Jacob is 6 1/2 weeks old and is still not smiling socially. He will make eye contact and track with effort but still seems to prefer to gaze off to the left or the right. I am a little worried because I don't remember if my other two children did this. Is he the only one? Or anyone else been through the same worry? Please help.......

my first babe didn't smile socially till she was 8w old or so, if i remember right. my other babies did at 4w and 2w. my first was super laid back and hit many milestones 'late' but is a very healthy on track 5.5 year old now.

Our Jacob was the same way, it must be a name thing

Don't sweat it, I'm sure he'll be smiling soon!

I wouldn't worry. I belong to an online "playroom" and I am sure I remember some of the babies not smiling until 8 weeks.

Me: Shannon (33) mom to DD Everly born May 9, 2007 and Maisie born May 26

I don't remember exactly how old ds was, but I'm sure it was at least 8 weeks or so, maybe later. Now he is the smiliest, most sociable & flirtatious little guy around. Everyone remarks about what a happy smiley baby he is. Don't sweat it!

My youngest didn't really make eye contact well until he was over 2 months old. He started smiling a lot more at that time, too. I'd give him another couple of weeks before you get worried.

No worries! I do, however, suggest playing with his face. I thought that mine wasn't smiling yet, but then I found out that dh could get one out of him by vibrating his mouth and nose with a finger and making silly noises.

Thank you all SO much for your replies. DH and I have been so worried. All the books say that babies smile and "love to gaze into their mother's eyes" Well...Jacob still prefers to look at the wall (maybe we are just goofy to look ator the wall is more entertaining?). However, I did notice today he looked at me a little more and was definately tracking me with his eyes a few times. I am just so nervous about it.
