MrsH's Avatar MrsH 10:44 AM 11-29-2010

This is starting to get harder, and I'm not even 1/3 of the way there!

I did just get rid of another book but am starting to run low on ideas.  Maybe I need to go back and itemize each of the previous things.  Instead of one bag of clothes I should say it was 40 baby shirts, socks, and pants!

118 to go.

diana_of_the_dunes's Avatar diana_of_the_dunes 08:11 AM 11-30-2010

My problem right now is keeping new stuff from coming into the house, especially with the holidays.  Between DH's birthday, my birthday, and Christmas, I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.  Although I suppose the new stuff isn't clutter.  Yet.  Plus, we're both trying to get rid of old clothing and shoes that we never wear.

Another issue is my food storage.  It's definitely not clutter, but it does take up lots of space.  As a result, there are also things that I use once or twice a year that are hogging shelf space (food mill, apple peeler/corer/slicer, jars, jars, and more jars).  I DH is supposed to build me some 7' storage with LOTS of shelves...  But it hasn't happened yet, so everything is crammed onto those Sterilite shelves.  It's all stacked and looks kind of horrible.

Also, I de-itemized some of my groups of stuff.  I was starting to get discouraged, and I figured I deserve some credit for getting rid of large batches of things!

1. dish drainer (does it count if I replaced it with a new, folding one so doesn't take up any space in the cupboard?)

2. 1 book

3. small pile of paperwork/old bills

4. box of glass votive candle holders

18. small box of baby accessories to sell

OOh.  This looks like fun.  This should help motivate me to keep decluttering.  Be back later.    Let's see.  I have 10 rooms.

Kitchen, back hall, bathroom, dining room, living room, bedroom, playroom, DS Bedroom, upstairs bathroom, basement (storage)

I think I will set a quota for each room.  I can pull 15 things out of each room easy.  I think I will start in the kitchen.

Oh great I miscounted earlier, so 115 to go, except I just got rid of:

12 pairs of shoes (to SIL for her kids - does it matter that I got 6 pairs from her just today, in sizes that will fit my kids next?)

2 pairs of shoes and a pair of snowboots to donate

yet another holey sock

3 winter jackets (to SIL)

"store" playset consisting of empty pantry boxes and cans. Recycled.

That puts me at 96 to go, over 1/3 of the way there!!

To Do items include:

  • large bag of clothes to take to consignment
  • pile of baby stuff to send to a friend of mine who needs it for when her new baby arrives
  • a wobble horse to either repair and use, or donate back to our citywide swap
  • hangers
  • using candles that have sat unused for 5+ years (I'm donating them if not used before that time)
  • using a lotion and a foot scrub that I haven't used in 6+ months (or else trashing)
  • my eldest daughter's stuff that she keeps not putting away
  • my middle one's size 4 clothes need to all come out of his drawers
  • patch two pairs of pants that have sat unworn for months and months
