In the study. It's not ideal but it's the only place I can keep both sewing and children safe.
Pros:
- I can shut the door
- I can leave things set up
- it's where we keep the iron/ironing board anyway
- light is fair to good depending on time of day
- it's far enough from the bedrooms that I don't disturb anyone sleeping but close enough to where the baby sleeps that I can hear her
Cons:
- very small and a shared space so either I pack away or no-one else can use the room
- no work surface so I have to cut out on the floor
- limited storage so most of my stuff is in the shed
I don't use a machine, so I take my sewing wherever in the house When I did use a machine I would set it up at the kitchen table and just put it away when I was finished. This is what my mom always did when I was growing up so I think I just picked that up from her. But I do prefer hand sewing these days so I just take my basket with me from room to room.
I don't have a sewing machine but I have a specific area in our room that I can do some stuff like sewing, crocheting and cross stitching. I have a table with drawers and all of my stuffs are there. I love making our pillowcases and embroidered our names on it.
I have a small sewing table in my husband's office so I can leave my machines out all the time. It would be a lot harder to get through things if I had to pull out my machines every single time. I like that I can shut the door, or even pop the baby gate in and leave the door open so I can hear/see the kids better. Sharing the space is hard sometimes, it's a small room, and dh works at home full time, so sometimes I feel like I'd be distracting him if I went in to sew. Also, it's too small to do any cutting or pressing, or store my fabric, so that all takes place elsewhere in the house.
I have a "sewing room" that also has some storage and laundry drying racks. It's a pretty nice room. I don't have a chair so I stand at the machine or sit on the chests for quick repairs. If I sewed more often I would have to relocate some of this storage and get a work table. Fortunately it has good light and I can leave projects out without them being in the way.
Hand sewing/mending I usually do in a comfortable chair somewhere.
