My dad would do this and at first I thought he was fool of crap, and then one day my stuff was literally in the trash. Taught me a good lesson about taking care of my things better.

Just found this thread, suddenly thinking my house is not as bad as I previously thought My kids room looks like that though, takes them about 15 minutes to have it looking like that and I seem to spend all day in there trying to get them to tidy it up! I feel stressed out just looking at those before pics though.

Congrats on the amazing job you have done so far on the tidying. The place looks SOOOO much better! Rest up while you are sick and get better then you can worry about getting back to the tidying up You are one brave person to share those photo's! I don't even like people standing at my front door when my house isn't clean-lol.

Heres some recent pix-

remember my scary stairwell?
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...e/DSC02620.jpg

This is today:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...e/DSC02739.jpg

Remember my yucky bedroom?
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...e/DSC02619.jpg
Here it is now:
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...e/DSC02743.jpg

(excuse the big cardboard play house- we were having a play day and I kinda set up our room as another playspace)

So- I'm getting there- my laundry room is WORSE now- but everything in general is getting under control. DH and I started a blog about simplifying- I plan to keep my messy house as a common theme and will post pictures of my random messy disasters there in the future! If you are nosey- this blog is for you!

What a great job!

In the bedroom - have that chair, only mine is currently covered in crap. :

The OP started the thread to "embarrass" herself and get her going on her decluttering mission. Its not about anyone else or their guilt.

Even if it was to embarrass herself, I think the posting of the photos itself was intended to cause the embarrassment--I don't think she was looking for a tongue-lashing for motivation. I was thinking about starting a thread here for those of us with messes that are beyond just simple clutter, who have psychological attachments to their things for various reasons, but the thought of others making comments like that made me think better of that idea.

Hey, I wasn't trying to guilt anyone Gendenwitha. I simply grew up with messy, packratty folks. It was terrible to feel ashamed of my home and that I couldn't have anyone over because everyone's home was so much nicer than mine. I don't mean "nicer" in terms what we owned either.

For my own kids, I keep things neat and tidy. Not sparkly, not fancy and not "eat off the floor" clean, but nice. Able to invite anyone through the door at a moment's notice. Able to have playdates and friends over without any embarrassment or shame. It doesn't take all my time, the kids and dh help and we are happy.

I feel that this post was written in love and encouragement, not to make anyone feel badly. It's too bad Gendenwitha took it that way. Sometimes hearing things we don't want to hear is the only thing that can help us to make serious changes in our lives. I certainly needed to hear that, if not anyone else. Thank you philomom!

CDMAZE: just checked out your blog and your life looks fantastic! I so admire your aspirations for your family and life, as well as your goals of simplicity. You are an inspiration. Don't be too hard on yourself with your house....sounds like you're doing SO MUCH with the school, your dh being gone, kids, etc.!! I'm sure you feel so much better, having decluttered some, which will make all the other things you do so much easier!
