The title basically says it all. He's got a cough and is sneezing .. I know it's a cold because we all got it at the same time from visiting my family. Is there anything I need to know about taking care of a baby with a cold? He's exclusively BF and I'm giving him unrestricted access to the boob, as well as lots of rest .. I heard the flu can be serious in a baby, are colds the same?
I'm sorry, my dd2 got a cold right around the same age, I know it's stressful. As long as he's doing okay you don't need to do much. I used a bulb syringe and saline to get out the snot when I could, since they can't rid themselves of it very well. You can use echinacea tincture on an infant. Also a vaporizer at night or some nice steamy showers. I actually took her to the DR because the coughing made me nervous in a baby so young. They listened to her lungs and said it was just a cold, and that I should bring her back if the coughing or congestion lasted longer than 2 weeks. I thought bf babies didn't get sick very much, and my dd1 didn't, but this one must not have a great immune system. She is sick again right now! All I can do is throw my hands up and assume it would be worse if she wasn't bf...
: , but it seems to be a little milder this go around. Both times I have done unrestricted breastfeeding (which you already are doing
), clear out the nose with a bulb syringe (as pp suggested) and put a few drops of breastmilk in his nose several times per day (I had this cold right before him and tried it on myself -- it worked WONDERS!!).
Having a sick baby is no fun....just monitor him and keep doing what you are doing -- trust your instincts and if he gets worse, maybe stop in the Dr's office.
