I also posted this on another sub category of The Mindful Home. I would love your thoughts on this topic!
I've been on the hunt for twin mattresses for awhile now even though my boys wont need them for another year or so. I've been considering making them a buckwheat hull mattress but there are so many uncertainties with it like; how long will it last? or Will it be comfortable? It's relatively affordable considering how much non-toxic mattresses cost and it's 100% recyclable so I'm drawn to it. With shipping I expect to pay a little over $400 a mattress with the kits from openyoureyesbedding.com.
Just recently I came across an organic cotton and wool twin mattress from only $500 including shipping. The only downside is that it contains metal springs and is only one sided. I imagine it will be hard to recycle. It's from mygreenmattress.com.
Lastly, I have considered making my own wool mattress. I have a place to buy wool batts and I can just cover it with cotton ticking. I'm a decent sewer but I have found very little information about it online and I feel like I'm walking into dark water. I've estimated it would cost me a little under $500 (a mattress) for the material and I should have extra to make a pillow. This would be time consuming but I would pay less than half what a pre-made wool mattress costs.
Here are a few links to what I've found on that:
Is anyone else researching this? I would love some opinions and ideas!
