I keep mine I don't have a very good memory so reading them reminds me of my history and how I grew up and became who I am today

i've tossed old journals, trip diaries and even high school yearbooks, and a lot of old letters and notes, ftmp. i've sent some letters and cards back to the person who sent them, for fun, and i have one journal i can't toss - my old dead blog, so it's not cluttering up my life in any way. it's online. i can't bring myself to delete it because i still love reading it. since others were reading it, there's nothing i wouldn't want my loved ones to read, yet it does a good job of documenting the struggles and joys of my early-to-mid twenties and my entrance to motherhood. it also includes a lot of memories of earlier years, some of them not-so-flattering but they're filtered through the perspective of time passing by. maybe re-journaling is a good way to hang on to the things you do want to keep.

I don't have a lot of journals, but I will probably scan mine then toss them. I will get the spines chopped off at a copy store then run them through my ScanSnap. I think that I can "hide" them more easily on my computer, and they will still be there if I want to walk down memory lane some day -- but without taking up space or lying about where my kids will eventually find them. I really struggle with decisions around this stuff.

I have a lot of paper clutter and scanning is my happy medium of getting rid of it without getting rid of it. I don't have the time or energy to make the millions of decisions about what to keep/toss. With the ScanSnap it's actually faster to just scan it.
