CSA=Community Supported Agriculture (sorta like a farm co-op).

I got watercress, radishes, kale, spinach, strawberries and some other kind of greens that I have no clue what it is.

Go to ask.com and ask how to find your local CSA. You should come up with a national site (I never remember the address, GAH!) that will lead you to a list of all the CSA's in your area. I think it's something like localbounty.com ?

We got lots of lettuce, spinach, and other greens and some tomatos, tons of herbs, sweet potato slips, seed potatos...something else, but I don't remember.

Produce day! We got chard, kale, scallions, a head of lettuce, mixed salad greens, beets, squash (yellow, zuchinni, and a summer squash shaped like patty pan, but it tastes like yellow), cucumbers, and basil. And garlic. Then, I raided my mom's house for more squash and jalapenos.

We're going out of town Thurs-Sun, so I gave my mom the head of lettuce and a good bit of the salad mix. I'm going to freeze some kale, make a quart of pickles, and freeze a good bit of squash (I have tons of it).

Tonight, we're having pasta with Italian sausage, summer squash, chard, and basil. I'll have bread along with it, with roasted garlic spread on it. It's an adaptation of a recipe from Greene on Greens. I'll post it if it's good.

I wrote all about CSA's here (pros, cons, how to find one, etc.), I talk more specifically about local harvest here, and I talk about what I got this week and what I did with it here I'll be posting about my share each week in case you want to get a better sense of what a CSA might be like, and PLEASE all of you in CSAs, I'd love to hear what you get and what you do with it too.

We pick up on Wednesdays and we got 1 lb spinach, 1 lb mixed greens, 3 heads lettuce, a huge bunch of scallions, about 10 stems of swiss chard, basil and a bok choy. We've eaten most of it except the chard and a little spinach.

Oh, chard and spinach! That's one of my favorite combinations. Here lately, we've eaten that in portuguese burgers (burger topped with greens and a fried egg, either on a bun or not), Italian wedding soup, and a meatless yummy soup I found here. http://tammysrecipes.com/vegetable_bean_soup_spinach

Our CSA pick up is today. Can't wait to see what we got!

We got strawberries, snap peas, asian greens, lettuce, turnips with the greens, and dill. Made a stir fry with the turnip greens and asian greens last night, with fennel and onions - Yummy!

Yesterday was pickup. We got chard, kale, collards, beets, leeks, yukon gold potatoes, cucumbers, 1 squash, wax beans, and basil to use. Then, I went to my mom's and got tons and tons of squash and some haricot verts.

I roasted potatoes last night. We'll eat the kale and chard mixed as a side dish. We ate the cucumbers in vinegar last night, we'll probably have that again (we love it), and for Friday night, we'll have bruschetta with basil goat cheese and cucumbers. The beets will be a side dish. I'll probably make 3 bean salad with the haricot verts and wax beans. That'll be good leftover for lunch, too. I'll grate and freeze some zuchinni, make zuchinni bread, a yellow squash cake from Greene on Greens. Plus, probably a squash casserole and maybe fried squash (lots of squash). And the collards will be a meal with cornbread and red beans and rice.

I will have to head to the farmers' market this Saturday to get more collards before they go out of season. Maybe they'll have turnips, too. Chard and kale are great, but turnips and collards are better. Last time I was at the fm, they had turnips with the bottoms on them---what a treat. I don't know if it's too late in the season for turnip bottoms or not.

The only thing that I don't know is the leeks. Any ideas? Can you use them like onions? They aren't as big as leeks in the store, about twice as big as a normal green onion.

Our pickup day is Thursdays. Last week our fruit share had strawberries, grapes, and peaches. Our half share had basil, oregano, red potatoes, asparagus, salad mix, green leaf lettuce, spinach, shitake mushrooms, water cress, garlic scapes, and tomato. Our CSA isn't completely local (most of that stuff wouldn't be ready in Ontario right now!) - they import organic produce from all over to supplement what they grow. So right now it's mostly imported organics, but as the summer goes on it'll become more locally grown.

The organic (local) strawberries were worth the price of the box right there! I swear, most of the local strawberry farms have switched to plants that yield well but don't have much flavour. The CSA strawberries actually tasted like strawberries!

I just love CSA pickup day. It's like Christmas for cooking nerds. You never know what unusual thing is going to show up! I'd never had watercress before last week; really yummy addition to a salad.

Picking up in a couple of hours - according to the weekly email, this week we'll get:

Strawberries, Asparagus, Red Butterhead Lettuce, Spinach, Shiitake Mushrooms, Watercress or Arugula, Fresh Green Onions, Garlic Scapes, Shell Peas, Zucchini, Basil, Spring mix

And our fruit box for this week will be strawberries, grapes, and oranges.

I'm telling you, it's like healthy eating Christmas around here. First zucchini this year (I LOVE zuchinni), and I'm loving the fresh basil every week for pesto.

Use them with the yukon golds for some potato-leek soup?

We picked up our first share this week. I am envious of those of you that get strawberries in your CSA box! We got green onions, red leaf lettuce, angel trumpet mushrooms, lemon basil, mixed spring greens, sprouts, and beets. That was on Tuesday, and all we have left is about half the basil, the mushrooms, the green onions, and a little of the lettuce!

We got:

red potatoes
basil
kale
garlic
leeks
arugula that's too spicy to eat, tastes like straight horseradish (ideas???)
cucumbers (tons of these)
zuchinni

Then, from my mom, I got mini sweet bell peppers in 4 colors, zuchinni, and yellow squash, plus a few beans.

The CSA I'm in is a few miles from my mom, and they have vastly different crops. My mom's greens are all done, and she has peppers and tomatoes. The CSA doesn't have any tomatoes or peppers yet (and we only have 4 more weeks of the season....I'm hoping they come soon)

Arugula idea: Pasta (like farfalle or similar)...heat up a cup of milk or half/half, melt a cup of crumbled blue cheese in it, pour the sauce over the pasta and mix in chopped arugula and halved cherry or grape tomatoes. Black pepper is good on this. Mmmmm

Spinach
Mixed lettuce
Herbs-basil, thyme, dill, cilantro, tarragon
Peas-sugar and stir-fry
Last week I got strawberries but none today.
My CSA delivers!
