You simply can't get by without a car seat.
A lot of people simply get by without a car. It happens.

But we do have a car seat that I bought new. While I do babywear, DP doesn't so much and we do use a stroller for outings to the park. My dad bought us the stroller. DP's mom bought us a bouncy seat and our son likes it so we do use it. It's a good way for him to get his arm and leg flailing exercise without knocking the wind out of mommy and daddy (he's a strong kid ... who'd have thunkit?) We have BPA free bottles but they never get used, and we don't own a crib.

The article seemed to me almost written by someone without any children. Like they had made all these 'observations' about what would be handy & essential, etc. It just came across to me as from someone who hadn't been there. Just my opinion!

I got a crib, it was used somewhat in the beginning. She would sleep and then I would transfer her to bed when she would wake. It got old quick.

I got a stroller because I don't drive and it has a huge basket where I put the groceries.

I got a pump, thinking it would be nice to pump so DP could feed her sometimes. It came with a couple bottles, she wasn't into it at all.

Never had a bouncy seat, but someone gave me a swing. She hated it.

We have a car seat, that on the times we have to go somewhere in a car it gets used. Soon we'll be driving and it will get used a lot more.

And I couldn't live without my carrier!

I love the minimalist lists on this thread. Still need the carseat, but other than that, realized I could have this baby today and have what we need around the house already, just from the stuff friends have donated to us!
So much of what the baby marketing industry says that we "NEED" to raise babies is just junk. I'm looking forward to taking the minimalist approach with #3.

I like having more than just exactly what I need. I try to buy used when safe/possible and I give away (or sell) the items I have once I'm done, so I don't feel bad about getting stuff just because it's cool or convenient or fun or pretty.

Mommy, (no worries, she comes with the boobs)
Daddy, Might be optional
Pack and Play (yeah I love mine for nooky time and for older babes, or beach trips)
Car Seat
A big do-it-all purse for on the go parenting

There may be add ons or things taken away from there though depending on the baby. For instance, my LO needs a soft fuzzy something in her pack and play to sleep with, white noise, and DARK. These are things she will not sleep without. But the bedding sets? The nursery sets? Seperate bedrooms? Pacis, Millions of stupid uncomfy outfits? Bottles for breastfed babies? NAH, clutter.

We really used a few cotton pants, onsies, cloth dipes, boobs, mommy and daddy for the first 6 months of A's life.

I think people want to make it a big deal. Its less of an issue to have a baby, in terms of stuff, than people make it.
