We tend to forget that music itself is a language.
Musical experiences occur between a parent and newborn baby long before words begin to make sense. For centuries, mothers all over the world have sung lullabies to their babies to soothe, and to calm. It is musical language - the rhythm, the rhyme, the repeated phrases, the gentle rise and fall of melody and, of course, the beautiful moments of silence as a baby absorbs its environment.
Newborn babies enjoy hearing musical patterns through their loved one’s voice and motion. They enjoy moving as sounds occur, they reach, hold, quiver, lift and look. Babies hear sounds and voices that compel a musical response through movement with baby-babble, or infant-speak.
A baby and adult are bonded in their musical experiences. Later experiences support emotional engagement with different styles of music heard, happy, sad music, music for dancing, music for being calm, music for communicating or just to listen to.
Listening, moving, observing, responding to music: Regular and thoughtful musical experiences binds the crucial sensory mechanisms in babies. Music helps to communicate sensory development, gross and fine motor growth, supports emotional management and is of course, socially participating.
Music making with The Music House for Children
Our music sessions are designed to link all those vital components that encapsulate a full learning and joyous experience with their adult. Music sessions encourage singing to and with your baby, and enabling spontaneous movement that in turn, encourages communication with others.
Sessions involve moving, instrumental playing, singing, listening and dancing, and babies explore and respond at their own pace. Adults can do much to enhance not just their baby’s musical enjoyment and also their own by allowing time to observe, to participate and to musically respond to their baby.
Finding a good music session is often difficult because of shortage of music teachers who understand young children and babies – psychologically and physically. Musicians need to share musical skills to each age group appropriately. Music teachers working at The Music House for Children are trained to deliver appropriate musical experiences with quality materials to the different ages as the baby grows up.
We hold regular training sessions to include families, child minders, teachers, nursery staff and musicians. To support home and nursery music making we created beautiful music books and instruments that can be enjoyed and treasured.
When considering music for your child or group think about what you and your baby will take home. Even just playing music to young children can develop a lasting love of music itself. Being aware of the very best that you can give your child takes time. It’s worth doing. Explore what is on offer around you and go with your instinct. Your child’s response is enough.
