Hi;
Has anyone ever started their bb on solids BEFORE 6 months? My little one is almost 5 1/2 months and seems to be REALLY interested in what the rest of us are eating. I've always been pretty vigilint on waiting until at least 6 months before feeding a breast fed baby. What do you think??
Here in France they only just recently changed the original recommended age from 4 months to 6 months.
Elaina shares your ds birthday. It is totally not recommended to start before 6 months but Elaina has been going crazy when she's sees food. For the past week, I have been giving her tastes of fruit. She kind of licks it, tastes the jiuce but doesn't really eat it. I know there's a lot of people who would disagree with me but it satisfies her curiousity without really feeding her.
Is he sitting unassisted? Does he have a pincher grasp? Can he put food in his mouth? Has he lost the tongue thrust? Does he actually steal food off your plate? If yes to ALL the above, I'd try it. Letting him self-feed, not spoon feeding. If not, I'd give him a bowl and spoon and cup with a little water and let him play.
Our son, my 3rd baby, shocked me when he showed interest at food right at 4 mos. I hadn't planned on even thinking about solids until 6 mos but he made it very clear, he wanted some solids! So we started giving him tastes & he loved it. We let him suck on apples & pears & bell peppers, he LOVED that, & gave him tiny tastes of all sorts of fruits & veggies & homemade juices.. By 5 mos I started pureeing some veggies & he'd eat a few tsps. a day. I never noticed that this affected his nursing at all & he never had a tongue thrust or any gagging. He'd fuss if he even saw someone with a meal that wasn't sharing it with him.
Coincidentally, he has 8 teeth now (including 2 molars, crazy kid) at nearly 8 mos of age, & got the 1st one at 3 mos. We've always theorized that just maybe all his early teeth & his early interest in food were related. Who knows.
My DD showed interest very soon after 4 mo and I started giving her tastes around 4.5 mo. She was sitting unassisted by then and showing signs of teeth coming through etc. She didn't really get food until 5.5 mo when we started giving her little bits of what we had for dinner. I started out letting her lick apple slices.
