A while ago we found out we'll have to move 6 weeks earlier than planned. There went my leisurely selling things hoping to reduce the amount we have to move this time around.

I did start preparing for this move back at the beginning of 2012, by participating in the '2012 in 2012' challenge from the sidelines. I was recording my progress on my blog, so I don't think I have posted much in the thread here. But I was reading it for inspiration and I have to say that 2012 was a successful year for reducing our clutter. I have managed to get rid of 3445 items and recuperated $2201 in the process. I have continued to work on the same goal in 2013, so far I have 984 less items and $1316 more to spend on groceries.

I have to say that being so intent on getting rid of things, has really helped with what I decide to bring into the house now. I found myself really considering if an item is worth it, not only price-wise, but the space it will take, the added upkeep and stress of owning it. Needless to say, very few non-consumables have made it into our home in the last 18 months.

I thought it would be nice to have a place here to record whatever daily tasks we accomplish for those of us planning on a move in the future. Our move is in four weeks and today I packed one box: items from the cabinet above the toilet in the master bath. I have thrown out 11 items in the process and pulled quite a few out for donations. I will have to deal with those later as today is my youngest's graduation and won't be home for most of the day. In fact I should really go get ready now. :)

So what have you been doing?

Thanks! Good luck to you too, settling in the new place!
And now that you've moved, what would you have done differently? ;-)

Okay I will tell you about my move. It was my best move ever!!

As soon as I found out I was moving I started packing away things I knew I wanted in the new house that we didn't use regularly. As I did that I gave away and threw away TONS of stuff. I kept give away boxes at the front door and dropped them off regularly. I also gifted things to people I knew would appreciate them. Packed boxes went in a pile in the garage. All boxes were for one room only.. so I had our name, the room they went to (circled) and an inventory of what was in the box.

I had a special shelf for things that were missing parts. So if I found the lid to a toy teapot it went there. As there were fewer and fewer things in the house many things got matched up. Odd gloves for returned to their owners too! That way at the end odd things without the other parts just got tossed. It meant everything going to the new house was whole!

So the house got emptier and emptier. But it was fine because the things we used everyday were still there. So when the final pack happened it was about 5 more boxes. Those boxes got marked specially and emptied first because I had already tested those items as the most important for daily living.

I was lucky in that we had a 2 week overlap of houses before we moved in. And our old house was being sold mostly furnished (normal here for cottages). So I had new beds delivered and had them made up. Each time I visited I brought a little more of home for the kids (toys etc).

On move in day we unpacked the critical boxes and it felt like home already!

I haven't missed anything I gave away or tossed.

To add to the complexity of the move my husband and I had just separated. So things had to be divided. So another chance to declutter! He is feeling he got more than his fair share I think because I was very generous with sending things with him. But for me it was a fabulous chance to clear house literally.

My new place seems so streamlined and wonderful. I am so happy here!!

Wow, how wonderful that you could be so organized and have such a smooth transition! And I have to say I am impressed with you having just 5 boxes of things you use daily. I feel like I can't pack much because what if we need it in the next month? So everything I have packed gets labeled and goes on a master list with the exact contents. So far I have probably accessed about 1/3 of the boxes, either to retrieve something I needed or to pack something else I found that belonged with the stuff in a particular box.

What a great idea of having a designated place to put things missing parts! My strategy in previous moves was just pile them random places in the house and change the location if they got in the way at some point, until the missing things showed up. Not quite as efficient. ;)

My situation is a bit complex as well. My husband and oldest daughter have already moved with about a third of the stuff, but I was waiting for my youngest to finish school before our move. The house where we move already looks full and cluttered to me and we will have to bring so much more in. :( Then, I have about four weeks to unpack what I want to keep there and re-pack things for my daughters who will be moving to Seattle for University. I feel stressed just thinking about it. bigeyes.gif

Today I

  • made reservations for the moving truck,
  • packed one more box from the master bathroom,
  • arranged for the things I pulled out to donate, to be picked up by someone who needs them (Friday),
  • listed more stuff up for sale.

Not a lot of progress, but ran out of time. I need longer days!

This is a great thread:)

I am actually moving on Tuesday! I did not have as much time as I would have liked to prepare for this move, it kind of came up suddenly.... So I packed about 80% of my belongings into boxes whenever I could and we have been living with just the 20% of our stuff, I kind of love it! My kids have 2 little boxes of toys, In the kitchen I have like 4 mugs, 4 plates, 4 glasses etc. It makes clean up really quick, I love it! Since I didn't have time to slowly pack and declutter,  I plan on doing things a little backwards. When I unpack our apartment ( I have like 2 days to unpack)  I plan to having 2 boxes by the door, one for trash, second for donations... and so I plan to declutter as I unpack...Yes, yes, I know it is kind of backwards... but I have to move again in 6 months (this move is temporary) and I really have a goal of getting rid of 1/3 of our current boxes....  My problem is that we used to rent a house (there is 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 kids) and now we are squashed in a 2 bedroom apartment half the size of the previous space)... so anyway... I plan to declutter as I unpack next week!

So we are moving on Tuesday. I am packed like 90% right now.... I will close all the rest of the boxes on Monday. Today for the upcoming move, I have to call power company and have electricity turned on at the new apartment. Also have to call to get washer and dryer rented out. I have to start changing addresses on all my documents etc. I already did that at the post office. Now have to call the individual places (like credit cards etc). I also have a job interview today and tomorrow (the jobs are 2 hours away so most of my days today and tomorrow will be taken up by driving to and from). Anyway, I am kind of excited about decluttering when I unpack! When I saw the amount of stuff in boxes, I was like, must get rid of 30% of all this!!!!!! since I have to do it all again in 6 months.....

again, this is a great thread!!!!

Good luck on your job interviews! And on your last leg of this move! :-) Sounds like you have a great plan decluttering as you unpack since there was no time to do it before. Now you have 6 months to get ready for the next move. I hope you'll post here from time to time as you do the unpacking and also to say how your move went. I'll be thinking of you on Tuesday. hug2.gif

Today I:

  • felt super overwhelmed about this move, for some reason. I feel like I just can't completely finish any of the packing I start and it drives me nuts. I either can't find the perfect size box for what I want to pack at the time, or something else needs to be retrieved from some other place to go in whatever box I work with, or there are all these random things at the end I don't know where they should be packed.
  • after I made myself get over feeling bogged down I have sorted through the drawers on my side table and pulled out what I don't want anymore. I got boxes to fit them, labeled them and left them in my bedroom ready for the drawers to be dropped in on the night before the move.
  • I have pulled some toys off some shelves and offered them to people who wanted them. Hopefully they will all be picked up tomorrow.
  • I have labeled a few boxes I have previously packed and wrote their contents on the master list
  • did a bit of sewing on a project that needs to be finished before I can pack away the sewing machine (which has taken over my dining room table for now)
  • cleaned the fridge

My to do list doesn't seem to get any smaller though irked.gif

Today I have spent some time weeding the yard. My fingers hurt but I would need to spend at least another couple of hours before it is all done. The landlord told us to have it done before we move out. I hope I didn't start it too early and have new weeds grow before our moving date.

I have put a few things in the trash and pulled a bunch of stuff off the shelves that can be packed. Hopefully I will get to them tomorrow. I really should try to list some more things for sale but I am kind of burned out on that. irked.gif

Even if new weeds grow you would have had to weed these. Fingers crossed though you don't have to weed again.

How is the packing going?

I guess I could look at it this way, but these are weeds growing between pavers, so now there will be room for new ones to grow and if they do they will be tiny = really painful to pull them out. Fingers crossed I won't have to deal with that.

Yesterday I brought in from the garage all the empty boxes I have saved from my kitchen stuff. I have dusted them and I am ready to start packing part of the kitchen tonight.

I still have to go out to weed for a while (can only do it a bit a time, my fingers really hurt after a while) and shuffle some more stuff in the garage. I need to pull out a couple of file cabinets from under and give them away. And also try to get rid of a lot of the stuff in there. If I can accomplish all that today I will be very happy.

Tomorrow I have an appointment to see if this cycle is a go for a natural IVF. It's my very last chance since we will be moving next month. I am so nervous!

The weeding is done! So excited!!! biggrinbounce.gif

Today

  • I gave away two metal file cabinets,
  • I have sold some more scrapbooking stuff and
  • Completed the change of address for the USPS.

Now I need to catch up on home maintenance which was put on the back burner while I was working on the weeding and the garage sorting. I've got dishes and laundry to do, bills to pay, tidying up, etc.

You can pour boiling water on tiny weeds between paving stones to kill them.

I am happy for you and wish I would feel the same way once I move!

I got rid of so much stuff but I still have quite a lot. And I was feeling good about the progress I've made, until I had to work in the garage and was faced with the real amount of stuff in there. Now I don't have time to deal with it and it will have to come with us. So, once we move. I will still have a lot of decluttering left to do.

It's great that you are excited about the move! It helps a lot to look forward to it. I, on the other hand, am kind of sad having to leave this city and moving into an older home where I would have to start all over with scrubbing from top to bottom to bring it to my OCD standard of clean. winky.gif

Yesterday I have started m three week countdown to the move. So much still left to do! My plan for today is to finish packing the living room. I hope I will be able to do it, I am not feeling especially motivated this morning. eyesroll.gif

Today I:

  • Sold two small display cabinets
  • Worked in the garage for a while and put about a dozen things in the garbage and another dozen in the donation pile
  • Listed more stuff up for sale
  • Packed the living room (what I couldn't pack yet I just moved into the dining room, so the room is empty for my daughter and her friends who will be spending the night here Wednesday)
  • Tried to burn some papers I set aside to destroy (sensitive info), but I was making too much smoke and had to stop after a handful. Now I have no idea how to properly dispose of the big box-full (no shredder) confused.gif
  • Kinda related to the move: got scheduled for the IVF retrieval on Wednesday morning; just gave myself the trigger shot. So excited! joy.gif

Lots of progress today. I have packed more things from the garage, threw away 20 items and added 31 others to the donation pile.

Finally started packing some of things from the kitchen.

Listed more stuff up for sale and sold a few things.

I also realized that very likely our stuff will not all fit in the truck. greensad.gif

Good thread!!

We move saturday.  We have had a nice 2 week overlap which has been great, however I have been in my current house 12 years, now have 4 kids, my XDH left a lot of things and my DH is working out of town so he has been very little help. I have moved a lot already and lots is packed- probably 80%.

A lot of big things have to be moved-  I have movers for that and I am going from 1800 to 3800 sq ft. so that's née.

But I am just burned out right now.   am so tired of packing and living out of boxes.  I have given away and donated a TON but there still seems to always be more!!!

We move in 6 weeks. I've got the whole bathroom packed up except for daily essentials. The kitchen is the same. All the dishes are packed except two big plates, two bowls, and four small plates. It's been awesome because dishwashing has never been easier! Listing our home on Monday so the house is staged to sell. No pictures or personal items. It's all packed up. Have to do the office today and a bookshelf. Renting two uhaul moving pods. First one will be delivered this week so we can pack all our boxes and extra furniture so the garage is clean for showings. The second uhaul moving pod will come a couple days before we move to pack the rest of the house. We're selling some large item furniture and appliances after we sell the house so we don't have to move them. We have nicer furniture still left in storage from my DH that we'll be using instead. My almost five year old has been awesome about all of this! I have all his toys packed except a few big trucks and a large box of small cars/trucks, blocks, and legos. Mostly, he likes making houses out of all the moving boxes! We have another baby coming in December. So I do almost all the packing and DH lugs everything down to the garage. I've donated so many boxes of clothes and baby stuff and toys and kitchenware. We're moving from a house to a condo until we can find the right home to buy so this gives me incentive to live the minimalist lifestyle. One set of dishes not three. 2 glass pie dishes not six. One set of corning ware. One baking dish instead of four. I'm determined to only move items we will actually use in the future and to let go of the "I'll use this someday, I'll wear this someday..." idea. It's easier to do this knowing I won't have much closest space or kitchen space in the condo. We have large storage in finished basement of the condo but it freaks me out to have boxes and boxes of "stuff" down there waiting for me to find a place for them. I've done enough moves to know that all that "stuff" stays there until the next move.

So, the closing date on our house keeps getting changed! First it was the last of July, then the 19th, and now the bank says it "could be as early as the 12th." jaw.gif Which is, you know, THIS WEEKEND. Needless to say, I'm freaking out. We technically have our condo until the end of July, but because I run a home daycare we can't really be in that state of flux and living out of boxes in two different places for so long. So, I'm running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get everything ready. I think today I'll try to finish the basement completely and get it move-ready. I need to do several big Goodwill runs to get rid of stuff, and consolidate Christmas stuff in to the tubs I have.

mlins3109, I totally hear you about the "stuff." I'm trying to be absolutely ruthless when it comes to getting rid of stuff. It's hard!

But I am just burned out right now.   am so tired of packing and living out of boxes.  I have given away and donated a TON but there still seems to always be more!!!

How did your move go augustgirl? I can totally understand the burned out feeling! So tired of being at this packing business for so long and feeling like I'm still drowning in stuff no matter how much we seem to get rid of.

I have also been doing this on my own as my husband moved ahead for his job and I stayed behind for the girls to finish school. This is our third major move and each time my husband would move whenever he got the job while I would wait till the summer. I don't think he has any idea how much energy goes into a big move like this.

Wow, it's great that you are doing so much this early. I wish I still felt that spark of excitement to push me to do more. At this point I'm just so done with this, can't wait until it's all over. And I am so not looking forward to the unpacking either! I have not even started on the kitchen yet and now I don't feel like making the decision of what I could get rid of. So, everything will get packed and I will just have to deal with it at the other end, sadly.

Holy cow, I would be totally freaking out as well!  I had a mini freak out when we were told we will have four weeks instead of the 10 I was counting on to move out. ROTFLMAO.gif

I hope everything will work out smoothly for you!

I have been super busy for the last few days. Wednesday I had my egg retrieval in the morning (2 beautiful eggs joy.gif), so I haven't really done much physical work for the rest of the day, but I have listed the last lot of things to sell and called the utilities to cancel service. Thursday, Friday and Saturday I have scrubbed as much as I could in the house, using cleaning products because I don't want to use any of them after my transfer on Monday. Today I have even arranged to give them all away. I have also packed A LOT, but never made it to the kitchen greensad.gif

Everything is almost completely done except for the kitchen, my desk area (part of the kitchen) and my daughter's bedroom.

I am really stressing that our stuff won't fit into the moving truck, after all.

I am waiting to find out if we will be taking the washer&dryer with us or will I have to try and sell them here. I also have to sell the fridge, I just have to figure out when, so we still have a place to keep food but don't wait so long that we won't find a buyer when we need it.

We just decided last night to do a moving truck instead of the pods. It will save us over $1700 for a Budget truck! I'm in the same boat about the washer/dryer thing. Originally we weren't going to take them since it would take up so much space in one pod and those things are expensive. But now that we have the space in a moving truck we just might. Thing is the washer/dryer is about 25 years old (still works) and really a pain to move. The condo we're moving into has lots of stairs. And I'm not sure how well the set will take another move. I got these from my parents 10 years ago. The set has moved at least 6 times!

Will be watching this thread over the next little while with great interest! We've just decided on a cross-country move within the next year, DH is beginning to apply for jobs and it all depends on when he is hired. I am a teacher, so will likely wait to move until the school year is done even if DH goes earlier. There are some awesome ideas in this thread! I have totally changed my tune on buying things, and everything we buy we think is this coming with us? If not, why are we buying it? I think I will have a really hard time with the kids toys...my DS is just one, so we haven't gotten rid of any toys yet...it will be tough I'm sure because it seems like whenever I want to get rid of anything my DD (3) immediately loves it and it is her absolute favourite lol! How are you all handling things with kids toys? Since it is a cross country move we will have to really let a lot go. It will make for an interesting next year!
