Ok. Well, after reading more replies and spending too much money these first few days of August, I've decided that we need to seriously curtail our spending the rest of the month. We're going on a "vacation" at the end of the month to visit my parents, and I'd like to spend one night guilt-free and kid-free while we're there, so that means paying for a hotel. Our trip is already mostly paid for - except the petsitter and sundries. So, my goal is to find some extra money by spending less and hopefully working toward emptying our storage unit and not paying that bill anymore:

1 - 0
2 - $500 on new car seats, avoided Sonic on the way home - but then ate out for dinner $25
3 - $150 DH got groceries - hadn't gone grocery shopping in over a week - I think he did ok on not buying unnecessary things
4 - $65 more groceries, just in cast TS Edouard decided to make a mess of things - $3 on a coke and candy - $25 batteries, tylenol, bandaids (needs) - washed out and filled 4 water storage canisters that we've had since Hurricane Rita (unused so far) - soaked a pot of black beans - *received* $95 from doing some freelance typing a week ago
5 - about $250 emergency surgery for pet rabbit - not an optional expense, in my opinion

summary:
0/31 - no spend
5/31 - no extra driving
0/31 - working on emptying storage unit
$28 - unnecessary spending

expenses still to come:
$60 - housekeeper only one time this month
$40 - washer/dryer maintenance from Sears
$ ? - petsitter
$ ? - need new clothes (pregnant) - will offset by selling at Buffalo Exchange
$ ? - hotel for "date" on our trip

No spend =
Budgeted spending =
Frivolous spending =
Necessary spending & on sale = :

8/1
8/2 Groceries :
8/3 Meat for the month - on sale! So I'm under budget on groceries :
8/4
8/5 Bath tissue/paper towels for the month, again on sale :

So far zero frivolous spending. I aim to keep it that way for the entire month! I walked past starbucks today without going in and it was painful. Starbucks is my cryptonite.

5. : : 130,50 NOK (= 25 USD) groceries, 1200 NOK (= 233 USD) husband's dentist appointment, 298 NOK (= 58 USD) PCMSIA USB card for my laptop, since the USB ports are all broken. Threw away a completely green quarter of a bread that was hiding in the back of a cupboard, apparently those need to be kept tidier too. I gave away a monitor and a keyboard (the remaining monitor and keyboard it turned out my husband actually wanted to keep).

I have discovered a problem: I'm due to pay 35000 NOK (= 6796 USD) income tax mid-September and another 35000 NOK mid-November, and I haven't set aside enough money, so it seems I will probably not be able to make the mortgage payment that I was hoping for. I'm still struggling with the book that I resisted buying yesterday, but I still haven't bought it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Miracle-Spee...7968606&sr=1-2.

I might just have to buy it, ladies, what do you think? Should I buy it? I have all the previous eight books, and they're wonderful! It's only 17,65 USD!

I might just have to buy it, ladies, what do you think? Should I buy it? I have all the previous eight books, and they're wonderful! It's only 17,65 USD!
I sympathize with you. I love to buy books also!

If you can't resist buying it, try to find it used. It is on US ebay and UK ebay, but I am not sure about international shipping:

You could also see if Amazon has a used version.

It is also on half.com but they only allow shipping within the US. Is there an equivalent in to half.com in Europe that ships internationally? http://product.half.ebay.com/The-Mir...26364QQtgZinfo.

Spent a significant amount of money tonight on my parents' (mother/step-father) 25th anniversary party. Luckily, it was split 4 ways, so my grand total including gift was under $300. Having all 5 kids, 9 grandkids, and parents' best friends sit down together for a wonderful meal (prepared by someone else) was priceless. Felt a tad tacky (and actually made DH ask), but ended up getting cartons and packing up the remaining buffet food for everyone to take home - we easily filled up 15 cartons, and I was happy the food would not be wasted, the families would get to enjoy it again, and I felt mindful of our financial resources.
