I like that rather than forcing a bunch of new habits, you go through and figure out what your family's habits are regarding why your house is in the state it is in and make changes to the house so that you don't have to really change your habits. For example, one change I've made: shoes are kicked off as soon as we enter the house and no one ever put them on the shoe shelf or took them to their room. They are just kicked around willy nilly. I've put a basket by the door (old laundry basket--will replace with a cute wicker basket when I get the money). Viola! Now shoes go into the basket. True we have to dig through to get matching pairs, but at least we know where they are. No more hunting through the house to find shoes.
The hardest part is pre-step one: where you just let the house go, if it isn't messy when you start, so that you can see what the messy habits are. Drives most people insane and invariably, your MIL will plan to visit while you are doing that.
