I want a list to inspire me as I declutter. For instance:

* Get rid of things that make you feel guilty when you see them.
* Get rid of all but two pot holders (you only have two hands after all!).

Inpire me mamas.

* Get rid of outdated reference materials (thanks, MIL, for the stack of "homeschool" science books written in the 50's!!!)

* Get rid of clothes you don't look good in.

* Get rid of clothes that don't fit right.

* Get rid of poorly written insanely annoying kids books.

Get rid of ANYTHING that does not bring you some joy when you see it or use it.
ANYTHING.

Even my orange juicer is joyful to look at...it is 1950's yellow and looks retro. Everything to me lately has to bring some level of joy or it GOES!

This is a GREAT thread!

Get rid of things you keep out of guilt or obligation

Get rid of all that makeup you really don't use that often!

Get rid of kitchen appliances you use less than, say, once a month

Get rid of broken things you've been intending to fix but really aren't ever going to

very good thread, yep

Get rid of gifts you don't like

Get rid of books you don't read all the time (what's a library for after all?)

Get rid of pictures and artwork you have no place to put - if you like it, then find a place for it - take something you like less down, but if it doesn't have a place what good is it?

Get rid of balloons that no longer stay afloat (as I look around me )

Anything in the kitchen cupboard (dishes, canned goods, utensils, you name it) that haven't been used in a year. (Other than the forspecial china and silver).
Ugly, stained, ill-fitting, maybe someday I'll wear it again, itchy clothes. (keep one set for painting and crud)
the pile of mismatched, wandering socks
the pile of repairs that have never been made
here's my favorite: get rid of anything that requires you to purchase some kind of organization item for it. chances are, you don't need that crap to begin with.
that bunch of random floating pens--give em to the grocery store clerk
all the extra markers and crayons. keep one set of new.
ditto the pp on the books that never get any action, unless they're antiques or something.
all the extra measuring spoons and cups (I had over 100 of these things before decluttering. seems I can't let go of things that have measuring lines on them)
All those knives that don't really do it. you only really need 2.
All those screws and nails that are leftover from everything. Can never find the one you want anyway.
anything that ends up covered in dust--if you really loved it that much, it would get more attention.
anything you can always find at goodwill for under a buck that you hardly ever use anyway.
the cookie cutters that are never used.
all but 25 favorite toys for each kid (sets count as one thing). This one is hard.
Stuffed animals. They are nasty and collect dust. Keep one or two special loves. but not 50.

Get rid of husband who will not get rid of anything. Just kidding!

Get rid of unflattrering clothing.
Get rid of extra furniture.
Get boxes loaded with books, DVD's, cd's and clothes OUT of here, before I start going through them and "finding" things I "need" to keep.

I really needed this post to get me thinking again:

Single lone socks
Undies with holes even if they will last another year
The ugly chair in my bedroom
Lotions and potions I no longer use

* Get rid of dried up play dough.

* Get rid of happy meal toys.

* Get rid of blurry or bad photos (especially if they're duplicate prints), unless it's the one shot you have of a momentous event.

* Get rid of broken crayons (yes, I know you can melt them to make block crayons. If you were going to do that, wouldn't you have done it already?).

* Get rid of things you have been collecting to do "recycled art" with your kids, unless you actually plan to do it this week. There will always be more.

* Get rid of scrap wood from that last project, unless you have an actual plan in mind for it.

* Get rid of scrap fabric. It breeds in the dark

Oh my gosh, also get rid of the switchplate you took off the light switch in your last apartment and it accidentally got packed (whoops).

Get rid of duplicate things you have from when you got married that you thought you'd keep both of in case one broke.

Get rid of at least one rubbermaid of the Christmas decorations you don't like that have been heaped upon you because your inlaws can't imagine that maybe you want a simple Christmas.

Get rid of the orphan socks and pairs of socks with holes in them - they're useless!

Get rid of the 9 extra cameras that haven't been touched since the digital camera was purchased.

Get rid of the two "spare" computers that barely work, take 10 minutes to boot up, and sound like jet engines when they run.

Get rid of the "spare" furniture that has been sitting in the garage and storage area since move in day.

On a related note, get rid of all of the boxes that haven't been unpacked yet (we moved here over 2 years ago! Clearly, we can live without whatever is in those boxes!)

Get rid of the 8 or 9 boxes of fancy baby clothes that will never be used, and are taking up precious space in the storage room. Sell them, or donate them, but make them disappear soon!

Ok, I'm stopping now, because this list has motivated me enough to get started right now!

This is such an excellent thread!

In another thread in this forum, someone said that she followed this rule: If you pick something up and wonder whether you need it, you don't. The things you truly need and love - you know that without hesitation. This rang true for me. So...I'm not there yet, but I'm trying to

I know it goes against what this thread is for, but I'd suggest keeping four hot pads instead of two. That way, if two are in the wash or get wet or whatever, you still have two.

And...
* Get rid of things that can make you money...hate all those knick knacks? Jeans don't fit anymore? Waffle iron/food processor/quesadilla maker just collecting dust? Bring them to a consignment store. Money's a big motivator for me.

*Get rid of lotions, bubble bath, etc that have a smell that makes you gag. I really don't want to smell like a mimosa or a moonlit path.

*Get rid of anything you can regift. Surely someone has a birthday coming up.
