I'm in. Hopefully I'll be getting a new job sometime this month as I have had several promising nanny interviews, but until then, I'm down to my last couple hundred dollars, so I can't spend a penny. No tortilla chips (my weakness), no expensive cherry tomatoes, just the basics.

My plan is to start selling off what I don't absolutely need (extra wraps, my old computer, etc.), and don't drive anywhere unless I absolutely have to. Maybe I could find some babysitting jobs too. I want to go shopping once a week at produce junction.

my no spend ways to try to keep me from going into credit card debt before I get a job..

-stay home, walk to parks, play outside (away from the kitchen) etc.
-go food shopping once a week at PJ
-eat air popped popcorn (no butter, no salt) instead of chips and salsa

I'll record it here, every time I slip up.

my toy shop on etsy.com: wooden baby keys, natural bathtub toys, wooden animals, little kitchens, waldorf dolls...also check out my blog about saving money, creating things, and natural living

November is here!
Dh and I have agreed to group our errands and put them off until a day we have to go out anyway so hopefully I'll get some true no spend days in there!

My key
= true no spend day
= necessary spending
= unnecessary spending
:= successful avoidance of eat-out/take-out/purchased snack day

1 - groceries, gift for birthday party, sippy cup for baby + :
2 + :
3 - winter clothes all from VV + some groceries + paid rent & 2.49 for a costume for ds' dress up clothes + :
4 = 7.50 for breakfast for 6 of us, ack, unnecessary spending by 8:00 a.m., hopefully the rest of the day goes better! += 2.25 for 2L Pepsi for a caffeine buzz to get me through the day + = 10.53 for prints we've been waiting to order (50 4x6, 5 8x10 and 5 sheets of wallets)
5 Ugh, a bad start 2 days in a row = 10.99 (celebration about Obama breakfast stuff and snacks at the grocery store) Today there will be more spending too, but it'll be paying for swimming lessons for the oldest three kids - hopefully that will be IT today!
6 = 1.50 for clamps for dh to fix a bedrail (saves us $50 for having to buy a new one! + $60 = dh insisted we go on a date last night so I could have a break (but we had to take 7mo and she was fussy the whole time so it wasn't a break, it was more stress... so I call it : spending... one step worse than unnecessary spending)
7 = groceries + :
Total unnecessary spending: $83.23

I've decided to keep a running total of unnecessary spending to hopefully make me stop and think before adding to it!

I'm doing this again this month. It's going to be a lean month for sure. Very greatful I have a little bit left over from last month!

Who I am
I'm NMY, I live with my Df and our three cats. I'm a substitute teacher which means my budget each month can change very drastically. We're hoping to get married at some point and get out of debt and then start having babies so we are trying as much as possible to save save save.

Goals for this month

- Have at least 12 substitute teaching days (I'm currently scheduled for 9.5)
- At least 20 no spend days
- Get a full time job :
- Pay off $100.00 on CC

How I'm going to do it
- Stick to the budget (which I will update soon)

I overspent on groceries. That's a danger of going to several different stores, sometimes I get to the last one and hit my 'limit' but there is still stuff we actually NEED. Need to work on that.
I did buy 4 Cmas gifts included in the grocery money so that's a plus

ETA I broke my no magazines rule BUT I don't regret it lol. I went to Sun Harvest, the HFS here and was so excited to see a 'crunchy' parenting magazine (besides mothering of course) that I snatched it up.

Kelly, newly single mom of four wonderful children.

11/1: but had to use 8 disposable diapers while I was stripping the cloth ones (I'm trying to use as few as possible to reduce spending and environmental yuckiness... it's a bad habit I've gotten into)

11/1 It was a good day. No money spent. I may still go to the store, but I'm positive I won't overspend because I've planned for it.

Well today I left the kids with DH and ran about a zillion errands, which would have taken me 5 different trips if I had had the kids with me because they get really antsy after just a couple of stops. I spent some money but it was all budgeted and necessary. I also deposited an insurance check and took out the months grocery cash.

1: budgeted necessary spending

0/20 no spend days
0/20 let the car rest days

Amanda, mama to Owen (11/05) and Connor (10/07) and Aria (12/09) Recycled Wool Longies and Reusable Baggies

I have been off the wagon for a few months and I soooo need to get back on.

a. My name is Kristine. I am a WOHM with three daughters. I am currently off on maternity leave and will be off until January. Things are tight since I have a very reduced income and was only back at work for six months between my last year long maternity leave and this one. Not that I am complaining. I am very lucky to live in Canada and get so much time off with at least some income.

b. My main goal is too stop my excessive spending.

c. My plan:

1. Have 20 no-spend days in November
2. Come on here and record all unneccessary spending
3. Do more meal planning and reduce our grocery bills
4. Go through my house room by room while I am still at home and declutter. Sell, recycle, donate or throw out all the stuff we don't need.

My Key

= No spend
: = Groceries
: = Planned necessary spending
: = Unplanned necessary spending
= Unplanned unnecessary spending

Off to a not-so-great start, but eh.

1: $5.80 library overdue fees. :
$5.97 at Bed Bath and Beyond. With coupon and Birthday GC, I got two Yankee Candles and some Green Bags. Happy late Birthday to me.
$.97 at JCPenney on three ornaments - let the kids pick their ornaments for Christmas since I had a $10 off $10 purchase coupon.

Total unneccessary spending - $12.74
Total no-spend days - 0/10
Total vehicle-free days - 0/10
Grocery Budget - 40/500

My Key:
no-spend days
: vehicle free days
spending that had to be done
: groceries that were needed/budgeted for
oopsies by choice
: totally unneccessary/unexpected spending

Woohoo! Here's to the Day One No-Spend!

I did realize today that I need a few supplies to make bath stuff, but instead of just logging on to my favorite site and ordering them, I started making a price spreadsheet, seeing which items are cheaper where, so I'll have a place to go and check out from where I should buy each thing. Smart, huh? Can't believe it took me so long to think of it, especially since there are orders of magnitude differences in price in some of these things.

So tomorrow I likely will put in the order. I'm completely out of apricot oil and down to my last couple of oz of almond oil...but not today!

The plan is simple (although tough to execute):

1. Vow not to spend any money on unnecessary purchases.

2. Come on here everyday and record your spending.

If you have time, please write an introductory message when you decide to join our thread. We would like to know:

a. Who you are
I'm Dianna, part time WOHM to 4 children, 3 under 3!!

b. Where you are going (your financial goals)
ewww! We have about $2K in medical bills, as well as tax bills for my husband's business. I REALLY want these paid off by April.
I want to eliminate unnecessary spending as much as possible.

c. How you plan to get there

I'm going to shoot for 10 no spend days right out of the gate.
I also want to continue to declutter as much as possible around here.
I'm planning on trading some outgrown baby girl clothes for boys clothes for the twins.
I want to GET RID OF (sell) my maternity clothes by the end of the month.
I want to sell my small (outgrown) diapers in the next 2 weeks.
I plan to start cloth diapering my little ones full time, to quit paying for diapers!!!!

Getting started:
Nov 1: great start! Didn't leave the house, and didn't spend a dime!
1/10 no spend days!

Catholic homeschooling mom of 5 - a teenager, a kindergartener, twin boys and a tiny princess. Follow the Adventures!

So, today sucked. I could just cry.

My IL are here, and I planned an awesome menu, where I only had to buy milk, eggs, butter. I bought those yesterday, and everything else was going to come out of my pantry etc.

Well they arrived late and I had really yummy corn chowder ready with fresh out of the oven bread. Later that evening I prepared a roast and was about to put it into the oven when I was told that no one was hungry for dinner. No problem, I'll just put it in in a while, but no. They decided that they wanted snackie food not a meal, and asked dh to go out and buy a bunch of crap food. *sob* So ya, spending that could have TOTALLY been avoided.

I am not crunchy enough for this forum. Everyday I get a little crunchier though! :

i've been on mdc for some time now, but have never ventured over here. glad i stopped by. i really NEED this. i've been stressing a lot about money lately and with the holidays just around the corner, i'm fearful that i'll go overboard (as usual).

my name is sam. i’m married with an 18-month-old dd. i currently started working part-time outside the home. i left my full-time job in march and took a few months off (but continued to live like i was still working full-time).

my long term goal is to get out of credit card debt. short term, i just want to become more aware of my spending and do away with all the unnecessary spending. i’m thinking if i see it all down in black and white it’ll help.

as far as how many no spend days or no unnecessary spend days i’d like, i'm not sure ‘cuz i’ve never done this before. i guess i’d like as many no unnecessary spend days as possible. i’m also looking for ways to pinch pennies anywhere i can and was hoping to get some ideas here. for example, i’ve been hanging the laundry out to dry lately (luckily i’m in southern california and can do that most of the year). i know it’s not much, but every penny counts right?

i do have weakness for books. i guess that can be a goal this month. to buy no books and flex my library card instead.

i just have a few questions about how all this works. do we record all spending or just those unnecessary things? do we record specifics or just general spending? also, to the last penny or no? it seems like i’ve seen it done many different ways.

anyway, that’s me. glad to be here. wish me luck.

11/1 - $8.20 groceries

Hi all
I'd like to join. I did these challenges for several months but dropped off when I had my third child in May as life got a bit overwhelming! I live in the UK so I will post my amounts in £ rather than $, to help me keep a track of my budgets. My aim being to meet my monthly budgets, which are:

Petrol/diesel for two cars: £220
Food: £75 per week therefore £330 p/mth
Clubs/activities: £31 p/mth playgroups, DH £12 p/mth,exercise for me £10 p/mth, family activities on weekends etc £15 p/mth
Miscellaneous: £20 p/mth (eyebrow waxing, haircuts for us all, school trips/snacks etc)

So, to kick us off:
Nov 1st: £43.04 food shopping, £2 weekend activity (wildlife club)

Today I need to get petrol, a few extra groceries that I couldn't get yesterday and may do some Xmas shopping with some cash that family gave me as a gift last week. (When I do spend that money, I'm not going to "count it" because it was a gift, IYSWIM)

Thanks for the thread Prudence - hope life with 3 is treating you well :

Welcome! :

There aren't any rules--you do what works for you. You may have to play with a few ways before you figure out what helps you most. Some people record every penny, some only things that aren't budgeted, some only things that aren't necessary, etc. Some people round, some record every cent.

What I do is record all of my personal spending (as opposed to our joint family spending), and I round to the nearest dollar. That's just what works best for me, though.

I did end up in Toronto yesterday, but my book wasn't instock. It gave me some time to think about it and now I'm glad because I can read it through interlibrary loan first and then decide if I want to buy it. I am also going to look for it used Today we're having family time, so no spend today

My Goals
1. Half the month with no spend days: 2/15
2. Unplanned spending 5 or fewer days: 0/5
3. Savings funded/not spent from (we've reevalutated the goals here and we will need to spend on necessary purchases from both the Freezer (if we find the perfect one this month) and Business fund, so we are just focusing on the Emergency Fund stock/no spend for November)
-Emergency Fund: $0/$135.00 added, 2/30 days with no spending
4. Minimum $150.00 on our next debt: 0/$150.00
5. Tim Hortons 3 or fewer days: 0/3

Key
: No spend on anything
: Necessary/budgeted spending
: Unnecessary/unbudgeted spending

November 1:
November 2:

Ugh! So the printer crapped out on me today. And I need to be able to print. I've got a craft fair tomorrow and I need to print signage and business cards like now! Sof off to Staples, but I get there an hour before they open (stupid daylight savings time) So to kill the hour and make myself feel better because I was already grumpy about the printer and now I was grumpy about the store not being open, I got sandwiches for lunch. So $16 for sandwiches, $200 for new printer, ink cartridges and 3 year replacement guarentee (I've got a 1yo and a 3yo, I'm pretty sure we'll use it)

1: budgeted necessary spending
2:: $200 unbudgeted necessary spending, $16 unnecessary spending

0/20 no spend days

Welcome Sam! Grace answered your question -- there are no rules for the thread. You record whatever will help you spend the least.

You can always change what you are recording mid-month if what you originally started recording isn't working for you.

Welcome back Patrick's Mum and Jenny! Great to have you on here again. Hold on tight!

Rachael (City Chic) didn't start the thread this month because she started a new job and she is very busy with that.
