I finally found a way to keep up with housework. Finally! Of course, I didn't come up with it on my own, it is from the Messies Anonymous books by Sandra Felton and its called the Super Flipper System.

My biggest issue with keeping up with my house was never knowing what to do on a given day. There were always a million things I could work on, and that was overwhelming, so I did nothing! : The cool thing about the Flipper book is that I already decided what I would do on what day. Because when it comes right down to it, it doesn't really matter if I clean the toilet on Friday or Tuesday. Or if I vacuum the Living Room on Monday or Wednesday.

anyway, I am ahead of myself. Here is what I did (remember, I was following the instructional kit that I borrowed):

1. I made a big long list of all the jobs I should be doing, in each room around the house, on a regular basis. Even if I only really needed to do it once a month, or even only once every other month, I put it on the list. Then, I went through and decided how often I needed to do it. The book has a nice chart to help figure that out:

2W = Twice Weekly (104 times per year)
W = Weekly (52 times per year)
E4W = Every four weeks (13 times per year)
E8W = Every eight weeks (6 times per year)
S = Seasonally (4 times per year)
Y = Yearly (1 time a year)

2. Okay, so I had my list. Now I needed to assign jobs to days. So, I made a chart with 4 columns (First Week, Second Week, Third Week, Fourth Week) and 7 lines (sunday, monday, tuesday, etc.). I decided which days would be Heavy, Moderate and Light based on my general schedule and then started filling in the chart. This part took the longest, i think.

Okay, so, for example, I decided that I really want to be changing our sheets once every week. So, I wrote "Change Sheets" in every Thursday square. But, I only feel the need to clean the bathroom mirror once a month, so I picked one square (Tuesday of the Second week) and wrote it in. It took some tweeking and I made some adjustments as I went but finally I had every thing assigned to a day and a frequency that seemed like it would work for us and our home.

I also had made a specific list of jobs I would ideally do every day. For me, that list has 7 items on it.

3. Okay, so if I had actually bought the system, i would have one of those Flip up photo albums. But I didn't order and I couldn't find a flip album IRL and the only ones I found online were fromstores where the shipping cost as much as the book! And I wasn't willing to pay it. So....I made my own "book"

On my computer, I made cards for each day of the 4 weeks. Here are a couple of examples of what my cards look like:

1st Week - DAILY

Devotional/Prayer Time

Okay, so those are what the first 2 have on them. the daily card has 7 lines to indicate each day. The Monday card (the (M) means it is a moderate day) has two lines. The two lines are because I will use this book in an 8 week cycle. So, I know that I should do those jobs each pass through the book. There are a couple of jobs that only have one line and then I don't have to do it both times through. If I do it the first time and put an X, then I can skip it next time through. If it doesn't have an X, then I should do it. Make sense? Of course, because I made my own, I will have to erase my marks on the daily page each time through, but that's alright.

4. I printed these cards out on white cardstock, cut them apart (they are approx. 4x5) and then covered them with contact paper. I punched two holes in the top of each card and put them on rings so I can "flip" it to the week and day I am on. I mark off the jobs with a wet-erase marker.

5. What I like so much about this, is that I made it. So it is persnoalized and I am only accountable to myself. So, it keeps me on track and helps me know what job I should do on a given day, but if I miss it or I don't get a card done, its no big deal. If I feel the need to go back, I can. But I don't have to. I don't think of it as a list that is dictating to me what I have to do, it simply serves as a reminder. And the marks I make, while I admit that it is satisfying to see the tasks I have accomplished, I also use them as a reminder of what I got done. So, I know when the last time I did a job was and it helps me decide if it really needs to be done or not.

Okay, this post is huge, and I have no idea if anyone will even read it! : but I am just hoping it could be helpful to someone else. I really enjoy having this tool! If any does read and needs clarification on anything, just ask. I'll answer what I can!

Neat! I just did something similar. I have a plain paper calender and I made a list of things that need doing regularly and how often then I put it on the calender. Tuesday is sheets day at our house too.

I worked it out so that everyday I only have one chore+dishes & laundry. It's not overwhelming at all.

It is good to find something the works! My hope by posting it is to either share this specific system with someone whom it will work for OR just encourage people to keep looking and trying things until they find something (Or a mix of somethings ) that works for you!

I'm always overwhelmed by the number of things that need to get done, so I end up starting five or so different projects, never fully completing anything! ahh.. maybe I should try to make a schedule

Whoops...I fixed the link. I have posted this before at a small private board I visit and I didn't realize the site has been revamped since I first composed that post.

i really do hope you find something that helps take the pressure off.

I couldn't find the specific book on Amazon, it looks great, I have a gc for amazon and would love to get this book, it sounds like just what I need!

I'm sorry I missed this post! If its not too late, I would recommend getting The New Messies Manual . It has a much smaller description of this system, but is a GREAT companion to it and coupled with my more in depth explanation here, i think you'd be in really good shape.

I started this same system! Made up the cards and stuck 'em in a drawer. This was about a year ago. Just dug them out and am ready to begin! LOL

I came up with something similar for myself a while back where I created daily lists Mon, Tue, Wed, etc but I think I was too ambitious with what I wanted to get done because I only managed to follow through for a week or so.

My downfall is when I start making a list like that I tell myself oh I should do X once a week when in actuality at the moment it gets done um NEVER so maybe seasonally would be okay? :LOL Maybe I'll try again but before determining the frequency for each task, I'll start by writing down how often it currently gets done...
