So, I have an infant seat and base sitting in my living room that is too old to pass along, consign, etc. I hate the idea of it going into a landfill, and am not having much luck with local recycling companies/organizations. Anybody got any ideas?

Give it to a daycare if it can't be used as they often use them for seats..

8 might be enough

My understanding is that they should really be destoyed. Cut the straps. Go to town on it with a sledge hammer. It needs to be clearly unusable.

sorry!

Check with your local recycling program, but I bet if you're in the US, your local program won't take car seats. The recycling center in our town in Germany did recycle car seats. When you dispose of the seat (recycling or otherwise), be sure remove the straps, cover, etc (anything that will come off) and dispose of those separately. Then, either take a sledge hammer to the shell or write on it with permanent marker something like, "Broken! Do not use!" or some other dire warning. You'd be amazed at the lengths people will go through to use an old seat (like using bungie cords for straps!). If you put it out with your trash, try to disguise it, as well by putting it in a black plastic bag with other stuff.

Really if it's expired it should be destroyed.

Would your children be interested in using it for play with the baby dolls? When we have had old car seats (not expired) sitting around the house waiting to pass them on to friends, my DC have had so much fun playing with them.
