on one of my quails. I feel like I have just been initiated into some elite club now. I am a registered nurse and have dealt with many wounds on people before, and I was completely grossed out by this procedure and what came out of that wound. Thanks to the internet I was able to diagnose it, get the right equipment, and get to work. It took about 45 minutes of digging and squeezing and dabbing and soaking, and now her foot is all bandaged up and I'm hoping for the best. It was a severe case from what I have seen on the internet, very deep. And that was seriously the grossed thing ever (did I mention that already?). Wow, if I was a drinker I'd have a stiff drink right now. The bird seemed to handle it a lot better than I did.

Wow!  Elite club indeed.  You really do need to be vet and surgeon to your birds, I guess.  What did you use for anesthetic?

No anesthesia, because the OTC stuff is not safe for birds, even topically. I soaked the foot for a long time in epson salts first and she really stayed calm through the whole thing. A vet could probably give better pain control or just knock them out during the procedure.

Oh yea. I vividly remember doing that. So gross. We had a chicken that had a bound egg once when we were first raising chickens. At first we didn't know what was wrong but when we figured it out we had to kind of squeeze the egg out. Basically the egg came shooting out with tons of feces and the smell was horrible. I think there was some infection. That was the grossest thing ever. Poor girl. You really do have to do a lot of things you never imagined when raising animals.
