They're a dumpling made primarily with stale bread and warmed milk, intended as a side dish with gravy.  I'm not of Bavarian/German descent, but I found a recipe for them after reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for the bazillionth time. They talk about something similar in that book.  I've used this recipe with success: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/semmelknoedel-bread-dumplings/

Cool - might have to give these a try. I like recipes that use up stuff on the verge of going bad. :-)

Tonight husband cooked - honey mustard chicken and mashed potatoes. A little on the cool side here this evening, so a nice homey meal.

Last night was Japanese rice bowls with marinated tofu, red cabbage, cucumber, and avocado (plus soy sauce, wasabi, and furikake rice seasoning). Tonight a b-day celebration, so hamburgers and veggie burgers, salad, fries/tots and a (purchased) ice cream cake.

That rice bowl sounds so good!! So the cucumber is warmed with everything else, put on top, or is the whole thing eaten cold?

We ended up with a mishmash of gluten free pasta with a quick chunky tomato sauce, sausage, shrimp, and feta tonight. I'm trying to clean out the freezer a bit so I can refill it in a more utilitarian fashion

Looks like meals this week will include:

Grilled chicken with grilled asparagus and goat cheese crostini
Grilled chicken caesar salad
Parmesan asparagus risotto
Black bean tostadas
Tuna patties

Yum! Your menu sounds so delicious and fresh! I'm in the process of cleaning out the freezer and filling it at the same time...probably not the best way to do it but

Today was my day off this week so I did some grocery shopping and meal prep.

Today: Spinach lasagna roll-ups with salad, homemade banana bread (plus more of both to feed the freezer)
Sunday: Crockpot salsa chicken with black beans and corn over jasmine rice (a big pot for two people, so probably lots of lunches out of this)
Monday: leftovers
Tuesday: Blackened tilapia, parsleyed potatoes and sauteed zucchini, yellow squash and onions

Husband wants breaded chicken for dinner, but I want to jazz it up a bit. Trying to decide what kind of seasoning to add to the breading - may do Milkwaukee Iron for a bit of heat. Not sure what I'm going to serve on the side... maybe roasted potatoes since we have to have the oven on for the chicken.

Which reminds me - I should do the baking while I have dinner in, so I can minimize how long I have the oven on. It's actually summer here now.

It was so hot I couldn't stomach the thought of turning the oven on, so I did the chicken on the stove top. Seasoned with Milwaukee Iron and braised in beer. I made a pan sauce to go with with the beer cooking liquid, about a cup of chicken stock, tablespoon of brown sugar and couple healthy splashes of malt vinegar. Turned out really nice! Served baked beans and baked potatoes on the side.

This one I did with warm rice out of the rice cooker plus cold/room temp. vegetables - I dressed the cucumber with a little salt, the red cabbage with vinegar and salt, and left the avocado plain because we had flavored toppings to add. You could cool the rice, too, if the contrast is unpleasant to you. Weirdly, cucumber is actually pretty good briefly cooked in a hot stir-fry, though.

Planning on pita with hummus/baba ganoush from a fantastic local place for dinner tonight, plus I will make a cucumber/tomato salad. Things have been going haywire, though, because one of my DDs has been having a lot of stomach trouble, so there have been a lot of stops at the burrito place when she is actually hungry just to get some calories into her.

I think tonight's leftover night will be asparagus risotto cakes with deli ham and some incarnation of frozen cauliflower. Last night ended up being canned tuna donburi as in this recipe http://www.humblebeanblog.com/2009/0...ocado-donburi/. Really neat/different way to use canned tuna. I had a friend from Japan who used to make something similar with tuna/soy/sugar served over steamed rice with little bits of steamed veggies on top. Simple, cheap, and tasty.

Back from a little weekend jaunt to the family lake house. We had a bit of rain last night, so it's cool - so I'm making a shepherd's pie.

Enjoying the farmers' market again. Spring risotto with asparagus, peppers and peas followed with homemade strawberry rhubarb pie.

I'm putting strawberries in almost everything right now. Breakfast oatmeal, midday smoothie, then on a bagel with creamy feta and spinach and arugala for lunch.....and finally the pie after supper.

Tonight I'm making chickpea curry with rice, probably with cucumber salad. Things have been all over the place foodwise here. One of my DDs is having some stomach trouble, so meals have been whatever she will eat, and we're not always all eating at the same time.

A little off our meal plan here. Had grilled steak with pouched green beans and potatoes on Sunday. Yesterday was leftover potato and green bean hash with eggs. Today I'm thinking a beef stroganoff type thing with the leftover eye round and...carrots? Then I have planned:

Crock-pot pork with salsa verde, rice, cole slaw (with lots of leftovers)

Chicken pieces with pesto/red pepper/feta/olive pasta

Pork with salsa verde came out really yummy. For those looking for crockpot recipes, it was this one: http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/sl...ith_salsa.html

Tonight we did chicken and dumplings a la kitchensqueen, minus the dumplings. I made sour cream drop biscuits on the side because we didn't have much time to cook.
