I would let them pick out a few favorites, and then go with what has extreme sentimental value- from someone who passed away, the one they got at birth etc etc. If your kids don't play with it and you don't know where you got it give it away (though I've found stuffed animals are difficult ot even give away! I tried freecycling some and noone ever wanted them so I finally gave them to the resale shop)

First I start by taking pictures of my stuffed animals.
That way they go in the book so the kids always have a picture of it.
Then we purge.

Even if someone special gave it to them well the picture is a memory
Unless its 'really special' like a friend that passed etc. Then they can keep it and if they are too old for it it goes into their box for memories.

But the picture book is a great idea and works well for those bulky yet sentimental stuff you don't want to part with forever but don't need to keep around.

8 might be enough

Love the idea of taking photos of each one. THanks for the inspiration.

Last spring I gave away 50% of my DS's stuffed animals. It was a huge box full of them. He never noticed that they were gone, but he did notice that it became much easier to find his favorites in the smaller mountain of animals!
