We have had a cow now for a year. She has had one calf and is due in Oct. again.

I have a Jersey. She is dry right now because she is due mid-April.
I milked her for about a year until I dried her off.
I milked another Jersey for about 3 years prior to Maisy.
I feel like I am on vacation because I haven't milked in a couple months

I'm thinking about buying a friend's female Jersey calf once she's weaned, to raise for a family milk cow. I've never had an animal larger than a 100lb dog, so this is a big step for us. Any advice about starting out with a calf versus finding a cow in milk?
