I've been slowly working on this for a few weeks. I thought I was kind of an extreme minimalist until I actually wrote down everything I had! It was like 160 or so. Including everything individually, except books (just haven't counted those yet, but it's like 30 books). I don't know what number I've got now, but it's very fun.

I'm at 144/150 and just done for the moment.
We start back up after my youngest goes to sleep for the night. We have family coming in on Monday afternoon, so today & tomorrow I need to get really busy!

I did get rid of 5 things today, but then we acquired some more belated presents. So I'll have to count how many we got today, and then get rid of five times that many on top of the five for tomorrow!

I assume the "get rid of 5 things for every 1 thing you bring into the house" doesn't count, like, groceries, as things you bring into the house.

Gray's Mommy - Wow!!!

Okay, I'm not listing everything that I got rid of. When I get rid of stuff, I have to do it fast or else I'll think of some off-the-wall reason to keep it. So, here's a general list of what I got rid of today:
about 15-20 books
a handful of old toys
empty CD cases
mail sorter
a garbage can that the dogs get into really easily (how silly to get rid of a garbage can while decluttering)!!
kids clothes

so I'm counting this as 6/150 - oh I've got a long way to go...

I think you should count these individually! Getting rid of books is really hard!
Good job sky*hawk

I'm in. I need to do this badly, if only to get in the habit.

So far:
1 stretched out nursing bra
1 kids game
22 items kids clothes
bottle washer
1 pr kids shoes
sunglasses
1 toy
(2) large stack magazines - I'm going to count this as 2 per the 10 sheets of paper rule = 1 item rule above, only I'm using it for magazines - there are at least 20 mags in this pile but I don't feel like counting past that

30/150

tho some are in a bin to take to goodwill and I will take those before the end of the challenge

Groceries are consumable. And being good stewards of the earth we bring in what we need and will use. SO they do not count in the one thing in five out. For that its "stuff", non consumables, space takers.

I'm just seeing this, but I want in! I'll have to start tomorrow, but since I'm planning to tackle my paper monster, that shouldn't be a problem.

I just bought four pieces of maternity clothes today...great, I guess that means that I have to get rid of thirty things tomorrow, to account for the four pieces of clothing, and today and tomorrow's five. Fun (I think )!

Crunchy wife to my high-school sweetheart, mama to DS (10/23/05) , DS (11/22/07) , DD (3/9/10) , and DS (5/26/12),  and three babies in Heaven.

OK, I counted up the belated Christmas gifts from yesterday, and there were 11 total. So I have to get rid of 60 things today! Yikes.

Agreed.

Here's what I got rid of yesterday:

1-20. electronic items - trash (I finally convinced DH to go through a box of his old stuff.)

21. window clings - trash

22. old power cord - trash (got the replacement one weeks ago)

23. outdated poster - trash

24. broken cat toy - trash

25. page of stickers - trash

I figure Dec. 26 - Jan. 31 is 37 days, so that's 185 things total I need to get rid of.

So I'm at 25/185, or 13.5%.

It's us: DH , DS ; DD ; and me . Also there's the . And the 3 . I . Oh, and .

You are correct in that I didn't count this week. I figure with it being January we will have sick kids or be sick or miss days here and there. So that's how I came up with five a day for january. However, if you want to add on extra items then THAT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!

I've never done a MDC challenge, but I'd love to try. My mom was actually very good at getting rid of things-although she loves to garage sale, so things seemed to come in and go at a rapid pace. I have a few challenges...my MIL is a hoarder and she loves to bring her things here--but I've been working with her on not bringing plastic dishware etc anymore for "health" reasons. Now if I could get her to stop bringing clothes and toys I'd be in good shape. I am also a teacher and although I am not teaching now, I still have lots of materials that need to be weeded out. I am an avid freecycler though! I could really use this!

Okay I'm not keeping an actual tally since I just need to go with the flow... but here is a general idea:

about 25 books
4 framed pictures
15 toys
5 kitchen utensils
bag of about 20 pieces of jewelry
all my notes from high school
5 old planners from the last 5 years

and lots of misc. junk as well. And I have more to do! Getting rid of 150 things will be no problem- it will be maintaining and getting rid of 5 for every one new thing that will be my challenge.
I'm feeling so great! I feel so much lighter now that I've given myself permission to let go of the past. I thought I would feel something when I realized it was time to let go of the notes, but really they meant nothing anymore. I'm excited to see what changes come my way!

I have a toddler! 7/27/09

Okay, so I'm gonna count the books individually from now on. I have a lot to get rid of, so here goes:
1 The pregnant cookbook
2 Hershey's cookbook
3 candy cookbook
4 bottle of shower gel
5 bottle of glittery body spray (why anyone would buy this for a 3 yr old I have no idea)
6 a handful of clothes that are too small for baby
7-37 old VHS tapes
38 pair of old sweatpants
39 The Vegetarian Beginner's Guide
40 gardening book
41 and 42 McDonald's Happy Meal toys

So 42 things today plus the 6 I counted from yesterday = 48 total
Rock on!!

Yes, books are one of the hardest things to get rid of for me. It took me years to start getting rid of books.
I woke up today thinking "Oh man! How am I gonna do this for 30 days?" But it's turning out to be really easy and satisfying!
Thanks Mommaof3boz for the New Years Wish!!

I'm in! This is good timing for me. We are planning to put our house on the market in February, so I need to be doing de-cluttering!

My biggest problem is that I feel wasteful to just throw things away, but in reality I know probably no one wants my half-burned candles! I tend to keep things because if it isn't something that is donatable, I just keep it in case I may need it later. I sew, and fabric scraps tend to take over my sewing space.

Not much time to update today, but did manage:

5 bottles essential oil
2 keys to nothing
2 pieces of fabric
handful of cds
cd holder

so I'll say seven items. That brings me to 100/150
