Is my 1 month old sleeping too much?

My baby likes to sleep I think. She's almost 5 weeks old. She will go up to four hours sleeping at a time during the day. But then she will also spend 2-3 hours awake. It really varies.

Right now she's had a long nap...approaching 4 hours.

If she's sleeping peacefully, do I let her sleep if she is a chunky girl gaining lots of weight (midwife was impressed, 2 pounds in 2 weeks) and feeding well?

Can I trust that she knows best in regards to her sleep needs?

Absolutely. If she is developing well, gaining weight and not showing any signs of dehydration let her sleep. Sleep is very important for healthy development. And for mama's sanity ;-)

I posted about this when my DS was between 4-8 weeks. We were taking about 20-ish hours of sleep per day at that age. He's now 4 months old (today!) and has settled into a routine of an am nap of 2 hrs And a pm nap of 2 hours & then sleeps all night. It will all change soon mama, & you're right, baby knows what she needs!
