UPDATE: I started this thread almost two years ago, and now we have finally bought a place and will be moving in about six weeks! DD is now almost 18 months old!

Here's the original post:

We are currently renting but are thinking about buying a place and moving in 9 months to a year from now (Jan 08 to Mar 08).

I am trying to start thinking and planning for this NOW, because 1) we are having our first baby in July/August and 2) when we moved DH's stuff into my place when we got married, it was a nightmare. In fact, I remember him finding me in the kitchen at midnight when the movers were due to arrive at 6:00 AM, sitting in front of a box of kitchen utensils, holding a spatula, and crying.

I've learned that both DH and I are packrats, but with sufficient time, we can make good decisions. So I've been using my second trimester energy to try and declutter as much as possible.

So, anyone else planning a move in 12 months? 6 months? 3 months? Two weeks? Let's share inspiration and encouragement! I'm going to post our goals and plans here, please feel free to share yours, too. Or, even better, if you moved recently, please share your tips and lessons learned!

In post #2 of this thread, I'm putting a list of links to moving info that I've collected, as well as the good info that people are posting to this thread. If you know of other good links, please share and I'll add them to the list!

Info from MDC mamas on where to find moving boxes for free:
Liquor stores - wine boxes great for glasses and vases. Also toy parts.
Supermarkets - ditto
Copy place or Office Max/Depot, Staples - ask for their paper boxes from their copy centers. Places like staples use their own logo boxes for customers so the boxes the paper comes in usually gets thrown away. They make great book boxes and kids clothing.
Craigs List - I found a folks on craigs list who were having yard sales and asked if they would let me get their boxes afterward. Got lots of them that way
Charities- Good Will, Salvation Army, Disabled Vets, etc. that come into areas to pick up donations - call and find out when they do pick ups and could you get boxes from them. Some do it some don't.
Freecycle - Offers come up frequently, or you can post a "WANTED" message if your group accepts them
Walmart - If you aren't completely opposed to walking into WalMart, try hitting up the housewares department (best sized boxes) around 11pm or midnight and asking for some boxes. The overnight stocking is the best time to pick up boxes, but if you wait too late they will all go into the crusher for recycling.
Plant Nurseries - My MIL works at a nursery, and they get boxes upon boxes full of various soils and such (all bagged, so the boxes aren't dirty or anything). She gave us at least 20 boxes medium sized or so.


Tips from USAA:
Moving Checklist from USAA:

•Create a move file to store information and collect expense receipts.

•Contact the local chamber of commerce or visitors' bureau for your new community. See if they can send you a telephone directory and newspapers.

•Take care of auto maintenance and repairs.

•Obtain coverage for your possessions while in transit or storage.

•Check school schedules and enrollment requirements.

•Get an auto insurance quote for your new location.

•Get change-of-address cards from your post office.

•Aside from friends and family, make sure you provide your new address to medical facilities, schools, magazines to which you subscribe.

•Have a garage sale. Donate anything that isn't sold to charity. (Don't forget to keep receipts for income tax deductions.)

•Arrange to pick up school records or have them sent to the new schools.

•Obtain appraisals for high-value items.

•Notify your utilities and local services of disconnect dates. Contact new utilities and tell them when to begin service, if you know. Some may require deposits.

•Properly dispose of flammables such as aerosol cans, cleaning fluids, paint, ammunition, weed killer and acids.

•Drain oil and gas from your lawn mower or other power equipment.

•Clean the refrigerator and the freezer; allow them to dry one or two days with the doors open. Remember to block the doors to keep them from closing if you have small children or pets.

•If you have children, compile a list of traveling games for the car or plane ride.

•Separate items you don't want to pack, such as suitcases, and store in an empty closet.

•Pack prescriptions and immediate necessities in an easy-to-access suitcase. If you are traveling by air, do not check this bag.

•Contact your homeowners insurance company at least 24 hours before you release your belongings to the mover.

Okay, so here are some of my mid-range goals, ones I want to accomplish in the next three months or so:

1). Get DH's cassette tapes transferred to digital format and donate all the used tapes

2). Work with DH to move the no-longer-used files from the home office desk to more permanent storage in our filing cabinents

3). Sort through all our books and donate any we don't want to move with us

4). Go through our two boxes of tools and find out what we actually have and get them into some kind of shape where things can be found when needed (right now they are just dumped into a box). DONE!

5). Clean out our storage space in the basement of our building. This project is the scariest. There is so much crap in there, and it's hard to do a little bit at a time, because you have to take out so much stuff to even see what is in there! DONE! Here's a slideshow of the process.

There's lots more, but these are the immediate goals.

I am in on the support tips whatever. We are moving across town 10 blocks in 11 weeks when we settle.

My goals-

Do a massive throw out, declutter, donate, freecycle in the next few weeks.

Pack a box a day starting next week. Then as we approach the last few weeks, pack more.

Now for the monkey wrench in the project....We are gutting our new kitchen after we move in. DH is going to start building the new kitchen cabinets etc right away before we move his shop. The only downfall, we cant use the large garage to store boxes etc right now.

NAK now - will post some goals later. We are pretty sure we are moving from Seattle to Portland this summer/early fall. Not too much time to prep - Ahhhhhh!!!!! And I am a total packrat But honestly, the prospect of moving my crap has definitely given me a more critical eye. But I need to establish a real plan - we have much to do before we can go!

Oh my gosh!! I was just thinking about starting a thread like this!!

We are in the early stages of building a house. It will be ready early-mid June. We put our house on the market last Sunday and had our first open house today.

I think it's GREAT that you are thinking ahead. We honestly had no plans to move. Everything just seemed to happen about 3-4 weeks ago so it's been pretty rushed. Luckily, I started de-cluttering and organizing about a year ago and that has made all the difference. We had a lot to do since we currently own a home and had to scramble to finish all the little projects we've let slide!

As far as goals, we need to find a buyer for the house. I went through and packed up about 10 boxes of stuff that we can easily live without for the next couple of months. We can't pack more due to lack of storage for the packed boxes and because we don't want the house to look TOO bare while we are in the process of showing it. So now it's just all about keeping the house clean and trying to attract buyers!

I'm subbing to this thread! We are under contract for some land and the house will be ready in early 2008. It happened much quicker than we thought it would. Now, we have to get our house ready for sale and I'm really stressing about the whole thing. I want to start packing NOW. I am scared stiff of the logistics of moving out. I figure that we can live without lots of stuff in the interim. I'm also currently doing a hard declutter and doing lots of Goodwill donations. But I definitely plan on starting the packing process soon. I really appreciate this thread!

I'm here!

We put our house on the market a week ago, and are looking at our first open house being this Sunday. We've spent the last several weeks fixing up this house and decluttering. Wow, what a job! Right now we have a larger house, but a small lot. We're looking into moving into a smaller house with a much bigger lot. We're loving living with less clutter right now. I took 2 loads of junk to the dump, and a whole trailer full of stuff is in my in-laws barn. As soon as our house sells, we're having a massive garage sale. I can't wait.

I don't like the stress of cleaning so much every day, though. My DS and I have both come down with a cold...I think partly from the stress of it all. 99% of our projects are done now though, so we can relax.

Honestly, I haven't thought too much about moving yet. I just want to get this house sold. I did consider starting to pack up anything we don't use right now to put in storage to make the move a little easier. I think I'll have to ask for some good boxes on freecycle soon.

Good luck everybody! This whole house buying/building thing can be stressful, but it is so exciting and full of possibility too!

It's very encouraging to hear that doing some major decluttering and organizing even a year ahead can be helpful.

In my case, the planning ahead is totally fear-motivated. I remember that DH didn't know too much about how to pack boxes. In his last move, he put all his old record albums in one of those big pillow boxes. Those suckers are heavy! It's a miracle that the movers didn't kill him on the spot: that's a big no-no. Both DH and I have back problems, so we need to hire professionals to move, and I want to be a really good client. So I'm researching that now.

About ten years ago I agree to help a grad school friend of mine who had arranged for professional movers to move her stuff to another state. They had to reschedule for a later date, and by then she would already have to be in the new state. She wanted me to be there when the movers loaded her boxes. Well, she left nothing in the apartment except the boxes. No toilet paper in the bathroom, no cups in the kitchen for water for the guys to drink. I was so embarrassed. Luckily, there was a convenience store nearby and I was able to run out and get some TP and cold drinks. After that, I swore I would always be prepared to be a good moving customer.

We came down w colds too at the beginning! I hated the cleaning part!

can i join?

we are planing to move in june. we will be moving about 6 hours away from where we are now.. from city suberbs to country/Very very small town.
the house is a bit bigger than our now one bedroom basement suite, but it has 3 bedrooms! im so excited about that. and it also has a huge amount of land (3 city lots i think) in comparison to our back yard now.
we just finished fixing up this place (its my moms basement suite) i painted everything and we put down laminate wood floors and built a cabinet over the gas fireplace. it looks great.. im sort of sad to leave all of my hard work.
the house we are moving into has a lot of work needed.. i like fixing places up though and onvce i get into it im pretty compelled to complete it.m dp is pretty hands and his pa who is also very handy will be around to help out. im getting really into feng shui, so my plan is to be very focused on it when we paint/decorate our new place.. and that means a major decluttering before we go! we have a lot of stuff.. mostly toys and clothes. i like nice things (not necessarily expensive, usually found or second hand) but i need to let go of some of it before we move.

my plans are to declutter and organise/pack one room every two weeks till we go.. i do home daycare, so i have to keep the place livable and nice till the middle of june, but there is a lot i can do.
once i have stuff packed up that we want to bring we are going to bring what we can fit in our van in may then again in june when we actually move up there. i really want to simplify our home. i feel like im always constantly picking up and cleaning and frustrated at all of the stuff everywhere..

Ooh, I'm going to sub to this, as well! We're hoping to move by the end of the summer, this year. We're currently renting a 2700 square foot house, and the lease is up at the end of June. We're renovating a teensy tiny 600 square foot bungalo, so I've been busy downsizing our stash of "stuff."

I finished cleaning the storage area this past weekend, and managed to get it down to two tupperware bins that we're keeping. I'm getting rid of about 16 boxes of stuff over the next couple of months, through either consignment, Craigslist.com, or a local charity that will pick up pretty much anything.

I need to find homes for several large pieces of furniture, including a sofa, a TV, two large beds (one is an entire bedroom set, so I'm hoping it'll sell), and various book cases. The kids have been very good about downsizing their toy collection, and I'm optimistic that it won't be too overwhelming to pack all of their stuff up this summer.

I'm in the process of downsizing our kitchen supplies. We really don't NEED 12 pots, when we only have 4 burners on the stove top. Am I ever going to be making enough muffins that the three tins I have will be necessary? Probably not. So I'm putting together a couple more boxes of kitchen stuff to donate.

While I'm doing my organizing and packing, my husband will be busy working on the renovations. The tiny house is basically a cottage right now. We need to put in plumbing, electricity, and add a couple of rooms. We need to add a bedroom, a laundry area, and possibly an office as I'll be working mainly from home.

We are moving at the end of August into a co-housing community. We will have about 1000 sq ft, so I really really want to get rid of a lot of stuff.

We've been living with my parents for the last year, and will until our unit is finished in August. All of our stuff is pretty well packed -- except clothes, etc -- but it was just thrown in boxes. I think we will have to go through everything and freecycle tons of stuff and repack the boxes. Sounds like a big job but I really do'nt want to be moving stuff we don't want into a new place. Especially since my due date is the week we will be moving. Crazy, huh?

I am really loving the way that the thought of moving is helping motivate us to declutter and simplify. I have found that this is very helpful for DH, especially. It's easy for him to think of how he might use something, someday, but the thought of packing that thing up and moving it to a new place puts it in perspective. This is absolutely true for me as well.

I want to join this thread! I'm in mid-move. My husband and I left NY in mid February. We packed all our stuff and moved to SC. We are staying in my Nana's house while we wait to move into our first home.

I love a decluttered house and always seem to have too much stuff. Most of my stuff is in boxes in the garage, and I really want to go through it and reduce so that I do not transport things I don't need to yet another house.

I'd love to connect with other mamas over this task, as I am having trouble finding the motivation!

I need to join, too!

We just found out that our landlady has sold our house--the new owners want to close on May 1st We found out this weekend when I checked my email on the way out the door to a funeral--can timing really get any worse?

It will be a local move, but we don't yet know where to, and once we decide, it will all happen fast, so I'm looking forward to hearing other, inspiring stories as I sort, toss, and pack!

ugh. i hate to even think about my impending move. i know it's coming, but i won't know exactly when until may. we're moving from NYC to charleston, SC. i'm trying to get rid of everything i own so i won't have to pack anything.

DH and I have made a little progress this week toward some of our goals. He started going through his business papers in our filing cabinet and was able to get rid of some stuff (good job, honey!).

He also took care of some financial stuff unrelated to moving that will help us keep new paper clutter from coming into our home.

I also found this article in the Times today about transferring tapes to CD's:

The Sermon on the Tapes. This should be helpful as we prepare to do something with the hundreds of tapes piled up under the desk in our home office.

It's so true!! It's crazy how you can have stuff sit around forever and not really think about it...then it's time to move and all of the sudden you see those things through new eyes!!

We have Freecycled and Craigslisted so much stuff it's not funny! I love it!

I would love to join! We are moving by the end of this month into next month. We bought a home and the closing should be by April 30th. You never know how much crap you have till ya move I swear!

guess I should add my goals. Well today for starters we are painting the dinning room and should have the hallway painted by mid week, then we will have inspectors come and check it out for our buyers and get the appraisal done. I have been freecycling like a mad woman. And tossing as well. I love Freecycle, whoever thought of that is a genius

I pack a little everyday. Id ont want to pack too much because we have a month to go but I try and do at least a box or two a day

Pretty basic advice, but good to remember:

If you will take your time and not be rushed about this, you will do a more efficient job and not be so stressed out. Do you hear me on this! I do not want you to make yourself sick. Slow and steady wins the race. Not crash and burn!

If you have plenty of time to prepare for the move, you can have everything labeled and ready to load on the truck, all before the final day. No stress and no worry. Also, you will be able to find things when you get to your new home. Take baby steps and each day pack up 5 boxes and keep them in the room that they belong in. Color Code the boxes and number them. Label on the outside the contents or which drawer they came from and put it on your master moving list. Get a clip board and keep everything together or a zip up notebook or canvas bag to hold all your markers and supplies. Keep your moving supplies together. If you are having to do this by yourself, you will thank me later.

we have all been sick with the stomach flu : ug.. so yesterday while baby was sleeping after a Very long night.... i took everything out of my disaster closet, organised & decluttered it. i know what and where everything is now (its our only storage) i have a huge bag of stuff for the second hand store and another of trash/recycling.. and i rooted out a bunch of clothes that i'd put away that now fit my 16 month old. summer clothes yay!
the only thing is that everything is still in bins in my bedroom, not yet put away but ill get to it today.ter the mountains of puked on laundry.. *sigh*

All right! I just found a cheaper rental, and will move the last week in April! Time to potty train the chillun now!

I haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but it caught my eye. I know I'll find some good stuff here. I'm a single mommy, so I'm doing this all by myself, while working full time. I can barely keep my house live-able as it is, so this should be interesting.

I've done a pretty good job with periodic declutterings, so at least it's not as bad as it could be. The most daunting tasks concern some areas I've been procrastinating with since my last move, one area in what should be my son's room. There's a built-in shelf in that room where I've shoved things I don't want to deal with, right from when I moved in here 2 years ago. Then there's the closet in the same room. Just looking at it makes me want to run away. Still, could be worse.

Ok, off to read the rest of the thread. Oh, and then to the bedroom.

I will probably 6 hours away to a new city a few states away in the summer of 2008. It will be a job transfer for dh. I've been decluttering like crazy. We are currently finishing the basement too and trying to get our house ready for a sale. The housing market here stinks right now so we need to do some upgrades.

SAHM to the munchkins (14.5, 11.5, 9.5, 3, and almost 2)

We are moving sometime around June across the country for DH's work. We're listing this house (tomorrow!) and then hoping/planning to buy a house in our new location.

Currently we are busting our butts trying to get some emergency last minute stuff done so we can have pictures and a virtual tour done in the next day or two--we've had all kinds of workman related disasters in the last couple of weeks so we're behind schedule.

1. Get recommendations. Ask friends, coworkers, and local real estate agents. Look in the phone book for moving companies that have offices near your home. You’re going to want to get an in-person estimate of how much your move will cost. Don’t rely on any estimate that comes from someone who hasn’t looked in every one of your closets. Don’t assume that big-name companies are best. Do not get estimates through websites that offer to “find you a mover.” Find the mover yourself and avoid the numerous scams associated with some of these sites. And don’t use household-goods brokerage services that find a moving company for you — they are not regulated by the laws that movers must follow.

2. Do an initial screening. When you have a list of recommended movers, go online to do a quick background check (you can do a more thorough check later). Call or go to the website of the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org). You also can call or e-mail the American Moving and Storage Association (703-683-7410, info@moving.org) to see if a moving company is a member, which means it has agreed to abide by the organization’s published tariffs and to participate in its arbitration program. AMSA membership is voluntary. As long as a moving company checks out in all other ways, the fact that it is not a member shouldn’t rule it out.
Be sure to check the consumer-advocacy sites www.movingscam.com and www.movingadvocateteam.com. Each of these has a blacklist of companies with a history of consumer complaints, as well as tips and general information about the moving industry. You can also do a search using the company name at Rip-off Report (www.ripoffreport.com).

Hopefully we'll be moving sometime this spring/summer. (fingers crossed) We really need to get out of here and find a ground floor house or apartment so my dd's can really live and play.

Moving Checklist from USAA:

•Create a move file to store information and collect expense receipts.

•Contact the local chamber of commerce or visitors' bureau for your new community. See if they can send you a telephone directory and newspapers.

•Take care of auto maintenance and repairs.

•Obtain coverage for your possessions while in transit or storage.

•Check school schedules and enrollment requirements.

•Get an auto insurance quote for your new location.

•Get change-of-address cards from your post office.

•Aside from friends and family, make sure you provide your new address to medical facilities, schools, magazines to which you subscribe.

•Have a garage sale. Donate anything that isn't sold to charity. (Don't forget to keep receipts for income tax deductions.)

•Arrange to pick up school records or have them sent to the new schools.

•Obtain appraisals for high-value items.

•Notify your utilities and local services of disconnect dates. Contact new utilities and tell them when to begin service, if you know. Some may require deposits.

•Properly dispose of flammables such as aerosol cans, cleaning fluids, paint, ammunition, weed killer and acids.

•Drain oil and gas from your lawn mower or other power equipment.

•Clean the refrigerator and the freezer; allow them to dry one or two days with the doors open. Remember to block the doors to keep them from closing if you have small children or pets.

•If you have children, compile a list of traveling games for the car or plane ride.

•Separate items you don't want to pack, such as suitcases, and store in an empty closet.

•Pack prescriptions and immediate necessities in an easy-to-access suitcase. If you are traveling by air, do not check this bag.

•Contact your homeowners insurance company at least 24 hours before you release your belongings to the mover.
