! I sold our stroller system that is too small on Craigslist and I billed a client for completed freelance work. Both of those payments should be in by the end of the week! Less stress for me. The Craigslist money will go toward additional groceries/savings if no groceries are needed. The freelance money will go toward debt and a birthday present.

March 6 - Big decisions ahead. We are in a nanny share that we agreed to pay for X/hrs per week. My DH lost his job and we are not even using half those hours but paying for all of them. We would save $90/week if we backed out of the share and just had someone for the hours we needed. This is tough because if my DH gets a job the hours could be more. Decisions, decisions.

March 7 - : 5.18 on a birthday card and some printed pictures. I have payment coming in for freelance work. I am having a hard time not spending it before it gets here (ie take it out of savings and replace it or put it on the credit card and pay it off.) This is very, very hard.

Key:
- No Spend/Spending in Budget
: - Not in Budget/Not Necessary
Notes for Perspective - Items I "want" but don't desperately "need"/Thoughts on money

February:
Total overspending in February $666.45
Total no spend days - 14

3/1- $6400 for new car, $47.00 for lunch, $11.40 for dinner, $47.93 gas
3/2- $259.98 for new car detail, $69.01 REI for BOB stroller, $24.23 Costco for laundry soap, $92.19 for groceries at Trader Joe's
3/3- DH needed gas, $50.51. I spent nothing but I did drive my car to see my Mom and a friend.
3/4- $2.68 for dish soap
3/5- No spend day! I did drive to see a friend but no spending
3/6- $7.97 groceries (bought yeast so I could make my own bread), $20.00 DH spending money for the month
3/7- $97.29 at Costco ($52.34 on household, $44.95 on food)

Totals:

New Car $6659.98/$6000
Groceries $145.11/$350
Eat Out $58.40/$0
Baby $69.01/$0
Household $79.25/$0
Gas $97.94/$100
DH Spending Money $20/$0

We stuck to our list at Costco today! They actually didn't have a few items I had planned on getting (SoniCare toothbrush heads, organic eggs and juice) so we ultimately spent less. Over half the bill was on the toliet paper and razors we bought. DH's razors will last about a year and the TP a couple of months, so thats good. It seems like this is the month household items needed replenishing (of course the month I am trying to spend less, lol

I was tempted to get some tortelini pasta there but didn't because it wasn't on the list, but I think I will next time because that is something DH and I would eat!

You know, since this is the first month I am doing this my budget was totally ill planned but its been so nice to track this spending. It will be great for writing a budget next month. I can look at what I have spent so far and see what I can do without next time or what I need to write into my budget next time. Like dog food. I haven't had to buy any yet this month but I know I will in the next few days. Of course I have to budget that in next time, can't really stop feeding the pets, lol.
