Just wondering... I thought baby oil is just mineral oil with fragrance. I bought just plain mineral oil to massage my ds. It says on the bottle that it is a laxative (for adults). What else can you tell me about why this is toxic.. shouldn't even go in a landfill, etc. I also heard that you shouldn't use olive oil on skin, but some kind of lighter oil... grapfruit seed oil, etc. Tell me more...

I dunno why you shouldn't throw it in the trash, but as someone who worked at a natural skincare store for years, I know that mineral oil tends to clog pores. It can give you zits, and massage therapists sometimes say that it inhibits skin's ability to breathe or circulate. For massage and skin care, natural oils like olive, almond and apricot are better. Some people choose not to use nut oils on babies because of the (slight) potential to develop an allergic reaction (and often grownups who have nut allergies can't use them).

hi there,
Im a massage therapist. Mineral oil is bad for the skin. I use grapeseed oil. Its pretty cheap and I have never had anyone have an adverse reaction to it. Just FYI I was given some lovely massage lotion from orgins and my dd had a rashy reaction to it. I think it was the almond oil in it. I would stay away from nut oil on babes, but the grapeseed seems to be just fine. You can add a little lavender if you like...mmmm so nice!
Enjoy massaging your babe!

I have some non-mineral baby oil from Weleda that smells lovely. I use it on DD to get off sticky poo mostly. I also use it on my leather sandals (told to use stuff suitable for skin by the shoemaker) and on my hair occasionally (for hair I usually mix w/ cheaper vegetable oil, though, so I don't run through it too fast but also don't smell like a salad!).

breastfeeding, babywearing, homeschooling Heathen parent to my little Wanderer, 7 1/2 , and baby Elf-stone, 3/11!
