How do you guys do this?
If I were good at it, I wouldn't need this thread!

I'm ~~~awful~~~ at avoiding things when I'm in the store. I'm trying to learn to be better.

For me, staying OUT of the stores is crucial.

If I'm not there, I don't see the item and I don't want it.

I'm also working really hard (this month) on writing up a list...I have a list on my fridge right now of "things" that I need to buy (batteries, hangers for the girls closet, scouring pads...that sort of thing). I'm trying to only go to a store ONCE this month...with blinders on...just buying things on that list.

I figure if I still need those same things in two weeks when I go on my monthly store trip...then they really are needs. But if in the meantime we find out we can do without those things, then maybe I'll take them off the list.

Going into the store with a list and blinders on -- don't even LOOK at the bargains -- should help you.

Oh and I can't go into Target at all.

I can't even set foot in that store.

Target could just charge me $50 at the door to enter the store and I would pay it. Because they are going to get that extra $50 anyway, why not cut to the chase and hand it to them when I walk in?

I have to buy "household supplies" at stores that I do not like nearly as much...Walmart for example.

I purposely go to that store because everytime I'm in there I swear I'm never coming back (our Walmart is extremely crowded)...and I actually TRY to go there on Saturday afternoons because that is one miserable experience and I'll get out sooner.

But Target? I could linger in there all day...

Hi Ladies! I'm Stacie and I'm a SAHM to Joey and Faith (2.5 and 4 months, respectively). We're buying a large piece of property and another house at the beginning of next month and need approximately $23,000 to close. Since we're hanging on to our first house (it's becoming a rental) we don't have a large chunk of cash. Here are my goals:

*Sell extra car. Hubby works at home 3 days a week, so there's really no reason for us to have two vehicles.
*No meals out. We can do it for one month, and it will save us a fortune.
*No recreational shopping. Since we will be moving into my parents' house for a week or so before moving into our new house, we need to empty out the pantry and freezer anyway. If I do a little pre-planning, I doubt I'll have to go anywhere except the farmers' market.

Thanks for this thread!

These are great suggestions. I do think making a list and sticking to it would be helpful. I do better when I have a list and try to focus on the list. My DH will go to the store w/ the grocery list and come home w/ just what's on the list. I tend to buy too much of extra stuff I see.

To be honest, sometimes it frustrates me b/c when dh shops he doesn't pick up other stuff we could use, just the list stuff, and usually that's not enough. I go the opposite extreme. I think I have some anxiety all the time about not having enough or not having what we need. It's irrational b/c we have MORE than what we need. But there it is. I get mad at dh when he's been doing the shopping and we run out of stuff. I never run out of stuff or let us run out. But I also do stupid, stupid, wasteful stuff too.

Maybe I need to keep a more complete list? I used to have a list on the fridge we would add to when we thought of stuff. Maybe that list needs to go back up. And a little inventory of the pantry and fridge before leaving for the store would be good.

Dang, it is hard to keep the blinders on though. SO hard!

And staying out of stores, that's a challenge too. I often go to the store when I'm bored. Or the mall. At least it's someplace other than home and the kids can go with. But you're right that if you don't go to the store you don't see the "bargains" and you never miss them.

So far today I'm good. It's only 2:00 though. I did win one Ebay auction from yesterday. For $2 plus $3 shipping. Add another $5 to my unnecessary spending.

Oh, I'm not upset that we are giving her the money. I'm irked because we weren't even 24 hours into the month without rewriting the budget.

I'm like OMG - can we just have ONE MONTH go according to the written plan?!

UFO's are UnFinished Objects.

They are craft projects (knitting, crochet, and sewing) that I have laying around half finished. I had probably 30-ish laying around undone at the end of March. Most of them were seaming and weaving ends. I have an apron I started two months ago and is only half done (laying on the dining table). I have some shorts of my husband that need a patch (laying on the dining room floor since last SEPTEMBER) and I have several baby sweaters that need buttons sewn on so they can be put away for the future baby Moore. And two weeks ago I started a baby quilt wall hanging that needs to be completed, AND I want to make myself two new skirts.

I have a lot to do, and I decided that since we have cut the cable and I'm home for probably another month (need to find a job!) that I can use this time to get my projects done so that we can find the guest room bed under all my messes!

Apr 2 -- Groceries: $51, Post Office: $31, Linens & Things: $15

Even though I spent $96 today, I still feel good. The grocery bill was a little higher than I wanted, but still under regular budget. The post office bill was so high because I stupidly lost our mailbox key and had to get it replaced (they had to change the lock, so a charge of $25). I was pretty annoyed with myself when I found out yesterday, but by today I was over it. It just come out of miscellaneous, which is teeny tiny to start with but that's life. The Linens and Things purchase was this awesome narrow trashcan that fits perfectly b/t our fridge and counter. I paid with it from some cash I had found that my uncle had given me for Christmas 2 years ago . I had that cash earmarked for things to organize the kitchen, and I came in under budget. Our kitchen looks great! And, I got in and out of the LNT store with only the purchase I had planned on getting the night before when I was looking at their website.

-- No Spend
-- Spend within Budget
: -- Unplanned/Unbudgeted Spending

1/30 -- No Spend
1/30 -- Budget Spend
0/30 -- Non Budget Spend

Week 1 -- 18 miles/100 miles

Mommy to two super cute kids.

I DID spend money today - I had to stop at Walgreens for eye medicine and stockings since I tore the crotch out of my last pair. But I only bought eye medicine and stockings and nothing else, and since neither of those were avoidable, it's a good day!

Spending all of my money and time on this wild, wild life.

Yes, those things were budgeted for, so I still get my ! I am sooooo excited to get the new mattress, I bought it from an mdc mama who owns a natural bedding store. I thought it would take forever to have the money for it, but we got a big tax refund when I wasn't expecting to have one at all.

Llamalluv, I love the term UFO. I have lots of those myself. DD was looking through my fabric to pick what she wanted me to use for some clothes for her and I realized just how many unfinished sewing and other craft projects I have.

Key...
True no spend
Spend within budget
unbudgeted but needed
unbudgeted and totally not needed

Goals
2/21 no spend/spend within budget
36.41/$300 gas

more no drive days (I think I only had 3 last month)

We may be "blowing our budget" early this month. Dh said his brakes are squeaking really bad. We knew this was coming and have money in the bank for stuff like this but it is not actually budgeted for. My dad said he will pay some of the bill for my birthday though so that is a plus. Just pray that it the kinda of fix that is the $89 brake special and not the $500 one.

A few weeks ago I signed my kids up for piano lessons. Now I have to try to "find" the room in our budget for them. Gonna use this month to see if there is any wiggle room. When I did No-spend in Feb., I treated each budgeted amount as money that was available, this month I'll treat it as a ceiling I want to avoid hitting, KWIM?

4/1 $27.61 Groceries, $10.15 pet/household, $39.09 Gas, $6 car wash/household
4/2 No-Spend day!

2 no-spend days per week
2/30 no-credit card days
0 unbudgeted spending
Gas - $39.09/$220
Groceries - $27.61/$450
Household - $10.15/$125
Eating Out - $85

- budgeted spending
- no-spend day!
- unbudgeted, but necessary

All right, I'm here for month 2!

1. Please introduce yourself and tell us anything you think it would help us to know about yourself.
I'm Jamey, not a mama yet but hoping to savesavesave so I can start TTC in 2009. I work full time, and my DP works nearly full time, and have oodles of student loan debt that I need to sort out!! I also live in one of the most expensive cities there is.:

2. Please tell us why you have decided to spend nothing (or spend significantly less) for the Month of April. Memorize these goals and recite them to yourself before all purchases.
We have been spending without keeping track of our money and not putting any away for savings. I'm tracking expenses to create a realistic budget and then see what needs cutting out to pay down debts. Also, I buy too many useless things! One of my major goals for the month is to cut out needless grocery buying. I can waste money at the grocery store like nobody's business!

3. No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?
