Anyone have big babies? I have a friend whose son is 6 mo old and around 25# or so... wearing 18 month old clothes. Anyways, she's wondering about car seats and other things about handling a baby who is so big.
Please share any and all tips, advice, suggestions or stories you've got!
The plus side
*No worries about them losing weight when sick
*My first ds never fit anything long enought to wear it out so ds2 had practically new clothing at no extra cost to me
*Elbow dimples --too cute!
*Never doubted my milk supply
Challenges
*grew out of bucket carseat early. They woke up everytime we got them out of their convertable carseat.
*heavy to carry them around the house
*people expected more from them because they looked older.
My third babe is the long, skinny type and I sure miss all the "leg fat" sometimes
But it is sure eaiser to wear her in the sling I tell ya.
My babies have been pretty big, DD was 20 lbs at 5 months and DS was 20 lbs at 6 months. We did have to get rid of the bucket seat early since they were so big at young ages--we often wondered why we even bought the bucket, at least we got to use it with both of them. I really enjoyed using my sling with DS (didn't have one with DD, but did use a Snugli) and as he got bigger, I just moved him to my hip which was awesome. They both outgrew clothes pretty quickly, so I rarely spent a lot of money on clothes. However, once they started walking they both slimmed down a lot and clothes last a lot longer now. It's funny, DS is now 28 months and weighs 25 lbs and DD is now 5 and weighs 40 lbs. They are both very tall for their ages, but they are so active that they are so slim.
Ds is 21 lbs and 6 months old. (and I've been worried that he's not growing fast enough, cause he didn't double birth weight
)
I have found myself using the Mei Tei more lately, rather than the ring sling cause it's easier on my back. Sometimes I even let him sit up in the buggy in the store if he's in a good mood.
But, I've never been afraid that he would "break". I feel so intimidated holding friends' little teeny babies. LOL
I have a big babe... he is 22 pound and just over 3 months...
Really there isn't much change,,, I don't use the bucket seat as a containment device so the switch from that to a convertible wasn't any different...
Though he did outgrow the stretchy wrap I have I still have my favourite woven wrap.. with that baby wearing is easy and not stressful at all on my back (I have a bad bad and can't hold him for long without the wrap)
the only challenge that I find is clothing... he is already in the 18 month stuff but everything is too long... he is also in the biggest Bummis covers already but we EC so hopefully he won't be diapers for too long...
My daughter is somewhere around 20+ pounds at exactly 6 months.
We ordered a convertible since her bucket has a limit of 22 pounds. I am not worried that she'll stay "overweight" ( she's falling out of the weight charts
) all her life, my older daughter was a heavy toddler and now at then she's at 23 percent for weight and 50 for height. It all evens out
My biggest downer is that I have to upsize most clothing and I want babyclothes like one pieces and such but the majority in size 12-18 months is made for toddlers, not babies.
I mostly babywear in my woven wrap, on my back mostly or the FWCC when we're outside.
My DS was 9.5 lbs at birth, 22 lbs at 6 mo, and I'm not sure now (he's 9 mo old). At 6 mo he was 28" long, so at that point we got convertible car seats that go up to 65lbs. - the "nice" one (one of the Britax seats) is in my car, and a cheaper one (Cosco) is in my husband's car.
As far as the carriers, I love my sling (over the shoulder baby holder), and I have an ergo carrier - GREAT for heavy babies, but I wish I could have him front facing out in it. Don't bother with the Baby Bjorn - I could only carry DS in it until he was 15 lbs (which was around 3 - 3.5 mo old).
Yeah, never doubted my milk supply - that's been really nice actually. And, interestingly, it's only been since DS was 8.5 mo old that he seemed HUNGRY for solids. We tried giving him some at around 6.5 months, and he wasn't interested.
I wish they made more cute boy clothes in larger sizes... maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but sometimes it seems all of the cute one piece with feet (and not pjs) go up to 9 months, and DS is a minimum 12 months size.
Another plus - GREAT arm muscles!
Seriously, DS is my first baby, so I don't know what it would be like with a smaller baby... I think you adjust to the little person you have.
We skipped the bucket altogether this time, which is good, because the Little One is almost 20 lbs at six months. He was just a little peanut in the convertible at first, but quickly grew into it!
I really like my BabyHawk carrier for him. It is very comfy to accommodate the chunky, especially since a six month old doesn't have quite the same command of this body that a one year old does (which is how old my daughter was at 20 lbs)
My dd will be 4 months next week and is a little over 15 lbs now. She is almost out of her 6 month clothes already - they did not last long!! Our car seat goes up to 28 lbs though so I am happy about that!
My DS is about 23 lbs. at 4 months. We, too, skipped the bucket seat this time in lieu of a Britax, and we're VERY happy we made that decision! We're having issues with diapers, as he's in the largest size right now and they're tight (we use disposables, but are segueing to CD shortly) - I had to buy a pack of 2T-3T training pants
: when I was at Whole Foods yesterday, since I don't know what else to do in the meantime. We've pretty much just kept him in one-piece sleepers since he was born and haven't been having too much of a problem finding ones that fit him - he's pretty long, so he totally fills out the feet of 12-month ones. I have to say that I'm exhausted and sore from toting him around all day - he took several hours of naps in my arms today, but would wake up if I stopped or tried to transition to the rocking chair, so I had to pace the whole time...he's just starting to fuss less being held in the sling, but I don't think he's going to sleep in it, unfortunately. Sometimes I worry I'm going to drop him because he's just getting SO big and heavy
: I've heard a mei-tai might be the best bet for back support. I love not worrying about him gaining enough, though, since most of the people I know IRL seem to have the opposite problem and start supplementing.
Oh yeah this little guy is big! He hit 20 pounds at 3 months and now at 4 months he is 20.1 (thank goodness). I have a bad back and try to carry him in my Maya wrap. The Mei Thai is not bad but made my shoulders sore after a few hours. I just bought the Ergo and cannot wait until he is less wobbly so that I can wear him on my back. It is pretty comfortable with the front carry.
I am super frustrated with the bursting out of clothes. He wears a size 12.
He also seems too big for his Bumbo chair- I tried to take him out of it and it stuck to his bottom- so funny!
He is so darn cute though!
The car seat should not be an issue unless he gets over the rear-facing weight limit before he's a year old. All of the new convertible seats have a rear-facing limit of at least 30 pounds (some go to 33 pounds, some go to 35 pounds). Assuming that he starts crawling before too long, his weight gain will slow down dramatically. My ds was 19 lbs. at 6 months, and 20 pounds at 12 months. The difference in his body type was amazing!
My current babe is certainly chunky, but he already seems to be slowing down even though he's not crawling yet. He weighs 18-something at 4 months. He is shorter and heavier than my other babies were at this age, so he's quite a bit wider as well. He needs 12 month clothes for width, but fits in 3-6 length-wise. I find I dress him mostly in leggings (which it doesn't matter how long they are) and 6-12 month size lap-shoulder t-shirts. He fits in one-piece suits in the 3-6 month size as long as they are cut wide and don't have buttons down the front.
Much easier to have a really big baby than a baby who gains weight slowly and causes lots of worry!
DS hit 30 pounds at about 6 months. I'm not sure it was really tough for me, I got stronger as he got bigger
DD is LITTLE!! I am loving having this bitty thing on me all the time! She looks sort of chubby but I think I'm comparing her to DS because she is somewhere around the %75
My DS was 34lbs at a year. My DD is downright petite, only 25lbs at 9mos.
I have found that a Mei Tai or wrap are the most comfortable for DD. DS hated any sort of carrier, and is still big on the stroller. Go figure.
Car seats shouldn't be an issue. Well, they may be. Make sure she is aware of the RF limit on her seat, she may want to invest the $40 in a Cosco Scenera to keep him RF until 35lbs.
My son was 20lbs at 6 months too. I totally get where the pp said people expect more. I get SO many "is he walking yet" and then concerned looks when I tell them he's not even crawling. I always tell them its hard work to move around that big CD bottom and giant head
Everyone knows giant heads hold bigger brains, of course

My ds was 20.4lbs at his 6month check up an was 28" tall... I got and still get similar questions... he is 9 months old now. he wears 18-24mo clothing, and I have to admit he looks older than a year old. He is taller than my 18 month old neice and weighs the same amt as she does.
The biggest drawback we found was that everyone else thought that ds#1 was much older than he was so they assumed he was "slow"
. It cracked me up, because he was walking at 9 months and running at 10 months but by that time he looked like he was well over a year old. Another drawback with #1 was that he outgrew his bucket seat by 4 months and we had to shell out more $$$ for a new seat far earlier than we thought we would.
This time around I bought the new Graco that goes up to 30#. I know I'll get a few tomatoes, but I really like the ease and convenience of a bucket seat that I can quickly pop into our Baby Trend stroller frame when we go out and about. Both my boys seem very content and it saves my back for when I really do have to carry them about. Plus, even after we get him a new Britax we can still use it as our second car carseat for quite some time.
Like many of the PPs, we found that many CDs were far too bulky on a big baby. FBs worked best for us without adding too much bulk. A friend of ours has a 27# 7 month old and his prefolds and covers make him look huge and make him very bulky to hold--but he's still darn cute!
I really like having big kids. They started out on the big side of average (8.14 and 9.1) and grew quickly. It was nice not having to stress over the "failure to thrive" and feeding issues that I saw many of my friends dealing with.
Oh yeah, one drawback was having the nurse practitioner tell me to cut back on the on-demand feedings because ds#2 had gained a lot of weight---at his 2 week visit!!! Have you ever heard of something so silly as being told you are over breastfeeding a 2 week old?
: That's the last time I'll let the pede office book us an appointment with her...
mine was (ok, still is) a big boy. i never gave it a second thought until i came down with a major sciatica problem when he was about 8 months old. my chiro said it was probably from carrying him on the same hip all the time (basically my right hip got pushed down, making my left leg seem shorter than the other. i went through a spell where i couldn't walk to the toilet for a few days, and had to borrow a wheelchair to get to the drs office for some pain meds) ~ so my advice for parents of big babies is to vary the position in which you carry/wear your not-so-little one and watch your posture.
other than that, just enjoy having a big healthy bundle!
Charlie started out at 10lbs 11oz. He will be three at the end of April and we have just purchased our fourth car seat! UGH!
Depending on the maker, he wears anywhere from a 3T to a 5T and is in size 11 to 12 shoes.
He also started walking at 9 months and at first glance people always think he is older than he is.
We just retired our Britax Boulevard seat for a ChildGuard (I think that what's it called). It is very expensive, double ugh, but we figure we should be able to keep this one around for a while.
I have an almost 19 month old that is in 2T-4T clothes with big feet too. My only problems have been carrying he and his brother and people getting upset because he won't talk to them.
My three week old is starting to outgrow his 3 month clothes so we are in for it again.
My DD was almost 19lbs 4 days shy of 5 months. She was 3 weeks early, and just 7lbs and 20inches at birth, so I fully expect her to have tripled her birth weight at 6 months
She LOVES her mama's milk. She fits in medium FB diapers just fine (on 2nd smallest leg snaps and smallest waist snaps), and wears 9-12 months clothes. She was 27 inches at her 4 month appointment, and I know she's grown since so she's long too.
