The past week or so, DD has only been pooping about once per day. She's almost two months old. I can think of two reasons: I gave her almond milk a couple times last week, which she could still be 'stopped up from' (no flaming, okay? trust me, I learned my lesson - although I fail to see how almond milk is any worse than formula, but that aside...)

Or, I've been eating a lot of dairy the past couple weeks. Also a lot of garlic, and just richer, yummier foods in general.

She sometimes acts as if she wants to eat, but pulls off periodically, making a face like my milk tastes yucky. Any ideas?

TIA

At some point babies do start to poop less. It could just be a coincidence.

I'm just curious though - was the almond milk instead of bm?

Surviving sleep deprivation one day at a time with dd (Oct '11) & ds (Oct '08).

I don't think you can call anyone constipated if they are pooping once a day. It can be normal for a breastfed baby to poop as little as once every TEN days! However I understand this is a big change for her which makes you wonder... does the poop look & smell like normal breastfed poop? How long ago did she have the almond milk? I assume there was a change in her poop then - has that change subsided?

Em stopped pooping so much when she was about that age, about 7 weeks? Sometimes once a day, sometimes twice, sometimes three times. She now always gets one good huge poop in the morning, and usually one or two during the day, but sometimes only the morning poop. As long as it's once every day (or even every other day), and she seems healthy, I wouldn't sweat it.

From what I hear, constipation is only a concern if the poop itself is hard, instead of breast-milk-mushy.

Could be she doesn't want to eat, just wants to suck. Em will do that-- she'll be mouthing and gnawing on my shoulder, then I put her on the boob, the milk lets down, and she pulls off and makes a face at me like "what are you DOING to me?" At those times, she'll be a lot more content just sucking on my little finger, her own thumb, a toy, or a paci.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense! Thanks to the other poster's as well

This happened to us over the last week. Olivia is 6 weeks now, and she went 3 days without pooping last week! I did some research and spoke with her pediatrician, and the pp is right about it being normal not to poop for a week to 10 days for breastfed babies! This is something that generally happens around 5 to 6 weeks or so.

Even though I was told this was normal, it was concerning for me too! When she finally did poop, she had two giant poops and one small one in that same day.

~Erin~ totally in with Olivia! 5/31/09
