In our newspaper today there is a story about a woman who died in a house fire. Firemen determined the blaze spread because there was so much junk & clutter inside to feed the flames. From where her body was found, they think she couldn't get through the piles of junk to escape. If you ever wondered if purging & clearing out junk is really important, keep this in mind.

I saw this article on the Children of Hoarders site. There it is - in print - our greatest fear for our hoarding parents. Very powerful and frightening.

Gosh, that's extreme.

However, not to be contrary on purpose or anything, but - one of my phiolosophies about the clutter (such as toys left on the floor) is that there'd be a heck of a lot of ruckus if an intruder broke into our house in the middle of the night and it would act as a combo deterrent slash alarm.

Sometimes I even deliberately kick a toy or two right into the path of the door before turning in for the night.

That is so sad, and I have heard a few stories similar to that one over the years.

Now that's the exact opposite of what I do. I HAVE to clear the hallways and doorways before I go to bed at night, in case of a fire. It's pretty much the one thing that motivates me to actually pick up our junk before bed.

My grandmother's home caught on fire in 1991 because of her hording. (A 25+ year old can of sterno burst and caught on fire from the heater) she is lucky she made it out alive. When they were cleaning out her home they found newspapers & mags from the 60's & 70's.

Sadly, even this didn't stop her, her home is as bad as ever.

Dawn, mama to D (3.06) & N (9.07) C (11.09) & Still-in-shock surprise due in Aug!

Wow that sucks

I read a similar story that happened around here. An older woman's house burnt down and she died as well. It took forever to burn and find the woman's body because she horded books- boxes and boxes of hard cover books plus mags etc. IT was like logs burning and the firemen could not get thru it so let it burn.

My husband works in fire protection, I once read an article in one of the professional journals about what a big problem this is...Why do people need so much stuff, I notced that the worst hoarders usu. live alone.
