Even though I do not have PPD (can you when your children are 4 and 5) I was looking through the posts.  I have battled depression and anxiety my whole life.  Half my life (literally) has been on Anti-depressants. Finally, the side effects grew too much and my dislike for allopathic medicine developed as well.  I tried St. John's Wort and a few other herbs.

My depression has been consuming me for months now.  I was to the point that I was going to put my children in daycare/public school so they wouldn't have to be with me when I'm like this.

Over in PPD I saw several suggestions for The Mood Cure so I got it from the library.  I got my supplements yesterday.  I was one of the 10-minute cures they talked about.  Within 10 minutes of taking 5-HTP I was smiling!!!!  Per the book I am taking other aminos as well.  I can't recall the last time I felt this good.  And all within less than 24 hours.

I decided to mention The Mood Cure over on this forum since not everyone here trolls on PPD.  Maybe it can help someone.  It's not for everyone but battling depression is tough and doing so without allopathic meds or a kind doctor can feel insurmountable.  Maybe this will help someone.  :)

I read it and did not really try any of the suggestions because if you follow her guidelines it will be crazy expensive and you'll be taking a gazillion pills a day. With that being said, I'm in the process of weaning off Zoloft, so I may give it another shot once I'm completely weaned. I have heard that it works for a lot of people.

I'm kind of doing "mood cure lite."  I am taking 5-htp, L-thiosine, and gaba.  I was always on fish oil, Cal-Mag so I'll continue that and my Gaba pills have some B-6, inositol, and two other aminos in it.  For now I'm going to avoid the multi, D vites, Vit C, etc.  I personally don't want to take a gazillion pills a day.  I don't see myself staying on the thiosine for long but it's helping now.  My intuition tells me that isn't a big problem.

Congrats on getting off Zoloft Green Momma!!!

Thanks for your post! I've never heard of the Mood Cure, but I am going to check it out. If it makes you feel THAT good, I have to at least give it a go. Glad you are smiling!  thumb.gif

I tried taking 5-htp, but instead of making me sleepy, I was awake all night.  I should try it again.  I can't remember if the book mentions it, but someone told me to take the fish oil with GABA.

I was depressed for the last 3 years.  I thought it was because my mom died.  I finally put the connection together that it might be my mirena iud.  I had it taken out a month ago & feel wonderful.  I actually look forward to doing things and creating again.

I will look for this book!  My 12 year old just got put on celexa and we'd really like to find a more natural solution for the depression she's been enduring.

Do you get your supplements at whole foods or somewhere similar.....and how do you determine dosage (excuse my lack of punctuation, keyboard isn't working well

I bought my supplements at the health food store.  All the doseages are layed out in the book.  It didn't work for me and I'm now on cipralex, but I've heard it works great for some people.

I've raved about the Mood Cure many a time. It seems like a great road map of what supplements to take for what ailment. I will say though that I wasn't able to help my bipolar disorder. My opinion is that its because of the dual nature of bipolar disorder, for me, it was too complex, to difficult a balance for me to achieve without medication.

5-HTP and GABA are both amino acids.  L-tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP which is then converted to serotonin in your body.  The GABA is used for a different type of depression.  The book lays out the dosages, why our diet is lacking in these needed amino acids, diet changes, other supplements, side effects, and even hormonal issues as I would suspect your DD has based on age.  Every supplement listed can be purchased at Whole Foods.  Costco even has 5-HTP now.

It's taken some trial and error but I've finally come to a daily regimen to ward off all anxiety and depression.  Expensive?  Yes.  But worth it.  I combine St. Johns Wort and 5-HTP which I wouldn't necessarily suggest to others but apparently I am that low in Serotonin. I don't take my 5-HTP at night because it will keep me up.

AM - L-Tyrosine and Liqui-kelp (thyroid problems), 1 St. Johns Wort, 2 Fish Oil, Inositol, Calcium

Noon - 1 St. Johns Wort, 100 mg 5-HTP, 100 mg GABA, 2 Fish Oil, Inositol

4 pm, 100 mg 5-HTP, 100 mg GABA, Inositol
