Back during the summer we had some decluttering challenges where we tried to get rid of a certain number of unwanted/unused items by a certain date - items counted if you gave them away, recycled them, or gave them back to their rightful owner. We listed in the thread what we got rid of and kept a running tally. Those threads really motivated me and I need another one. Desparately!!

I want to get rid of 150 items of clutter by Thanksgiving. Anybody want to join me?

I'm in. I need some inspiration to keep going and these challenges have helped.

Does it still count if all 150 things belong to dh? I am SO tempted....

Just what I need!! (Does a piece of paper count??? or a pile??) 1/2 joking here.....but I have always wondered that--in some web groups they say to throw away 20 things, and I think.....does a popsicle stick count??? empty envelope?? ...NOT that I am looking for junk--I have plenty!!!!! (but easier to toss real garbage than say a cooking magazine from last year or a vase that I might want someday....for something......

I'm counting non-paper items. Otherwise it'd be 1000 items for me.

Me too! My goal is 1500 by Thanksgiving.

It helps that not so d h has finally moved out. His stuff is still here, but that's about to change. One way or the other.

Well I won't be counting individual pieces of paper (I would be up to 150 in no time!) but I will count magazines.

I think I need a whole separate decluttering thread for piles of paper :

I'm working on decluttering right now. I filled 2 trash bags full of clothes to take to the urban mission and working on filling at least another one today. I also need to whittle (sp?) down my books and magazines

we're in! dh suggested 300 be our goal...i am thinking 150, but if i can count the last few weeks of trips to the salvation army, 300 does not seem that bad!! seems nesting has started much earlier this time!!!!

We're trying to get some bookcases cleaned out and MOVED before DD starts crawling. She's now doing the bellyflop/worm move to get around, so we need to act fast!

I'll go with 150 also. My goal is to Freecycle most of the items as well.

Well, I started yesterday. I have 2 boxes full of clothes to take to GW. We took 3 loads of trash to the dump. I feel so excited. I only got 1/2 of the garage done, since I went ahead and started by myself. The lady is coming on thursday. I'm very excited. It's very liberating!!!

I also want to have less stuff before winter sets in. This past week I have removed one shopper of stuff from the house each day. I'm hoping to keep that up for at least another 2 weeks and see where it gets to!

I'm focussing on clothes, books videos and what we call 'tat'!

Paper stuff is another story - we have a kerbside recycling scheme here and we fill a larger than archive size box every week! We had to ask for another box for all the other tins and bottles!

Good luck to everyone and here's to a neater winter!

Oh, man. 150 items?!? I'll give it the old college try. My closets are bursting, even with the purging I did this spring! I've got several things in mind to go to freecycle.

I'll give it a try--we're expecting a new baby in Feb and we're not moving, so there's no better time than now.

My shelves are bursting, but I have such a hard time giving away books--especially ones I can see kids reading in 10 years--I don't know how I'll get over that.
I even have musty, ancient encyclopedias from my childhood!

150, huh.

We have a hard time getting rid of books here too, although DH has agreed to part with all of his Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton books that he has already read and get them from the library in the future if he wants to read them again. I'm trying to get to the point where we are only keeping books we use for reference all the time, quality children's books that will be read and reread, books I know I will use for homeschooling, and books we want to read but can't get at the library or through ILL. I'm even going to part with my Star Trek novels from my childhood (I was a major Star Trek fan) because I know I won't read them again and they are just sitting in a box in the basement.

Okay, I'm going to really start today when the boys go down for their naps. I'm going to count some diapers and covers I have sold since the beginning of October as well.

So, 12 diapers and covers sold on the TP - either already sent out or waiting to be taken to the post iffice.

Plus an artificial Christmas tree I gave away on freecycle.

Total so far:13. I sure have a long way to go

OK, here's my tally so far:

11 items to Freecyclers
1 large stack of holiday catalogs recycled (ugh! It's not even Halloween yet!!)
3 sweaters donated to various people/places

This weekend:
1 headboard going to sister

Plus I plan to Freecycle a bunch more stuff this weekend.

A slow start, but it feels great to get things goin' on out the door!!

Let's see, I put a bunch of baby shower decorations for a freecycler, I'm going to count that as 3. I put a book in the thrift store pile. And 5 sweaters to a freecycler.

I'm regifting some unopened Ventaire bottles to friend at her shower next week.

Cleaned out a box of yarn that had a bunch of cardboard in it. Why is that in there?

Plus, I started my box of stuff to sell (yarn, purse handles, other crafty stuff), but I'm going to wait until they are actually up for sale or sold to count them.

So, running total: 11.
