1. Please introduce yourself and tell us why you have decided to spend nothing (or spend significantly less) for the Month of September.
i'm a mostly sahm mom of 2, a 3yo and a 1yo. while pregnant with dd i lost my pt job, i got unemployment for awhile then disability but now we are trying to make it on just dh's paycheck. i know i am nickel and dime-ing my money away, i'd like to stop that. we have a largish debt we want to pay off (from a mobile home owning fiasco). i just got a book at the library by the dave ramsey i heard about here.

2. No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?
this month my goal is to figure out a budget. also to really keep track of what i'm spending my money on.

3. Be specific! What are your goals? How many no spend days is right for you? Do you have a savings goal? Debt repayment goal?
debt repayment is definitely a goal. i'm not sure i quite get the 'no spend days'. right now i probably spend money on groceries once a week. and in stores or online on other stuff another day each week. would that mean right now my no spend days is 23? [31 days minus (2x 4 weeks)]

my specific goals for the coming week: eat dinner at home on the weekends. eat lunch at home 4x this week. lunch out w/dh on my work day i'm not cutting.

i'm starting with today.
Sept. 13th $15 on lunch $30 on haircuts for dh and me. $75 on gas. $3.65 on starbucks $20 on dinner (we had a gift certificate, but went over plus tax and tip). well, i'm not off to a good start.

Welcome Vaquitita!

Why don't you try tracking for a few weeks

23 no-spend days in a month is a LOT and if you are really not spending that many days, then you don't have a nickel-and-dime problem at all! you are doing great

But I bet, like most of us on this thread, you will find that money is slipping through the holes in places you weren't aware of. Keeping track for a month can be eye-opening.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Way to go! I wish I could say the same for me! I caved into a latte and scone today. I'm still programming myself to get in the habit of packing road snacks. Sometimes I'm just craving protein when I only think I'm craving caffeine.

On a brighter note, I have to brag. At the beginning of the September thread, I committed to a particular amount per month in savings. I underestimated my frugal abilities and have so far put in twice that. And we're only halfway to the end! :

i try to stay out of target, but when i do go then i throw in that $3.99 shirt for ds here, that $5.99 dress for dd there, $10 for a movie, $5 for a pair of earrings... the clothes could be considered just spreading out the cost of clothing the kids. as long as i stick to useful play clothes and not just pretty dresses.

i've been reading through the posts and realized i didn't count eating out in those no spend days. i've been working on eating at home/bringing lunch for me and the kids midweek. but on fridays i work with my dh and we eat out. and on the weekends we eat out atleast once a day, sometimes twice. so that would put me at 11 no spend days. so not eating out on the weekends needs to be a goal. though we get a lot of restaurant gift certificates through work, so the meals only cost what we go over (which we usually stick pretty close) and tax and tip. still i'd like to cut back to eating out only 1 day per weekend. i guess that would make my goal 15 no spend days? well i'll save that for october i think. this month i think i just want to track whats really happening, so i can plan better.

I was really hoping for a no spend weekend but Df and I ended up going out for dinner both days (there's a big music festival going on this weekend) so I bought dinner one day for us. I also didn't really end up using the pass I bought ages ago to it's fullest and I'm kicking myself about that now. I wanted to see all kinds of bands but I was just so exhausted I ended up going home really early. Could have saved myself $40.00:

01/09 -
02/09 -
03/09 -
04/09 - : (half day)
05/09 - $16 on bus tickets. Necessary as I need to bus to schools for work but still broke my no-spending streak
06/09 -
07/09 -
08/09 - : Taught and tutored but also spend $12 on a cab getting from work to tutoring. Paid for tutoring for the month!:
09/09 - :
10/09 -
11/09 -
12/09 - :
13/09 - bought dinner for DF and I $38.00
14/09 -

My Key
No spend - 11/30
Spend - 3/30
Taught - : 3.5/30
Tutored - 2/30
Income -

In - Out
$120 - $66

Goals:

- Spend absolutely NOTHING until I get some income
- Get a full time job : And get some part time teaching work
- Pay off some of CC - Done
- Re-apply for interest relief on student loan Done

Wow, I was really bad yesterday and today I think the extreme no spending was getting to me. Hopefully I can be good for the rest of the month. I think I'm going to see some music next weekend, so I have to make sure to be good when I'm there. I did put everything I spent in the last 2 days on my credit card. I think I'm going to start using my credit card for all purchases again and pay it off every month so that I get the perks (I have the REI Visa and will get a really nice dividend at the beginning of the year to get some outdoor equipment). I just figured out how to download all my transactions into Quicken, so I hope that will make it really easy to keep track of.

= no unnecessary spending today.
= unnecessary spending today.
: = no-drive day.

September 1: But only a minor faux-pas. I forgot to pack snacks, caved, and bought a 99-cent box of Jelly Bellies!
2nd My, my! We're not off to a good start this month! DD was driving me CRAZY, and I had to get out tonight to work on a speech I'm writing, and only the expensive coffee shops were open. I ended up spending $4.71 at Starsucks.
3rd
4th $110.00 in groceries
5th
6th I'm not sure which face to put up. I needed bras. Did I need the good kind from Victoria's Secret at $132.00 for three of them?
7th $10.00 church collection
8th : Wrote big fat hairy check to mortgage company :
9th $7.00 for weekly lunch date, (feeds three of us!) and nearly $6.00 for a storage caddy for some household clutter.
10th $110 in necessary groceries, $40.00 in necessary gas, $3.00 on an unnecessary latte.
11th : Paid one bill.
12th
13th Sugar-crashed. No food. In car. Needed. Latte. Scone. Now!! $6.33.
14th : $25.00 donation to church building fund, another $25.00 for church raffle. I argue that charity is necessary, but I'm struggling with how to incorporate it into frugal living without seeming like a miserly monster.
15th 11.00 on sink patch kit (needed), and "caulk remover" (maybe I'll return that). 10.00 on a new potty seat for DD, who's about to start learning that fine art . . .

In God we trust; all others must show data. selectivevax.gifsurf.gifteapot2.GIFintactivist.gif

1: WOULD have been a no spend day . . . until we realized the car seat we had bought didn't fit and I had to go out and spend 31.84 on another one (luckily I had some gift cards).

I really wanted today to be a no-spend. But there is no coffee at work, which means I have to go and buy some. I am not going to try to get through a Monday morning coffeeless. It's just not smart.
