I wrote here about a month ago wondering if DH and I should trade in our adobe house in town with trees and water (and high mortgage and neighbor troubles) for a free piece of land on very dry windy, no tree land to build our natural home and raise our kids. It was quite discouraging that our alternative was so unpleasant yet appealing financially.
Somehow, our financial situation has looked up tremendously and we are going to get 3 or 4 acres up in the pristine undeveloped mountains where DH and I met. It's forested and has amazing views and there are covenants that don't allow lots of development. There is a community irrigation ditch and good access roads.
We can afford the down payment and the owner will finance.
In the meantime we are fixing our house to rentable condition and when it gets there, we'll move up to the land and probably live in a yurt for a bit then start construction when we can. It is soooo exciting. We'll be living in front of lots of national forest and it will be a great place to raise our kids.

Just had to update you all. Hopefully one day in the near future, I'll be writing you from the mountains and show you pictures of our place.

Peace!

Hi,
I am really new to this site, but I just read this and had to ask, are there any wild cats or things up there?? I also want to build an eco friendly structure, but am not even near thinking it a real possibility...anyhow, I hope to hear more about your Yurt living....and good luck.

Well, to address the big cats thing, I can say that there are no known big cats where we are looking.
I used to live higher up on the mountain and deeply surrounded by the forest and we did have small brown bears. There were a few bobcats spotted way off the land and 1 sighting of a lynx several years before I got there up even higher. There were plenty of deer and elk and a few coyotes. I am super afraid of big cats and woulnd't live anywhere they were known to be. Apparently, according to our local game and fish guys, Lama mountain in NM and the mountains around it have the widest array of wild animals living in them and there are big cats much further back in the deep mountains where only hikers go. I hiked all the way up one time and saw nothing.
I did live in a yurt for 2 years already with just my husband so it could be different with kiddos.

Hoping to not sound sappy but "anything is possible."

Just an update in case you read my post in T.A.O.
We are going to do a houseswap for about a year with our friend who has a really nice house. He won't mind if we have a bit of work done while he's in it and this way we can escape our wacky neighbor who always sues us while we are getting things set up on our land and such.
