DS is 5 months old and I am thinking about starting solids in the next month or so because he is SO interested in food. Reaches when I am eating, watches us intently while we eat. He also has more than doubled birth weigh and seems to have lost his tounge thrust.

When did you all start solids?
Have any of you heard of holding off cereals and grains until 12m or older?
Any good resources for starting solids... I am reading Super Baby Food right noww
THanks

Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair is an excellent book.

I was lazy - with my first child I bought a baby food grinder and steamed things and then made baby food. By the time my third child, I just let him eat things off my plate when he grabbed for them. (like the veggies or soft fruits) I think avocado is a great first food mashed up. We never really did baby cereal. I think I started whole fat organic yogurt at 9 or 10 months, cheese shortly afterwards. Didn't do cow's milk until a year, peanut butter and honey until after 2 years.

This is a good site that questions feeding grains/cereals first.

My dd is 7 months and we're just barely starting solid foods. A bunch of readiness signs appeared within the last two weeks: she started sitting up, got two teeth, and really started watching us eat, grabbing for our food, etc.
She's gummed banana, and doesn't seem interested in eating avocado or yams (I tried to give her a small amount on my finger and she turned her head away and pursed her lips). I think the most important thing is to pay attention to your dc and follow their lead.

Happily parenting our snuggly wild child since 2007 and her little brother since 2011!

I always check here for food for my DS (5 months). We also introduced the Avocado first. He liked it for about one day then he started playing with it. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/

We held off on grains until 10-14 months, with wheat being last. They lack the digestive enzymes for grains.
