Hey ladies~

I am just realizing I have a fussy/high needs baby. I guess it doesn't bother me much, but she started spitting up a lot, and had to have some tests. She pretty much cries the whole time she is awake, except when she is in her alert state. The tests said she is fine, but dr. says less comfort nursing, because of air/gas. There were times when I was nursing her for like four hours just to quiet her down. I am cutting out dairy, and gassy foods, and taking her to a chiro.

My dh just called, and he was explaining Ava's issues to MIL. She was like "are you feeding her solids yet, that might help." WTH?!! He said no, that she would be exclusively bf until 6 months. She said "I never would have done that to you boys". Like we are abusing her for doing the best possible thing for her! She said dh was fussy, and began to feed him cereal at 5weeks on dr.'s orders.

Anyway, gottaa go. Dd is kicking the hand I am trying to type wit6h. I swear, she ACT LIKe she is starving all the time, but she's gaining weight, and 'I don't thibnk growth bspurts last from birth till 4weeks. Sorry bout the messed up typing,

Chelsea,
I'm so sorry--I've BTDT with the high needs babies, DS was really super fussy, uh...still is!

Anyway, some things that helped us (if you want advice), check out the happiest baby on the block book--try loud white noise, like the vacuum or a fan. Swaddling if she takes that, and if you can't comfort nurse (is it possible you have oversupply? Read some of the posts earlier on this thread about that, sounds like it might be an issue for you esp. considering the spitting up) you can try a paci to comfort her.

Also, my DS really liked being bounced on the balance ball (or birth ball if you have one) in his sling. I mean, bounced pretty hard. Not just gentle rocking. I spent so many hours like that, with the TV captions on so the TV didn't bother him. I got thighs of steel! And the white noise. I also have the delta sleep system CD, it's very calming and good 'white' noise.

Other than the possible dairy sensitivity, just remember that it will pass--around 6 weeks is the peak for "colic" (I hate that term...) and it's usually a lot better by 3 months. But do hand her off to DH or a friend so you can get a break now and then. Dealing with a constantly fussing/screaming infant really, really takes a lot out of you.

When my DS was about 5 months we got the amby hammock--they're so expensive now, but he really liked it. It really helped with his reflux/breathing issues and it was the only place he'd sleep other than my arms. He was the catnap king!

We did try the hylands colic tabs and the gripe water and neither really did anything, but it got better once I eliminated dairy so I hope that gives you some relief too!

Hang in there!!

Lioneyes, I'll second what Sleepymama said in that the fussiness will get better. My dd turned 8 weeks yesterday and for the past week or so, she's been much calmer during her awake time. Before then, she would just fuss and cry a lot. I know that being screamed at is no fun.

Mraven, I'm big chested as well and try to avoid NIP as much as possible and, when I have to, I try to be in a family friendly place like a children's museum or the like. I also have oversupply so it can get really messy and it makes NIP really complicated. *sigh*

My 4 yr old dd was great today! She played on her own for over an hour which let me get in a fabulous, drool-inducing nap so I feel like a new woman.

Gazing furtively at you from under my siggie!

Thanks for the suggestions and support mamas. I do feel very lucky that for the most part, she sleeps really well at night.

I also have large breasts, and nip is difficult. I have had to use a nipple shield due to flat nipples. It makes it so much more fun to have to get that sucker on to nurse. I am so happy that she seems to be weaning herself from it now. Keeping my fingers crossed!

lioneyes -- we've been there, too. It is so hard to hear all of that crying. Just realize it's not your fault.

So, we had quite a week. We got back yesterday from the hospital where Rob had surgery for a blocked intestine. I knew something was wrong because his fussiness for the last 3 weeks had seemed more like discomfort (vs. DS1 where crying was just what he was doing). Anyway, he has a 2 cm incision that should be the only thing hurting him now. He's not quite back to eating a ton, but he's definitely on his way.

Last night I realized why Courtney has been extra fussy... She has her 2 bottom canine teeth coming! I never would have thought my 7 week old would be getting teeth... Have you mamas seen teeth yet???

I don't know really what to do for her since she is so young. I got new teethers... Many different styles... She doesn't like them... She just screams even more. The only thing that remotely helps her is to set her in my lap and nurse her or give her cold breast milk from a bottle. I'll have to get the hylands teething tablets tomorrow. I didnt get them because it wasnt what my mom recommended... Is she too young for those also?? Would she be eating that for her food instead of getting the nutrition she needs from breast milk? I tried the baby ora-gel but she didnt seem to like that? What would you mamas use on a baby this young?

Skye was born with two lower teeth! Of course since they were already through we haven't had to worry about teething issues at all. With DS we used a wash cloth that I ran though freezing cold water and squeezed out, then rolled up. He loved to chew on that.

Oh my goodness! Teeth!? Nope - none here yet. I'm still cherishing these toothless grins.

We go in tomorrow for Meg's two month check up. I cannot believe she's two months old already. Here are a couple pictures. Let me see if I can do the links right!

Where is everyone??

We had our two month appointment today. Meg weighs 11 pounds, 8 ounces (up three pounds) and is 23 1/4 inches long (up 2 1/4 inches). She's my smallest baby and my slowest gainer. It's kinda nice to have a smaller one!!

Hey guys. ^^ NAK

Elijah is 6 weeks old on wednesday, and we are going to the county offices in riverside tomotrrow to get his birth certificatesigned and stuff! So exciting! Only non exciting part is that it is nearly two hours away (with baby, only like 1 hour and 15 without baby)!! We are levaing tonight and staying at a friends house. Elijah has already had so much traveling experiiance. He has been out to riverside TWICE already! my little trooper!

He has to weigh close to 12 pounds (we dont have a ped yet, so we dunno for sure. I can't find one I like!!) and hasgrown at least an inch! he is a pureply boob fed baby, and has never had his butt in a disposible! I am pretty proud of myself for sticking to my guns about boobs and butts. heh! I had so m any people say "Wee howyou feel in a few weeks about that!!" andI am jsut more cemented in my choices now!!

Elijah sound like a cutie - and HUGE!!! Way to go breastmilk!! So, what kind of diapers are your favorites? We've been using cloth too. I did buy some Seventh Generation diapers for when we visited my mom. So, Meg's bum has seen a disposable - but a chlorine-free one!! LOL

((3 Little Monkeys)) How sad!! I'm so glad you found something that works.

Hey mommas! I had to get nursing bras today, so I threw Caleb on the scale while we were at the store. He's up to 12 lb and 9.6 oz. He was 6 weeks on Saturday. With his size and the cloth diapers he's fitting into 3-6 month sleepers really well already. He has some reflux and I've had to eliminate dairy, but other than that we are doing really well. A few problems with a strong letdown, but he is nursing really well and actually sleeps some decent stretches at night. Such a different baby than dd was. DD is finally starting to settle down with everything and she loves her brother so much. It can be really sweet to watch, when she isn't tackling him with all her love. Going out with both of them has been better than I thought it would, we've been to the grocery store several times, Babies-R-Us, the science center and the zoo, just the three of us. The hardest part is that dd has decided to potty train and getting to a bathroom in time.

lioneyes- Your dd sounds just like my dd as a baby, except that dd didn't ever sleep well. She still doesn't. She was also born on Feb 20th, maybe it's something about that date.

sleepymama-thanks so much for those links about wrap wearing. I have been using it for a little more than a week, it has quickly become my favorite carrier!

~lioneyes~ Still want to get together with other portland area folk? I am pretty sure pgnportland would be interested. She has limited computer access-I will ask her about it next time I talk to her. Who else is from around here? Ellasmama? Anyone else?

3 little monkeys-Sorry to hear about the GERD, that must be rough!

Well other than still trying to figure out allergies we are doing well. I am having a hard time with the allergy stuff, not only dealing with a super upset little guy, but analyzing all my food on the bad and good days, and always wondering if what I am currently eating is going to cause Asher pain and discomfort later.

Yikes teeth this early!

My3boys, I love the pictures of Meg - she is a cute little chunk!

Sherri, what a bummer about the GERD but I'm glad the medicine seems to be helping.

Snarfy, sounds like you have a big, healthy baby boy! My dd is 8 weeks and doesn't weigh 12 lbs yet so he must be in the top percentiles!

Not a whole lot going on here. Leah had her 2 month checkup today and all is well. I decided to go ahead and let her have her vaxes on schedule for now after delaying the Hep B at birth. Most of my problems are with my 4 yr old who's taken to whining and crying a lot over EVERYTHING! I'm looking forward to drier weather (I'm in the Seattle area so I'm sick of wet and grey by now!) and getting the kiddos outside.

Savannah, sounds like we have twin 4 yr olds. Mine can't open her mouth without whining - couple that with a 2 yo who defines the term "terrible two" and it's no wonder I feel like I'm losing my mind!

I am waiting for the GI specialist to call to let us know when our appt. is. The meds seem to be working thankfully, and she's getting back to her happy self and is sleeping well again. She sleeps from 8 pm to 3 am every night

You are welcome honeybee! I just bought an ellaroo wrap since I love wraps so much this time. I haven't even been using my ring sling.

kaia is 5 weeks old and is really a happy baby. We figured out last week that she actually wanted to be PUT DOWN. Good god, I didn't think that was possible after DS. But she was super fussy and didn't want to be held in many different positions, didn't want to rock, be bounced, walked around, nursed, etc. So we tried the bouncy seat and she got all smiley and wiggled around. What the heck?? A baby who wants to be put down?? She sat there for over half an hour, just wiggling and looking around. So this is fantastic. She still wants to be held while she sleeps but I can do stuff with DS and some chores around the house at last. She sleeps from about 10pm-8am waking about every 2-3 hours. Sometimes I get 4-5 hours out of her once a night, but not very often. It's OK, I feel so much more rested than with DS because I had to supplement him then get up and pump This EBFing rocks!!!

She is probably 9.5 lbs now, gaining well but she lost a lot at the beginning so she's a little small now. But her thighs are so chunky she's outgrowing the newborn diapers (we use mostly kissaluvs 0's and wool covers & soakers I made) She's never been in a sposie either though I have some for emergencies. I think she's going to outgrow them before they get used. I guess I'll give them to a friend or something!

Here is my favorite picture of her too (taken before the baby acne set in, thank goodness! Poor girl is very bumpy this week)

HI. I was new to the site when I gave birth, but I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Leslie, and my ds is also a Feb. baby. He was born Feb. 25, 2006. I was 39 weeks pregnant, but it was actually his original due date before it changed after the first u/s. He weighed 7lbs. 13oz. at birth.
Things were going well the first 3 weeks and then all of a sudden, ds started spitting up excessively. He saw a Ped. the next day who saw nothing wrong with him. Two days later, he vomiting forcefully so we made an ER visit. Doctor there said he wasn't dehydrated and that nothing serious was wrong, but made us a Ped. follow-up visit for the next day.
We got to the PEDS clinic (Military) the next day where ds begins projectile vomiting and is definitely dehydrated. He was admitted to the hospital immediately, and within a few hours, he was diagnosed with Pyloric Stenosis. (http://www.pedisurg.com/PtEduc/Pyloric_Stenosis.htm). He went into surgery the next day to correct it. Recovery didn't go well at first and wasn't allowed to eat for 24 hours, but finally things started to turn around and he was able to keep some Pedialyte down and then we worked our way back to breastfeeding. He's had no problems since. I wasn't happy to have had to introduce the pacifier (his only comfort when he couldn't eat for so long) and bottle to him at just 3 weeks, but it was necessary. And I've seen no negative effects from it. He's back to EBF now.
Now, we're just working on getting his weight back up. He's still under his birth weight at 4.5 weeks old, but he's eating like crazy so I expect him to start gaining quickly.
My poor little boy went through the ringer, but I'm happy now that he is healthy and happy again.
Well, it's almost time for us to go on a walk.

Leslie, mom to John :, 02/25/06

Just popping in quick here. Loving the cute baby pics--Kaia is a doll!

Sherri--glad she is responding to the meds--do you have any testing coming up? While we were in the hospital, the doctor offered to do the upper gi and wanted to start reglan, but I declined. E seems to be doing a lot better with a few days of Zantac.

And our fun adventure this week....early Monday she spiked a 102.8 fever and I had to take her to the ER where they did a bunch of tests including a spinal tap. Turns out she has a UTI and the beginnings of a kidney infection so we were there for two days of antibiotics and are on them until we get the result of her VCUG test next week. Saw her ped this morning and she was leaning towards it being a kidney reflux issue because of how she presented so we will see.

The fun news was how huge she is getting---the nurse measured her at 23.5 in and 11.7 pounds at admission--she's 6 wks now. April---we're going to have to break out the 3-6 month sleepers as well!

Leslie---welcome! sounds like an intense couple days/weeks for you guys! So glad things are settling down and you have your happy babe back!

Wow, leslie, that is a rough start for you guys. That's amazing and wonderful that all of that didn't affect his breastfeeding! My first baby was a NICU baby and also got a pacifier because he was NPO at first. I'm so thankful every day to have a healthy baby this time--surgery on a newborn is something no one should have to go through

Hi again everyone!

Ben is now 6 weeks and just went on his first road trip - we drove from Canada down to north dakota (fargo & grand forks) for two nights, and had a nice time. Taking a trip with an infant is sure different! We barely had time to shop, and I didn't even get a chance to swim in the hotel pool. Oh well.
We're still dealing with a lot of fussiness, especially in the evening. He cries and cries, and we can't seem to comfort him at these times. He's super gassy much of the time, and his latch seems to be getting worse as time passes (I can hear him gulping air). I think I will go see a lactation consultant to see if there's anything I can do to fix it. The good news is that he's gaining weight like crazy, and has grown a few inches! He was 6 pounds 13 ounces at birth, and I believe he's close to 12 pounds now. Wow!

winn

Millie is fighting a stuffy head cold it is hard for her to eat i'm putting saline drops in her nose.
We have had a rough month ,our baby has been perfect, but my best friend had her full term baby still born the day after Millie came. It has been hard. Then last friday one of dh's closest friends hung himself. This week has been all about that. we have very few tears left

boycrazy, I'm so sorry for your friend. You must feel so guilty.

Lioneyes, when i opened your pic I thought I was looking at a picture of Kaia! They look totally alike, especially the hair and coloring. Here is a similar pic

boycrazy- I'm so sorry, dh's uncle was diagnosed with cancer only a few hours before dd was born and died a month later. I remember what a bittersweet time it was.

Here is the album I sent out to family and friends last week:
