I'm going to IC for now, and eventually would like to go to MC. But, I need to work on me for now. My current IC isn't very solution-based and doesn't offer much. He says "well, it doesn't look good." I KNOW it doesn't look good...that's why I'm here.

Anyways, I think I found someone that might be good. He said in his profile that he specializes in law-enforcement issues, and I think a lot of what I deal with is in relation to h's job...but OF COURSE he's not in my insurance network. He charges $80-89/session. I would probably see him every other week.

Is that a lot? Is that the going rate? Should I go out-of-network? I've called several in-network counselors and they're either booked, or they don't seem like a good match for me.

How much do you pay?

$90-$100 is a reasonable out of pocket amount. Any chance he would do a sliding scale?

i am seen at our community mental health and the fee is on a sliding scale. i pay a monthly payment of $50 and that is for my therapist and pysch. i see my therapist twice/month and the pysch once/month. i'm very lucky. i do not have insurance right now (it is in the works) but when i do i still will be able to be seen at the same sliding price and they will bill the insurance for the full amount ($280 for the pysch and $120 for the therapist) to be used towards my deductable. it's a good system; i'm very happy.

A couple years ago my therapist was 75/hour (I think) it was covered by insurance so had a copay only.

$40 for 50 minutes. It was $35 before the new year, but he upped his fee Jan 1st. However, I believe his fee was actually around $70'ish, but thank goodness it's sliding scale. All I said is that I couldn't afford that (which is totally true) and he immediately said he could do $35. Edit: Just to clarify, this is without any insurance.

But it's in no way intensive. I wouldn't expect to find that price if I was doing anything specialized (CBT, DBT, EMDR, whatever).

Good luck.

DP's therapist charges us $75 per hour because she is not covered by our insurance. If she was covered by our insurance my understanding is that the cost would be closer to $100 per hour. If we stay in network for therapy it is $20 per hour.

I don't post often, but thought I'd throw in my $.02 on this thread (who says the mentally ill don't have good senses of humor?)

I pay a $25 co-pay and she charges about $170. Worth every penny.

Good luck.
CBT should not be considered specialized treatment. CBT especially-it is one of the most commonly used therapies today.

I wanted to add here that this is without insurance, and what you would pay for a therapist (a LCSW or MSW). A psychiatrist or psych. would be more expensive, but would more likely be covered by insurance.

I pay $85 for my therapist (not a psychiatrist). I have health insurance and therapy is a benefit but I couldn't find a therapist in my insurance's network that was any good. The one I have now is really good and worth the $ though it is getting expensive.

Most seem to charge $75/hour. Some charge $125/hour for their extra education, knowledge and experience.

Definitely ask about a sliding scale.

I called around and told the therapists what I could afford, $25 a session. And I actually found a woman who is a PhD that would see me. She has been great so far.

With my insurance I pay $100/week for two-three sessions a week. I don't want to know what it'd be without my insurance.
