One reason not to put the bed right up against the wall might be that a child could get trapped and hurt between the wall and the mattress if the bed was to shift. When we had a newborn and co-slept, our bed was up against the wall, we moved it out so that there was space between wall and mattress. For big kids I don't see it being as big of an issue.
