I usually hate "The Doctors" (tv show) because they are so medically minded. ALL of them were saying that On Becoming Babywise is dangerous and not recommended. The OB (who I usually can't stand) actually recommended the Sears book! I couldn't believe it!

So, if you have a mainstream friend who is thinking about Babywise and you want to give them some mainstream people saying it's bad, find the clip online! It's the very first segment on the show.

Hi!

Yup! I expected it from him, but not their resident OB and the ER doc.

If the ER doc you're referring to is the younger guy, he was vocally supportive of homebirths when Rikki Lake was on it way back when. I believe two of his cousins were born at home.

I'll watch the show off and on and the worst really is the OB, she definitely speaks from an ultra-cautious point of view.

I must be pretty far out of the mainstream. I've never heard of the show you're talking about, and I have no clue what "Babywise" is. Would someone mind enlightening me?

I've never read Babywise, only seen it on the bookshelves, but from what I understand (and from what they mentioned on the show) it focuses on putting babies on schedules - sleeping schedules was what one of the doctors on the show was opposed to.

The show is four doctors - a plastic surgeon, a ped, an OB and ER doc talk about random issues, sometimes interesting and other times not so much. Their opinions range from more AP to very cautious/conservative medicine.

Saw this today. And yeah it did surprise me about the OB using that book for her child. But what also shocked me was to hear her say that more and more women are choosing to have elective C-sections and that's great because it's all about giving women choices. Seriously? Promoting elective C-sections?... Sorry, tangent.

I had to look up what Babywise was too...PDF? How does that work? How do does denying a baby food help them sleep better? How in the world can it help a baby to be artificially directed towards a schedule?

How stupid is that?

You and me both! I decided to just stay away from books that don't promote AP for awhile... I can't deal with the horrible advice. My sister in law gave me a few mainstream/conservative books during my pregnancy... Babywise was not one of them. However, Secrets of the Baby Whisper was... have any of you heard of this book? What are your thoughts on it?

I read the Baby Whisperer and the Toddler Whisperer books. I found some good ideas regarding routines and sleep habits. It helped me figure out a better sleep schedule for my then 1 year old. As with all books there is good and bad. She really pushes routines rather than a set-by-the-clock schedule. It's about establishing routines so baby knows what is expected next. There is probably more, but this was what I got out of it. Could be worth a read depending on where you are at in your parenting journey. I don't remember anything terribly negative about it but it's been a couple years since I did read them.
