I've used glass canning jars with good success. I frequently will put leftover soup into a mason jar but leave a good 2 inches of space. I let it cool, then put in it the freezer WITHOUT the lid, but put the lid in the freezer too. Then when it is frozen solid I put the lid on. Never had any problems with this way of doing it and I always have a million canning jars around.
