We are a family of four plus a cat. In the past year we've gone from a 3 bedroom, 2100 sq foot house with a yard to a roughly 300 square foot suite in my mother's house. It includes two smaller bed rooms, a hall area, and a half bathroom. We use my mom's laundry room and kitchen in other parts of the house, but those are definitely her spaces and not ours. We left all our stuff in the house until we managed to sell it (it's still on sale; no buyers). We went to the thrift store and got some stuff for the kids, some books from the library, our computers, and about a dozen outfits for each kid and half a dozen for us - and that's about it. (My mom still has stuff in the closets here so we don't even have closet space.) I miss having autonomy and a few choice things (specific books, and my kitchen stuff, and photo albums) but right now I can't even imagine what it will be like to have a house again (assuming our old house does sell, eventually. It's been like six months so far.)

Has anyone gone from a really small space to a larger space and maintained their sanity? If we had a full bathroom and kitchen this would be the perfect sized house for me but it seems ridiculous to say so, having less than 100 sq feet per person.

I think the co-housings is the key. Don't know how I woul do.

I've bounced around. Mostly tiny apartments. 3 in a 1br or 4 people in a 2br. With short stay in very large houses.

I feel better in small spaces, husband prefers large

mom to 14yr dd and 4yr dd
