All my life, I have been 'Amanda'. A few months after my son was born, I started having dreams in which people were calling me 'Mandy'. I've had at least 3 dreams like this. I've been tossing around the idea of going by Mandy for months now, and I like the thought of going by Mandy. My husband thought I was nuts when I mentioned it to him. He said I just don't look like a Mandy. I don't know if wanting to do this has something to do with my PPD, which I keep under control with Zoloft, or something else. We use a shortened version of our son's name - Eli for Elijah, so maybe that has something to do with it... I even changed my siggy to say 'Mandy' to see how it looked. What do you all think...am I crazy for wanting to do this? How should I go about changing my name with family and friends?

ETA: Here's a pic of me. Do I look like an Amanda or Mandy?

Yeah, I must be nuts.

I think it makes sense and don't think it means you are crazy! If you like it, let it be your new nickname and introduce yourself to everyone new this way. Family and long-term friends will be slow to change, no doubt, but with new people, you can begin making the shift by always using Mandy. Good luck to you!

Well...I talked to DH about it and he is 'ok' with it. He said it will just take a while for him to get used to it. I mentioned it to my mom this morning, and she seemed a bit confused but was ok with it too. Mandy it is!

My given name is Amanda and I have gone by Mandy as long as I can remember, but I haven't officially changed it. I just tell everybody to call me Mandy. You can pick your own name if you want - whatever makes you happy!

Girl! I can think of plenty of crazier things than wanting to change one's name - I think you're safe (and sane). You are a beautiful young mama no matter what your name is!

I changed my name when I was 15 from Elizabeth to Kate...just really needed a change. My mom and dad still call me Elizabeth but everyone else has caught on. My dh says there's no way I resemble an Elizabeth.

I have a cousin Mandy and I didn't know her full name was Amanda until I was probably 12 years old.

I think you should just go for it. When you introduce yourself to people, say I'm Mandy. When you talk to some newerish friends say, You know, you can call me Mandy, I prefer it.

My husband went through the name change process last year. He's been called "Mike" by everyone since forever, except by his mother, and decided to officially change it. His situation is a bit different since nearly everyone already called him that.

I think you should ask everyone to call you Mandy for now, and if it feels right after some time, go ahead and change it legally.

Sounds like you have made your decision! Great! It's not as if Mandy isn't a typical nickname for Amanda, so it shouldn't shock too many people.

Oh I'm not interested in legally changing it, I just want to be called Mandy, like a nickname I guess.

Right. It hasn't been a very easy switch though. Everyone (even me ) keeps forgetting. It will just take time to get used to it I guess.

I think you have every right to be called what you want. And to change your mind whenever you want.

I used to go by a different name - it weirds my dh out that people who met me then use this "wrong" name. It's like he wants to correct them or something. It's amusing to me.

I do think your picture looks more Amanda than Mandy, but who cares!?
