I know it seems so trivial but this seems to be a leftover from when I had ppd and post partum anxiety.

Before we had caller ID, I'd absolutely dread answering the phone. Being hounded with bill collectors doesn't help of course. Now at least it is bearable, but I still won't answer a private or unrecognized number most of the time, unless I can guess at the area code. If they don't leave a message then too bad for them Our number is also in the Do Not Call registry.

But I have important phone calls to make right now and my overall stress level from life is high, and that seems to just freeze me right over. On a normal day just to make an appt for the kids it takes me a while to work up the nerve, but right now I'm completely on edge and I can't pick up the phone at all.

My other huge anxiety trigger used to be getting into a car and being a passenger, but it seems to have abated over the past few years, thank goodness.

I can tell the stress is affecting my health...exzema has come back and it's not even winter :

Am I the only one who deals with this? How do I deal with this?

No! You're not alone! I too have extreme anxiety about the telephone. Just hearing it ring starts me panicking. We don't have caller ID, so its even more difficult. Basically, if someone uses my full name.. I'm not home. If there is dead air and a click, then I hang up. I'm not waiting for some computer dialing telemarketer or bill collector.

So ya.. I stay away from the phone. If I have to make a call to someone, I clear my throat quietly a million times, have trouble swallowing, etc.. its almost like performance anxiety.

I have PTSD, and Panic & Anxiety Disorder with Agoraphobia. There are quite a few things I have a hard time with unfortunately.

Wow!!!! I thought that I was the only one who felt like this about the phone! I don't ever answer a private number or an unrecognized number. And I always dread making any phone calls, even if its just to schedule an appointment at the doctor or something, my stomach feels all sick and twisted up and I get very nervous. I don't have the slightest clue how to deal with this. I'm just in shock that there are others!

Ok...wow...just so glad I'm not totally alone on this! :

Yep my stomach does flip flops, I'm nervous and I can't relax.

Yep if I hear dead air or clicking, I hang right up, or if it is my full name I suddenly become "the babysitter".

Me too! Me too! I can't stand the phone for all the same reasons. And yes, calling to make appointments is definitely stressful. If I have to make a phone call, I will often spend the entire day on stressing about, finally call, and then spend a while unwinding... If I have to make an important call for work, etc. it is comparable to a "normal" person having to stand naked on stage in front of a bunch of angry people with tomatoes...

Yes it is! : What's crazy is that I spent 6 years doing high school theater and would have no problem getting on a stage....but right now I'm trying to suck it up to call the salvation army to see if they still have rental assistance funds and if they do, well I'm just shooting myself in the foot by delaying this....I wish I had some rescue remedy.

Well I'm hoping that they do have funds and that you're able to get some. Also, what is "rescue remedy"?

Bach's Rescue Remedy. When I had ppd/anxiety after ds2 was born it really helped take the edge off.

Wow, thanks, I'm going to have to get some. I have some xanax from the doctor, but I'm really trying to stay away from stuff like that. I'd love to try something natural though.

Don't suppose you can take it while pregnant can you? I've had some horrible first trimester irritation and anxiety. Yesterday the only thought in my head was "I hate everyone!" Positive thinking seems to have taken a trip south.

I have problems with this too. It seems that every unknown phone call I've answered ever has been bad (I know thats unrealistic, but it feels that way). My family calls and it shows up on the caller ID and I take those, but otherwise I never answer, and I don't even have voice mail (well I do but its been full for over a year and I have anxiety about checking it so it stays that way - silly huh?) I cant handle calls from my inlaws, or from bill collectors (of which we have many) or from any unknown source. I'm not too bad calling out if I have a purpose, but I used to do sales and lost my job because I couldn't bring myself to call another single person.

Oh my gosh, me too, me too... !!!!

Except, I don't pick up even when it's family, most of the time. Usually, I let people leave a message. Then, I check, see who it is and what they want, and call back then. Or not... lol

I hate being on the phone, and I hate making phone calls. Today, my kids and I walked a long walk.. why? I wasnt having a great day, and I didn't want to call a taxi. !!!

Now, the walk isnt so bad, we've done it before. But the point is that *I* wanted a taxi, but couldnt get up the guts to call.

So glad I'm not the only one...

Speaking of dh's...I often find myself begging for Dh to make the really important calls...but he won't. I mean I know that he can't fix my issue for me and he probably thinks I'll get over it eventually...he also thinks it's a bit silly of me...

I've been totally happy the times we've been phoneless but too many family members and friends get worried if they can't get a hold of me

Cool! I'll have to try it. Does it work as well as xanax?

I am so happy that I am not alone! I mean, I feel bad that everyone else also has anxiety about the phone, but it is nice to know that I am not alone.

I HATE making phone calls. I'll put them off for days and weeks. I have to rehearse over and over again what I'm going to say. If I know that I have to leave a phone message I'll write down exactly what I am going to say or else I won't leave one.

I don't trust myself to talk to people. I can't think on my feet. Words elude me. My mind goes blank. People get confused. It is SO embarassing.

Yes I have phone anxiety!!! I havent been to be diagnosed with anything but I suspect depression, agorophobia, mabye bi-polar.

I freeze up at the thought of personal contact. I am also overwhelmed by small tasks now. I can call dh, or my parents, or dh's grandma (my pal) pretty much anytime but I have a hard time calling anyone else. for business or pleasure.

This.

Like others, I will take a loooong time to actually make a phone call and I'm always painfully relieved if I get a machine and can just leave a message.

Yep and yep. I have no problem writing an email about anything, even sticky issues, to people (like my former landlords), but gawd get me on the phone with them and I'd lose my backbone completely.
