i am wanting to buy a few nice, heirloom-quality HARDCOVER cookbooks which can be traditional or vegetarian.

i have heard the deborah madison one is good to own..

any other suggestions?
i have ZERO hardcover cookbooks now.

How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman is a wonderful resource I also just got the new America's test Kitchen cookbook and so far it has yet to disappoint.

I have tons of cookbooks, but I use many of the same ones over and over.

All of the Moosewood cookbooks

The Southern Living Ultimate Cookbook (a great reference type cookbook, for cream puffs, chocolate pie, chicken casserole, muffalettas, any sort of vegetable, etc, although definitely with a southern slant)

Rick Bayless cookbooks. I have 3. They are time consuming, but delicious and authentic, and a great way to spend an afternoon discovering a new cuisine.

I liek "Whoel foods for the whole family" by LLL/ it is a good basic cookbook with tones of from scratch recipes..

Deborah Madison's "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone" is a *great* book, I've used it very frequently for more than 5 years. My other "go to" book is Madhur Jaffrey's "World Vegetarian". I'm a big fan of spicy and ethnic foods, and the book is a treasure trove of exotic dishes. It's also a very nice hardcover, with great color photos in the photo sections.

I have most of the cookbooks mentioned, the one I turn to the most is *Eat, Drink and Be Chinaberry* it is wonderful, every single recipe is great!

Yup, that's another I use quite a bit. Love the challah recipe, as well as the meatloaf recipe (I make a couple of tiny adjustments, such as using turkey), and several others.

The Joy of Cooking is a great book to hand down. I have given it, along with cooking supplies, to two of my stepchildren when they got their own places. It shows you how to cook just about anything.

I also love The New Best Recipes by the cooks illustrated people. I use that one very often and everything turns out great!!!
